I know he's the real winner, but isn't fourth place for John McCain kind of pathetic? Conversely, left-for-dead Fred Thompson turns out to still have some residual support. And why not? After all, the idea of Fred Thompson -- a totally normal, non-elderly orthodox conservative -- makes a ton of sense. If his staff can somehow resuscitate their candidate, I think there's clearly a market among the Republican faithful for what Thompson would be selling were he not too lazy to sell it.

Now, Romney or whomever needs to kick his old Navy ass in New Hampshire. Then, Benito needs to be put down like the rabid mutt he is.
Fourth place in Iowa, first place in your heart.
Mavericks don't eat corn, anyway.
This will make his win all the more impressive, as it takes a tough, steely-eyed, square-jawed man to pick himself up, dust himself off, and kick some ass in New Hampshire.
Of course, he has to get through Ron Paul first, who's name is already been printed on the general election ballots as the GOP nominee.
Maybe McCain can be his VP.
Maybe.
Alright, this whole "real winner" thing is worming its way to almost being funny.
Mike Allen on Fox right now:
"Tonight is a big, big win for John McCain. Forget about what the blogs are saying."
"There's almost no one you'd rather be aside from Obama than John McCain right now."
Time for the democratic party to get some people out there talking about how everyone was expecting 18% for McCain (Chris Matthews said so!) and how he utterly failed to deliver. What a loser!
Donna Brazile on CNN signing how good McCain is doing is so stupid.
The sad thing is that he would have finished 3rd (or better) easily if he'd only called for the immediate execution of all immigrants.
Fred Barnes: "This is a perfect result for McCain."
Back to CNN.
I thought Fred Barnes had given TV up in favor of giving Dumbya prostate massages full-time.
I think John McCain could be senile by summer.

Gosh, what a surprise.
Conversely, left-for-dead Fred Thompson turns out to still have some residual support. And why not?
Or, to put it another way: here lies David St. Hubbins, er, Fred Thompson. And why not?
The REAL winner tonight was Bill Bennett and the dime he had on Obama.
Actually, McCain is in 3rd now, thank you very much.
Hang on--did you call Fred Thompson "non-elderly"?
He's only mostly dead.
McCain's back in 4th; will probably stay there. It's probably true that he'll do better in NH, though.
The big difference between 3rd and 4th place for McCain is that, if he comes in 3rd, there's a good chance Fred Thompson will drop out (that's been the rumor from The Politico). But if McCain stays in fourth, Thompson stays in the race. Fred Barnes and the rest of the Beltway conservatives love McCain because he's pro-cheap labor.
"I think John McCain could be senile by summer."
You're late by several years, if not decades.
In the real world, McCain lost. Which is what happened last time, when he met actual political opposition. History sometimes does repeat itself, particularly when it's the same people doing the same things.
I remember being a little afraid upon hearing about Fred Thompson running, because he just exudes that good ol' boy stench that gets red staters horny. The numbers in Iowa have helped confirm my paranoia. In a country where a made up quality called "presidentiality" is considered a necessary feature to get elected, someone like Fred could get elected just because of how well he could fake it. So I suppose I'm glad he's an early to bed late to rise kind of guy.
I had a good laugh when I passed through TN before Xmas and picked up Nashville's free alt-weekly. They had a loving piece on Fred, and concluded that the press just wasn't being fair by tagging him as 'lazy'.

"Imagine if he actually tried."
Sounds like a bumper sticker to me.
