I Feel It All

New Feist video:

Every now and again I miss the Let It Die days when you didn't see Feist everywhere, but then I hear one of the songs and, well, they're very good.

Matt, I made the same mistake when I first became aware of Feist: Feist isn't a "they", it's a she. Leslie Feist is a solo artist, not a group.

I believe Feist is also in a musicians' collective known as Broken Social Scene (out of Toronto) wherein members drift in & out, form satellite bands, appear on each other's albums, etc.

raff, I'm pretty sure Matt knows that Feist is singular. That final clause refers to the songs.

You could be right, Tom, but the phrasing threw me: "...I hear one of the songs...". Perhaps "...one of her songs and, well, they're very good." would have been clearer.

Or perhaps I've had a very long week.

Oh, dear young Matthew, you must venture West or South of the Potomac one of these days, where they think Feist was one of Hitler's top generals or something - yes, the "1,2,3,4" Apple commercial is/was ubiquitous, but otherwise she receives no radio/video play unless its some scratchy college station.

Great video, like the ones for "1234" and "My Moon My Man" (There's something arresting about one-take no-edit videos -- The one for Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How It Feels" had the same quality). Feist is, as usual, adorable -- I mean, come on, air piano! How cool is that?

Sorry for the double post.

This is the problem when an indie artist sticks around long enough to be considered an ideal hipster marketing soundtrack by a twentysomething ad exec.

Matt, you're such a too-cool, too-smart tool. This kind of post has prompted me to unsubscribe from your feed a couple of times before. I keep coming back for your political and social commentary.

guess i will jump off the bridge next

What happened to the emotion that was sucked out of all those Feist songs? Did it evaporate into the ozone layer? Those who prefer some non-novocained music might appreciate this or these:

This is a pretty good song. Now. Really. But twenty years from now, when Feist/Stars/Rilo Kiley/Regina Spektor nostalgia is all the rage, you will smile at this song and at the twenty-somethings listening to it, and you will wonder to yourself why you thought it was so great. When that day comes just remember, this is not a bad thing.

I just can't get into Feist. On both albums, there are 3-4 interesting songs. The rest is just kind of boring. Am I the only one out there who thinks she's overrated?

Even though the video is only a few minutes long, it probably took weeks to make. Most people don't understand all the precautions they need to take, and I conduct a "thought experiment" regarding those precautions here. I invite professional engineers to weigh in with their own thoughts.

Her songs are definitely catchy, and she's soooo perky that it's hard not to like her. But for a long-term musical relationship, give me Hole. I know that if I buy her albums, I'll burn out on them quickly...

Delovely. I thought she was singing Who will be the one to break my heart, but it turns out she says Ooh I'll be the one to break my heart. In the end it amounts to the same thing though.

Engh. I hate these posts where someone bemoans the success of a great singer like Feist. Would you rather she sold no records? Or maybe just sold records to ersatz scensters like you?
