Gibbs Out

08 Jan 2008 09:58 am

With all of DC's biggest political addicts all up in New Hampshire, the only thing anyone in town really cares about is Joe Gibbs resigning as head coach of the Redskins. Seems to me like it's for the best.

I'm guessing Cowher's one of Snyder's top choices for a replacement.

I'm guessing Cowher's one of Snyder's top choices for a replacement.

Or Chuck Norris, who seems much more like a Snyder "dream" candidate.

Any Congressman or Senator who is a Redskins fan and is not from Maryland or Virginia probably needs to be voted out of office. They have been in DC too long.

Bring back Schottenheimer!

Wow. This is the first I heard of this. right is right, Schottenheimer got a raw deal the first time he was here, not that I would work for Snyder if I were him.

Why "for the best"? He got them to the playoffs even after the Taylor shooting. Seems like he was doing a good job (Buffalo blunder notwithstanding).

I hate the skins so much that I root for Joe Gibbs drivers to loose in NASCAR races. May they loose every game in the post Gibbs era.

what would be for the best for the redskins would be for snyder to sell the team: someday i'll have to do an analysis of how often idiot owners win it all (my guess? rarely).

asshole owners, of course, are a different story, but once you add in the idiot factor....

What are the odds that Gregg Williams gets promoted from DC? Sure he sucked with the Bills, but maybe he's grown.

The guy with 5 whole playoff wins in over 20 years isn't the guy. Snyder is smart enough to want, and pay, Cowher. I'm curious whether Cowher would want to come to DC.

Never, ever say a coaching change is "for the best" until it's complete. If they let Gregg Williams (a failed head coach and the polar opposite of Gibbs in the likability/leadership department) take over, is that "for the best?"

Obviously they've got their eyes on Cowher here. I don't really see who else makes sense. But if he turns out not to be gettable, I'm not looking forward to the Gregg Williams era.

I'm curious whether Cowher would want to come to DC.

It's reasonably close to the Carolinas where his family is now, and I'm sure they'll offer him a dump truck of money. They've got as good a shot as anyone at him.

Given that the only reason Gibbs' teams have been even marginally competitive is because of Gregg Williams' defenses, while Gibbs' offenses have stunk it up (in fact not performing any better than the much maligned Spurrier's offenses), it would seem likely that Williams will get the job.

Plus, while it's not a big deal, he gets a million dollars as a buyout if they don't appoint him the next head coach.

Enjoying another moment of schadenfreude over the Racist Nicknames...

They'd be amazingly fortunate if Cowher was willing to work for them. Regardless of who's the next coach, I'm hoping for a scenario in which the team continues to stink for the next however-many decades, until people start talking about a Curse (some variant of the Curse of Tecumseh?) and they try changing their ridiculous name.

They were getting killed on in-game adjustments until Saunders took over. I think Gibbs recognized that he was, at best, second best coach on the staff. At his age, why stick around for that?

We want Gregg Williams.

When I first saw this headline, the comment count on the post above was 21. Coincidence? I think not.

Gibbs has some good coaching qualities, but he's not getting any younger and the game has changed:

a) Obvious small rule changes while he was away.
b) This year the balance between offence and defence changed and I don't think he ever assimilated it.
c) The real key to success is no longer game or training coaching, it's in cap management and off-season personnel acquisition, which were never the core of Gibbs skill. Gibbs can take a team and get it to overperform, but there are others who can do that too. What the team needs is someone who can sneak more talent in under the cap, attract different free agents and generally raise the skill level of the team so that when they overperform they are better than 9-7.

Gregg Williams? Really? He seems like another Peter Principle-type coach to me.

I say either get Cowher (a proven winner, even with horrible QB's!) or give a fresh face a try. Williams is uninspiring as a head coach.

I TOLD you the Seahawks were gonna win! (Though admittedly they had us scared witless in Seattle until the final six minutes.)

Definitely not for the best in the short term. Everyone seems to say that both Saunders and Williams have egos too large to stay if the other becomes head coach. That means either the offense or the defense will have to start over with an entirely new system next year. In the long term it depends on who they hire to coach and who they sign to play, as it always has, and gee, Dan Snyder seems to be running that show still.

I understand Gibbs Era II didn't live up to Gibbs Era I, but it was still markedly better than the Gibbs Interregnum.

As an Eagles fan, I support any of the following for 'skins head coaching: Gregg Williams, Al Saunders, Cam Cameron, Andy Reid.

I hope Cowher isn't swayed by Danny boy's millions. I have a soft spot for the lantern-jawed coach out of central casting, and like cheflovesbeer, I hate the Redskins.

If it's Williams, I predict that won't last longer than two seasons. He's too abrasive.

Hey, if you can resurrect Gibbs, then why not Richie Pettibone? I'd love to see him and his belly roaming the the Washington sideline again.

Re howard

Mr. howard hits the nail squarely on the head. The problem with the Deadskins is not Joe Gibbs, Marty Shottenheimer, Norv Turner, or even Steve Spurrier. The problem is the fucking asshole who owns the team, Mr. Daniel the schmuck Snyder. His failure to hire a competent general manager puts any coach he hires behind the 8 ball before he even shows up in training camp. As a former sports talk show host in this area once said, the competence of any organization starts at the top. The competence of Mr. Snyder as a football owner is decidedly 5th rate of the order of Cardinals owner Bill Bidwell.
