John McCain, Grand Strategist

31 Jan 2008 02:21 pm

I've written a bit about John McCain apparent ignorance of economic policy, but it's also worth noting the vacuity of his thoughts on national security. Check out this farce flagged by Kevin Drum and Steve Benen:

John McCain says in almost every stump speech that he knows how to capture Osama bin Laden and that he'd follow the al Qaeda leader to the "Gates of Hell."

So Washington Wire was wondering, what does McCain know that President Bush and the Pentagon don't about how to sweep up America's most elusive enemy.

"One thing I will not do is telegraph my punches. Osama bin Laden will be the last to know," he said today while riding on the back of his bus between Florida events. In other words: he's not telling. Why not share his strategy with the current occupant of the White House? "Because I have my own ideas and it would require implementation of certain policies and procedures that only as the president of the United States can be taken."

On the small issue of fighting al-Qaeda, in short, he has no ideas whatsoever. Instead, he has a silly slogan about the gates of hell. Macho posturing? Check. Ideas about keeping the country safer? Not so much. But he's virtuous so who cares, right? Plus, though McCain may not know much about fighting al-Qaeda he really loves war which passes for statesmanship these days, I suppose.

I caught a little of the debate last night, and McCain was terrible. He has this tendency to smile after he finishes answering a question. Sort of unnerving when it so often follows his catchall "radical Islamic extremists".

Why do I mention this? Because I'm not sure there's a heck of a lot behind the image of McCain in the populace. The concern here is that it doesn't matter what the guy says.

So, do we get to choose between

Barack Obama and
Go Bomb Iraq-a?

"Secret Plan to End the War," big guy. It's not like it hasn't worked before.

McCain is also a master political strategist.
Asian-Americans have a fair amount of wealth And John McCain knows how to raise big money from this group:

""I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

I remember what Dave Barry remarked about Nixon's secret plan to end the war, that it was so secret even he didn't know what it was.

The irony wrapped in sincerity wrapped in irony. An enigma!

So, Bush doesn't care where ObL is, and McCain can wait?

Nice.
.

Yea, it is more difficult every day to imagine a general election where McCain could give even Hillary a run for her money. He seems oddly on a downward spiral at a time when he should be lightening up for general election mode.

No matter what we think of it, McCain's line that Democrats have raised a white flag of surrender to the Islamic extremists will resonate with more than 50% of the people.

I am fairly new to frequenting this blog. So far I have to say that Don is my favorite commenter.

First he brought us the gem: Hillary Clinton as a snarling fishwife earlier and now this McCain "gook" stuff. Top notch Don, keep up the good work.

I have a feeling that the McCain fans will soon appear to tell us that Romney is also a lunatic who also claims to have secret plans and that those secret plans may or may not involve mormonism and/or missionary work (gasp!).

(Note: I think Romney is also a putz but that is not the point)

Um, if you knew how to catch OBL, wouldn't you be risking a lot of lives if you didn't tell someone?

I think he should be taken to Guantanamo and waterboarded until he tells us where OBL is hiding.

he'd follow the al Qaeda leader to the "Gates of Hell."

So he'd bring him back from hell? Don't we want him in hell?

McCain's line that Democrats have raised a white flag of surrender to the Islamic extremists will resonate with more than 50% of the people.

50% of Americans don't understand what "now" means?

Republicans are 26% of the population, and (if Florida is any indicator), Iraq isn't the biggest thing on their minds.

Re Don Williams

1. How come Mr. Williams isn't blaming Senator McCains' bigoted language on Hiam Saban?

2. The article makes it clear that Senator McCain is referring specifically to the individuals who tortured him which is a very small group which can be counted on the fingers of the two hands. That to some extent mitigates the use of the racial slur, although not entirely.

3. It should be noted that Senator McCain provided cover for President Clinton when he opened diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

The article makes it clear that Senator McCain is referring specifically to the individuals who tortured him

Geez, what a whiner he is. Whatever happened to letting bygones be bygones?

I for one am glad he is keeping it top secret. How does McCain know that Cheney and Bush aren't secretly collaborating with OBL?

However, I imagine the plan is as simple as it is ingenious. You simply leave a fake five dollar bill on the sidewalk in some town in Peshawar. Obama, spotting it, leans over to pick it up and BAM - you put the cuffs on him right there!

Of course, McCain is way too smart to have one plan. He's also planted ads for x ray specs which allow you can see under the clothes of women (hot hot hot!) in the back of various magazines, and his people will carefully check through the mail coming in for those specs. Surely ObL, lost there in his wee little peehole on the Afghan border, is dying for amusement. Hence, he'll of course respond to the add, and you just trace him using the return address on the envelope.

Supposedly retired blogger Steven Denbeste, is going to head this no holds barred effort to capture ObL. Success is assured!

I like where your heading there Roger. What about this scenario?

ObL: "Allahu Akbar! I won Superbowl tickets, what luck! Now I just need to go down to the local courthouse to pick them up!"

Re SLC's comment "The article makes it clear that Senator McCain is referring specifically to the individuals who tortured him which is a very small group which can be counted on the fingers of the two hands. That to some extent mitigates the use of the racial slur ["I hate the gooks"], although not entirely."

Wait until he gets his hands on the trigger to those 500 Minuteman missiles in Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Although maybe not. McCain is so amiable and mild-mannered, after all:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/05192007/news/nationalnews/raising_mccain_nationalnews_charles_hurt.htm

Although I can see why you wouldn't want to joke with McCain about "parachuting into" a Senate caucus.

His military knowledge, though he's lucky and adventurey,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century,
He is the very model of a modern major media crush . . .

Should a candidate of McCain's mature age really be reminding voters that he is not long for this world (i.e., going to travel to the Gates of Hell)?

What if, once there, Charon refuses to let him return?

McCain For President!!
Do you want to see how clear his message is?
Do you want to learn how much of a straight talk is he?
Do you want to learn how much Honesty this man has to share with everyone?

McCain For PRESIDENT!!!

"The Gates of Hell"

Isn't that an exit off the Turnpike where the StraightTalk Express blew out a tire and rolled off the shoulder into a ditch?

This sounds like little more than McCain trying to sound like Churchill ("if Hitler invaded Hell, I would ally myself with the Devil" or whatever he said) crossed with Nixon-style retardation. It would be nice if the press mentioned that a big reason they love him so much is that the Straight Talk Express provided the best free booze to reporters in 2000.

Shorter John McCain-- Someday we'll win the Vietnam War.

Personally, I'd rather have John Constantine with me in going to the "Gates of Hell", as he knows how to get back. McCain clearly doesn't.

If McCain has a secret plan to get bin Laden, well, basically it better be mine, or he's not going to succeed.

I suspect his would cost a lot more than mine - even if I am asking for a billion up front (and expect to make a nine hundred million dollar profit.)

My offer is still open, McCain! Want to win the election? Get me my billion in advance and in ninety days I give you OBL to parade! (Assuming OBL is still alive - Benazir Bhutto thought Mullah Omar killed him in 2003...That was one of the reasons SHE got killed.)

I dunno. The whole "I have a Secret Plan" thing has quite a venerable history in electoral politics. Worked for Nixon. The schtick, I mean, not the Plan. There wasn't one.

Um, if you knew how to catch OBL, wouldn't you be risking a lot of lives if you didn't tell someone?

Yeah, that's quite an election pitch. In other words, 'You better vote for me or else the US government will never know my secret plan to capture Osama Bin Laden' and the blood will be on your hands, you rubes.'

Hmmm, I believe there's a word for that, what could it be? Oh yes....

McCain seems to have no appreciation whatsoever what a source of antagonism a long-term American presence in Iraq is going to be. The one million dead Iraqis, the 4-5 million internally displaced, and the resentment their plight triggers among Muslims seem hardly to register with him. He could never grasp, for example, that the American military presence in Saudi Arabia was a big motivator for Al Qaeda attacks.

For a man with such vaunted "foreign policy experience", he is in fact tone deaf and dumb.

The comments are so incredibly liberal (not that I mind), but there are others that are just....wow O_o

Yeah, I'd hate my captors too if I got imprisoned and tortured for five years...
