Ouch!
I am disappointed that Portal references ("editor promised cake") have not invaded more of the blogosphere. Kudos to Goldberg-bashers for bringing it up.
Link thru Editor Promised Cake to Heads in the Sand AND Doug Giles...curiouser and curiouser...THAT is some quick draw artistry
The cake is a lie, Nick. But I don't think that's necessarily a Portal reference.... People have used "so and so promised cake" as a joking motivation for going somewhere for years. Plus, Goldberg is, uh, large.
If Jonah Goldberg, Christopher Buckley and John Podhoretz went out for a round of golf who would be their fourth?
If Jonah Goldberg, Christopher Buckley and John Podhoretz went out for a round of golf who would be their fourth? Hot dog cart?
If Jonah Goldberg, Christopher Buckley and John Podhoretz went out for a round of golf who would be their fourth? George W. Bush?
wiping the tears from my eyes after clicking the link and laughing. fantastic!
Conservative Thought? Military Music? Oh, wait. I get it. Lucianne's spawn is laying the groundwork for der dolchstosslegende. Check.
My goodness. What a compelling argument! Someone I disagree with writes a book I'm probably going to disagree with, so I should a) read it and tear apart any weak arguments it has put forth b) post lists of people calling the author a poopy-head! (b) is much simpler, I'll grant you that.
I liked, "banged out by howler monkeys" and "written while high on cheeto dust."
Tom- You also forgot about the part where the book is inane and devoid of serious scholarship.
Thanks I got a good laugh out of that.
"Liberals" are such cute little children, aren't they? Meanwhile, one definition of "doughy" is "of or like dough, esp. in being soft and heavy or pallid and flabby". I rush to add that "doughy pantload" isn't racist or crypto-racist, because it's a "liberal" expression used against an Oppressor and thus not racist for some reason or other.
The "If Michelle Malkin is over your head" tag needs more people!
Good point, wacko and Tom-- the fact that there are silly tags at Amazon certainly indicates that there is no rational counterpoint to Goldberg's serious, careful argument. I'd add that it also proves that liberals are trying to silence conservatives. First, they came for the Amazon tags. And I said nothing, because my mom hadn't gotten me a book contract...
I am disappointed that Portal references ("editor promised cake") have not invaded more of the blogosphere. Kudos to Goldberg-bashers for bringing it up. "In the the event that the weighted companion cube does write a book, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice." (What am I saying? People love the weighted companion cube.)
This post is really mean and a heck of a turn-off for casual readers. I know little about Goldberg's forthcoming book, but it's pretty disappointing to come to a political blog hosted by one of the country's flagship publications and find this crap. If it's really that bad, why mention it at all?
(b) is much simpler, I'll grant you that. And (a) has already been ably handled by the folks at Sadly, No!
Will- The derision is warranted.
i can has job mom Apparently the left wing doesn't speak English.
"This post is really mean and a heck of a turn-off for casual readers. If it's really that bad, why mention it at all? Posted by Will | January 9, 2008 12:47 PM" The guy wrote a book on fascism yet failed to define what fascism even is. That's like if I wrote a book on communism and decided that because Stalin was ruthless, Bill Gates is a communist. Besides, one of the great things about blogs is that not everyone has to pretend that, say, Bill Kristol is a rational human being deserving of anything but a kick in the balls. Blogs are where smart people can publicly kick Kristol in his crystal sack.
"i can has job mom Apparently the left wing doesn't speak English. Posted by Al | January 9, 2008 1:17 PM" Apparently Al can't get a punchline.
Love the incredibly lame attempts to stand up for Jonah! Thanks for the laughs Al, Will, TLB, and Tom!
"Gastroanomalies: Questionable Culinary Creations from the Golden Age of American Cookery" is by conservative wit, James Lileks. If The Pantload is a conservative and you laugh at his efforts, it makes sense to turnaround and buy a work from a conservative who is, and intends to be, funny.
Hey if you want serious rebuttal, check out: http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=jonah_goldbergs_bizarro_history Then again, when Goldberg is writing a book based on "The term Fascism is overused and hard to define, so let me use it to define liberalism". Demanding we take that seriously is like demanding we take David Icke's "Jews are lizard men" theories seriously.
I rush to add that "doughy pantload" isn't racist or crypto-racist, because it's a "liberal" expression used against an Oppressor and thus not racist for some reason or other. You know, if someone dug out that tortured reading in one of my freshman comp classes, I think I'd advise that they drop out.
Apparently the left wing doesn't speak English. You leave Maryscott O'Connor alone!!!!
I enjoy Yglesias's work and I understand that reading this blog is supposed to be a more casual affair than wading through the latest issue of Foreign Policy. There are also plenty of public figures worthy of our derision. I just don't get why it has to be so overtly mean. Making fun of the dude for being fat is perhaps the most substance-free way to attack questionable scholarship.
Will- Its not like Jonah's calling people names, claiming that Nazis did not persecute homosexuals, or belittling the holocaust by endorsing a Hitler mustache on a smiley face.
Now "doughy pantload" is not just "mean", but "racist". Conservative victimization knows no end...
Clearly, Kalkin, these people are so racist they can't make gingerbread or chocolate cookies. Sad, really.
"There are also plenty of public figures worthy of our derision. I just don't get why it has to be so overtly mean." A call for kinder, gentler derision.
>Now "doughy pantload" is not just "mean", but "racist". I believe there are diaper-wearers across the whole spectrum of skin pigments.
Personally, I am disappointed not to see a "chickenhawk" tag. Did I miss it on the list? Good catch. Added.
"i can has job mom Apparently the left wing doesn't speak English. Posted by Al | January 9, 2008 1:17 PM Well, no. We prefer to speak in our native language, Islamofascist. That's why we make you press "1" on the phone if you want to speak English. But it's true, we really shouldn't mock Goldberg until we've read the book carefully. We shouldn't prejudge this important work! We should come to it with an open mind, overlooking the tubloads of dreck he's written day after day after day after day after day after day after day since the Intertubes were first hooked up. That would be the truly liberal thing to do. And yes, let's lay off the racist slurs like "pantload."
Ha ha ha ha! Other funnies:
code pink invaded poland makes ann coulter seem sane social security is like treblinka ghost writer quit when i tried to pay him in funyuns cheeto-erotic asphyxiation
Jeebus, I'm at work here. I clicked on the Amazon link to look at the tags and had a fit of laughter. I am typing this from under my desk so nobody else can hear me. ("attend to luciannes bunions" sent me over the edge)
Apparently the left wing doesn't speak English. The only real flaw in Goldberg's book is that he neglected to include a section on "grammar nazis" - unless he did, which would also be central to my point.
What I love is the complete circle jerk that goes on in the Corner when one of their own writes a book. They all give lusty cheers and bravos about a job well done, no matter what dreck is produced. Also, when some right-winger praises the book Jonah is all a flutter, as if he was expected the right wingers to give a book claiming that elementary school teachers from Brown were heir apparents to Heydrich et al. thumbs down. The left is not guilt free from producing intellectually bereft books, but with Regency among others out there willing to publish virtually any insipid piece of garbage that comes along, the right certainly has laid claim to the stupidity trophy.
Jonah has concern trolls! How cute. He accuses everyday liberals of being fascists (who, y'know, murdered millions of people) and the trolls say it's mean to refer to Jonah as doughy. Whatta hoot. (Personally, I like "social security is like treblinka" and "soon to be remaindered".)
As the person who coined the phrase "doughy pantload," I can confirm that the adjective "doughy" was indeed a racist jab, and that pantload was a non-incontinentist jab at Incontinent-Americans. My original idea was to call him "a big fat pantload throwin' up in a sandbox," based on a quote by pathetic cartoon cracker Bill Dauterive.
Because Goldberg's Theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The theory is not a fact.
Personally, I like "social security is like treblinka" and "soon to be remaindered".) Woo hoo! The less witty of the two of those was my contribution! This is the lamest pride moment ever.
Don't forget to rate it!

The number one book viewers of that page ultimately buy, other than the book itself? Gastroanomalies: Questionable Culinary Creations from the Golden Age of American Cookery. No joke.
