Meanwhile, In Florida

26 Jan 2008 07:39 pm

Y'all know I'm not one to say that everything is good news for John McCain. But tonight there is actual very good news for McCain as Florida's super-popular and somewhat moderate governor Charlie Crist is going to endorse him. This comes on the heels of his endorsement from Senator Mel Martinez yesterday.

Actually, this is good news for...Rudy!

Last I heard Charlie Crist on the subject of the candidates he was saying how much he liked all of them (giving the same sort of speech about the various strengths of the candidates -- Giuliani's commitment to X, Mitt's ability to Y, etc. -- that Mitt Romney gave about various religions) and sounding very un-enthused about each one of them and like he was ready to vote for a Democrat come Nov.

Speaking of McCain, though, is it my imagination or is McCain really phoning it in lately. All his speeches lately sound like a hastily thrown together collection of the buzzwords and phrases with which he is associated.

The Freepers hate Crist. They'll see it as a RINO stampede. As a winner-take-all closed primary, a lot will depend on turnout.

Moderate, pro-amnesty republicans endorse McCain? Stop the presses!

Yeah I don't know about these things but I can't imagine any movement conservative liking Crist. Last time I was at my parents' house in Florida, he had an op-ed in the paper arguing that giving ex-felons the right to vote was the right thing to do. I'm not surprised that McCain seems like the bst of the bunch to him.

Yeah, the freeper types in FL hate, hate, hate Crist. It's heartening, actually, that because Crist is really popular among both Dems and Pubs, we know that the state isn't made of truly committed wingnuts, *and* that progressive ideals can get a fair shake from a wide swath of the electorate when not attached to the Democratic Party, which is moribund in FL.

There really is a parallel to Schwarzenegger, except that no one thinks Crist used to go around groping random women (Heil Der Gropinator). We do think he's in the closet, however. In California, Crist would actually be a Democrat, probably considered a "moderate" one.

According to the NY Times, 350,000 Floridians have already cast ballots in the Democratic primary, four times the number in 2004, even though no one is campaigning, no one is running ads, and (theoretically) no delegates get to vote at the national convention. About 400,000 Republicans have already voted (twice more than 2006). In both cases, that's probably about 20% of the votes that will be cast in the election on Tuesday. Will be interesting to see how they affect the totals.

What is a freeper?

A freeper is someone who hangs out at http://www.freerepublic.com
