Barack Obama's new refrain "yes we can" just so happens to be an English translation of the "si se puede" chant one might associate with a crucial union in Nevada.

Will Culinary back off now, though?
Is MY happy that Obama blacked it up this time with the choice of music after his speech? They used "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."
Hillary listened for a week in New Hampshire and found her voice?
Thanks so much for this, New Hampshire.
Thank you for making us suffer through the most insufferable victory speech of the campaign season so far.
Live free or die, indeed.
"Is MY happy that Obama blacked it up this time with the choice of music after his speech? They used "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."
That's been his exit music for a while now.
Is MY happy that Obama blacked it up this time with the choice of music after his speech? They used "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."
And CNN slammed the choice as Obama "getting ahead of himself".
The big questions is why is Richardson still in the race. I mean he's not Kucinich trying to make a living doing presidential runs and he doesn't have any issues to highlight. Does he hate his job that much?
Is culinary really going to just endorse the NH winner? That would seem a bit small . . .
It'd be okay if they endorsed Edwards; he's probably the best candidate for their interests.
And Tom Petty's "American Girl" for Hillary
I feel a little better after watching Barack annihilate Sen. Clinton rhetoric-wise. I dunno, I just may have the biggest ol' man-crush on Obama, but I thought his speech was uncommonly good and hers was rather weak (though I thought that the "I found my voice" line was not bad, and helps cement the narrative that her "emotional" moment was a turning point).
Meanwhile, Hillary has "found her voice." Really? After all these decades, NOW she's found her voice? So she's found her voice, and now I've found my barf bag.
"Si se puede" has a bit more resonance than that. Think "we shall overcome" of the immigrant rights movement...
Si se puede translates to me more like "It can be done!"
Actually there were a few good lines in the HRC speech and I think found her voice was a pretty good line though my own personal speech style would have delivered it differently.
Remember, when you whisper sometimes people strain to hear you.
The big questions is why is Richardson still in the race.
Maybe he's looking for a date? He likes the campaign food?
So Petey, I guess Hillary isn't the Knicks anymore...which brings up the key question, who's the Powder Blues?
I'm a NH native and a student at Dartmouth College and I am disgusted by the results. Looking at the results by town, Clinton won because of strength in NH's two large middle class cities--Manchester and Nashua. Maybe middle class voters will be more favorable to Obama outside of New England (NH is a rarity in that it's rural, exurban counties favor progressive Democrats).
I don't think Obama will win at this point, unless he can appeal to minorities and win the south. The irony is that Obama's message isn't sinking in with lower/middle income voters, but that an Obama presidency would do a whole lot more for this demographic than a Hillary Clinton presidency (Bill Clinton's presidency accomplished little ultimately to benefit unions, improve our commitment to education, or improve the problems with the health care system). Oh well, I guess the middle class will continue to fall back, and political apathy and a weak sense of civic values will continue for years to come.
Hillary's speech was talking to helping individual people and to the individuals getting involved in her campaign.
Obama did inspirational grand goals. That's great for becoming a "rock star," preacher or leader of protest marches.
I found the difference quite striking and surprising; hers seemed much more warm and personal, and he seemed colder.
I am starting to think he might have an interacting with "real" people problem, like I said on this thread, especially in town hall/question and answer situations. Anyone even know if he has any skill at that?
She, on the other hand, while once terrible at that, but has had years of watching a master and has no doubt been working hard on trying to change her manner.
"I found the difference quite striking and surprising; hers seemed much more warm and personal, and he seemed colder."
I'm surprised you find this surprising.
artappraiser - he did spend a few years as a community organizer, and apparently an effective one. I'm no Obama fan, but I don't think he has an "interacting with real people" problem.
"And Tom Petty's 'American Girl' for Hillary."
That's what the female Senator's daughter was playing when Buffalo Bill got her.
Ooo - ooo - oooo...(spooky music)

She's making sure SOME Democrat wins.
Well that's a little creepy.
That was the point.
A little movie cultural reference to beat up on Hillary with.
It'd be okay if they endorsed Edwards; he's probably the best candidate for their interests.
Maybe so. But it's better not to have crossed the future president of the United States. My guess is they'll go with Clinton.
Robert, your input in your first paragraph is interesting, thank you for sharing it.
Petey, I am as susceptible to the "Hillary as cold calculating bitch" stereotype as the next person. In fact, come to think of it, for a New York Senator, that's sort of a feature, not a bug. :-) You know, the whole cracking voice/tears story got me thinking about the raw desire for the ultimate power of all these people. What's wrong with running for president but losing, getting more exposure, and becoming a more powerful Senator from the experience?
Art,
That's why you appraise art for a living.
Not That there's anything wrong with that.
Obama's "theme" is more cold and calculated the Clinton's or Edward's. Obama is reforming the process/ending partisanship. He is not focused on people but process. High concept can not be as warm as little picture.
I'm a longtime Obama fan/ex-volunteer, and Barack used the "Yes We Can" chant back in 04 right after his primary win.
Any union that endorses Obama in the primaries after he labeled them special interests and derided their 527s should get kicked in the shins. I know those endorsements are 50/50 at best between preference and pragmatism but Obama will toss unions under the bus if he gets in a tough spot.
Deval "Huge Goddamn Disappointment" Patrick also used "Yes, We Can!" during the 2006 campaign.
Just a nitpick: the phrase is "Sí se puede". The accent is critical. Without it, it means "if you can".
¡Sí se puede! is a favorite chant of Mexican soccer fans, also.
Sammy Davis Jr's autobiography is called Yes I Can! That's a dog whistle to Sammy Davis Jr. fans such as myself.
And "found my voice" is a woman thing, of course. Can you imagine any guy saying that EVER? Also back on the woman sampler platter - a reference to the invisible people. And she's not talking about that tribe in the Emerald Forest.
Back to finding her voice - who took it from her, besides, you know, the men? I mean was it Mark Penn specifically? Can he go now, please? Even though I want her to lose, I don't ever want to see his Jabba-the-Hutt-with-a-wig ass again.
Meow, etc.
Phoebe
Nevada SEIU just endorsed Obama. I think Obama needs to win Nevada to win the nomination. He'll win SC with or without NV but I'm suspect about the Feb. 5th primaries without a good bit of momentum.
We also may see some "contrast" ads from Obama which will be interesting.
"I think Obama needs to win Nevada to win the nomination. He'll win SC with or without NV but I'm suspect about the Feb. 5th primaries without a good bit of momentum."
Yup.
If Clinton wins NV and avoids third in SC, I think this thing is over.
"We also may see some "contrast" ads from Obama which will be interesting."
That would be interesting. No one's gone up on TV negative yet in this race.
Frankly, I'd be surprised if he does. It'd leave him wide open to "politics of hope?" counterpunching, and it'd damage the Obama brand going forwards, which seems to be their major concern.
Petey - I rely on you for you Edwards bolstering.
Tell me how the Culinary Workers are going to go with their gut and endorse Edwards so he comes in second in NV.
"Petey - I rely on you for you Edwards bolstering. Tell me how the Culinary Workers are going to go with their gut and endorse Edwards so he comes in second in NV."
I assume Culinary goes with Obama.
I think the Edwards stand comes in South Carolina. If he comes in ahead of Clinton, then he can play on 2/5.
I'll get more bolstery soon, but my view at the moment is bleak. If Edwards is pushed to the margins on 2/5, I think Clinton runs right over Obama.
I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the events of the past week. After the debate on Saturday, I thought Edwards and Obama were going to be able to put up a solid roadblock to Clinton, and a few tears tore right through it.
Maureen Dowd has the best piece of political analysis out there today.
Clinton now is formidable in a way she wasn't before this past week. What can stop her? I suppose Clinton Fatigue could return during the next month...
(See? I've gotten bolstery again already.)
One might also associate it with the Disney Channel Original Movie "Cheetah Girls."
Petey, Sexist Sweetey, cannot understand the Edwards and Dowd attacking Hillary Clinton for being a woman just show themselves to be worms. John Edwards, who I might have supported, showed what a worm he is by showing what a sexist he is, but you are not capable of such understanding given your own sexist craziness.
Jennifer, Sexist Sweety, I can't be against Clinton without being a sexist?
If I vote for Edwards instead of Obama, does that make me a racist too?
Silly me. I thought I was supporting the only proud progressive in the race, and it turns out that I'm a sexist racist.
You gotta learn the code to put the accent on the "Si", otherwise it means "If we can". That's not quite as inspiring.
BTW-The Phillies used the slogan "Yes we can" in the 70s. It inspired them to three straight years of losing in the 1st round of the playoffs.
Petey, that is the result of identity politics. Those who elevate sex and the race to a defining policial characteristic naturally are suspicious of the motives of you who do not choose that flavor, even if you reject the flavor for entirely benign reasons. Who said "Either you're with us or you're against us?" The women and race crowds seem to agree, and they are comfortable assigning motives to you.
Thlayli,
That's another reason to support Edwards. F*** El Tri...come on you Yanks!
Whoa, Jodie Foster lives in TORRANCE?
Hillary doesn't stand a chance. Anybody that wants to support her does already. When Edwards drops out of the race, his support will go to Obama. Those of us who oppose Clinton have a hard time choosing between Obama and Edwards, but I think very few of us will even consider voting for Hillary.

What is this. Obama throwing hope and unity under the bus. Does he know that unions generally fight corporations in addition to negotiating with them?
