But They Love Hillary in Hell's Kitchen

19 Feb 2008 12:43 pm

Right at the intersection of the horse race and my interest in foreign policy comes this dispatch from Obama, Japan where, it seems, they like Barack Obama.

Someone should find out how they like Hillary Clinton in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

Actually, I live in Clinton Hill and am proud to say we were 73% Obama, highest in the city, if not the state:

But, according to the map you posted, it does look like Hell's Kitchen = Clinton.

Hell hath no fury like a Hillary scorned.

Matt, are you being sexist?

Donboy:

That's the joke. The neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen is now called "Clinton."

Matt, you probably should clarify this before your subtle nod to midtown Manhattan real estate re-branding gets mis-interpreted as a suggestion that Hillary is Satan, causing further public histrionics and a call from the Clinton campaign for the Atlantic to fire you.

Actually, as a resident of said neighborhood, um, no we don't love her there. Even though Nadler supported her.

Yeah though, maybe you should make that joke a little more transparent for the non-manhattanites.

OMG you horrible sexist creep! You used "Hillary" and "kitchen" the same sentence! Also, all of your sentences end with a little dot, known as a "period". Creep!

Maybe some people are right for comparing Obama supporters with Nazis and Communists.

More specifically, the real devotion should be where the Chelsea and Clinton neighborhoods meet, eh?

And, FWIW, none of us who actually live in Hell's Kitchen call it "Clinton". That's just realtorspeak. Hell, I used to get such a kick out of telling my worrying parents back in Georgia -- who couldn't believe I'd ever move to NYC anyway -- about my wandering around at night in "Hell's Kitchen." Hehe.

Well I really stumbled onto an intelligent, substantive discussion. I'm impressed.

Maybe now we can discuss Barack Obama's favorite color.

From now often, I will take it under advisement that Matthew likes to provoke an intentional misunderstanding now and again. :)

Yes, but does Daredevil, the Man Without Fear? As a high-priced attorney, one would expect him to be part of Obama's wine-track coalition, but his working-class roots theoretically make him susceptible to a Clintonite pitch.

JA,

But the Clinton campaign wouldn't really be after Matt, they would be sending a message to Sullivan.

Maybe now we can discuss Barack Obama's favorite color.

Now, I shouldn't say this to y'all, 'cause I know how you folks love to twist my words to fit your sensationalist media narratives, but it's pretty clear that Obama's favorite color is black.

As for geography, I think Hillary's strength in New York should be obvious--she dominates Upstate, in working class cities like White Plains, and in New York City, along bustling boulevards like Broadway--the famous "Great White Way."

Obama draws his real strength from rural areas like the Black Hills of South Dakota; from college towns like Blacksburg, VA; and from celebrities like Brad Pitt, star of the hit film Meet Joe Black. Now, I love to kid Hillary about her crush on Brad Pitt, but she's always been more partial to Disney classics like Snow White.

And, FWIW, none of us who actually live in Hell's Kitchen call it "Clinton". That's just realtorspeak.

I thought the realtorspeak was Midtown West.

HK is young and pretty gay. I'd imagine that it's Obama country....(yes, I get the "Clinton" joke)

More specifically, the real devotion should be where the Chelsea and Clinton neighborhoods meet, eh?

The building on the corner of my block is the "Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center." Either the place is at least twenty years old or someone had a sense of humor.

I thought Hillary Clinton's favorite color was purple, after the color of the stripe on Roman Senate gowns, and the color of the grapes grown in upstate New York, used for making Hillary's favorite beverage, red wine. A lot of people have have associated the Clintons with the word, hell; a spiritual realm of evil and suffering. Then there's my favorite Hillary book, Hell To Pay, by the late Barbara Olson: http://theseedsof9-11.com

OK: I didn't know about Hell's Kitchen being called "Clinton". I guess I thought that "Hillary" and "Hell" sounded alike and that was the reference. I was going for Clinton "Hill"[ary], see...

Believe it or not, the vagaries of Manhattan realtor-speak are not generally known to a national audience.

The building on the corner of my block is the "Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center." Either the place is at least twenty years old or someone had a sense of humor.

In the early '90s, when Bill Clinton was first elected president, the name of this community newspaper for the West 20s to West 50s received a lot of attention.

This discussion makes me feel old.

There is also, I believe, a neighborhood paper called the Chelsea-Clinton something or other that predates the presidency and the urban-revival-era real-estate rebranding effort.

From w-pedia:
"The Clinton name originated in 1959 in an attempt to link the area to DeWitt Clinton Park at 52nd and 11th Avenue" which predates "SoHo", "Tribeca", "SoHa" &c.
