A Different World

French President Nicholas Sarkozy got divorced early in his term, is dating a supermodel and his son's writing songs for radical French rappers. Not only does American politics seem remarkably focused on relatively unimportant personal trivia, but our politicians don't even have interesting trivia.

Yes, but I think we have the advantage in the number of nearly apocalyptic features of our public sphere.

When your country has health care, a 35-hour work week, and 4 weeks paid vacation voters are more forgiving of personal quirks like using your office as a shag magnet.

Not to mention that sex is to the French as violence is to the U.S. That is, on TV, in the theatres, etc.

To joejoejoe : 5 weeks paid vacation it is. As for our 35-hour work week, Sarkozy just admitted that his next grand idea is to suppress it, never explaining how many hours a week we ought to work then.
And do you know that his former wife is supposed to marry her publicist, in February too ?

Not just any supermodel. A supermodel who's dated Donald Trump and whose affair with Mick Jagger was responsible for the break-up of his marriage.

Now THAT'S interesting personal details.

Right. I thought that Clinton boning an ugly girl was distasteful and embarrassing but not really important. If she'd been really hot, I might have cared and in a more positive way.

Oh fuck off, I was 17.

Bruni is also a talented singer-sonwriter. Seriously, I've heard several songs and she's good.

And, it must be said, a supermodel whose most recent album was a really good listen.

Is Sarkozy's son writing songs for radical leftist rappers? If so, don't tell Sean Hannity or else his head will explode.

Or, you know, what SteveH said.

On the other hand, maybe American reporters just aren't digging for genuinely interesting stuff about American pols. Want to know how basketball changed Barack Obama's life? Read all about it... in Le Monde.

The funny thing about these French female singers is that they don't really have to be able to sing at all: as long as they have a pleasant voice the beauty of the French language simply suffices to make it sound totally awesome, cf. also Vanessa Paradis, Alizee and, lol, Jane Birkin. Similar things could be said about male singers like Serge Gainsbourg and the style of French chanson he epitomizes.

but our politicians don't even have interesting trivia.

A slew of love children and a lesbian affair with a top staffer?

Sure ours do.

You're just reading the wrong papers.

You're just reading the wrong papers.

As long as we're talking about those papers, let's not forget Hillary's space alien baby adoption. Now that was the scoop of the century!

The real lesson of the Sarkozy/Bruni relationship: if he's got enough money and power, even a stubby little runt can snag himself an ultra-hott woman.

Novakant,

I wouldn't say it's necessarily the beauty of the French language that made Jane Birkin a hit. Adding some simulated orgasm sounds to the end of a song will tend to make your songs sell better- expecially in 1967.

Personally, the French language is a bit too guttural and Germanic sounding for my ears, but that's just me.

Umm... Giuliani?

I know "Shag-gate" (or whatever we were supposed to call it) has apparently been shoved down the memory hole, but still...

At least I got to enjoy that hilarious "campaign ad" for Giuliani in re: "mistresses on the taxpayer dollar" that Stranahan had on YouTube.

Too bad our media has such blinders when it comes to Republicans.

De gustibus, I guess, but I've just spent a week in Paris and had a hard time not instantly falling in love with any random girl nattering away on the metro, just because they all sounded so cute ;).

Like I said in another thread, give me Segolene Royal and her bikini coverage over the Hillary "Crying Game" crap.

Extra credit to anyone who can link me to some information on the upcoming election mentioned in the times article. Points towards tomorrow's quiz for information on the candidates and issues.

Bonne chance
