An NC Primary Primer

27 Mar 2008 08:37 am

An excellent rundown courtesy of Matt Compton. I suppose this is an obvious point to make, but you've got to assume that some of the states who were so eager to move their primaries up to February 5 are having some regrets right now. New Jersey just kinda got lost in the shuffle back in the day as a Clinton quasi-home state, but if they had an April 8 primary we'd all be hearing about the unique challenges facing the Garden State right now.

Having some regrets? I hope the Democratic parties in FL and MI are giving themselves a hearty kicking from here to 2012 for being such idiots and trying to move their primary up so that they would "matter".

Add in the fact that if they waited, they would have both received an extra 30 delegates each and they sound doubly retarded. Think about it - the last election came down to Ohio. Ohio waited. Pennsylvania waited even longer. Florida of course has to go and fuck everything up for everyone. The bigger question is what the fuck Michigan was thinking?

As a Tar Heel born and bred, it makes me very happy to see my state actually mattering on the national political front, especially since we haven't produced a President since James K. Polk, and very few national political figures of any particular importance (Jesse Helms? John Edwards? Elizabeth @$%#$%& Dole??) in the last half-century.

(tar heel bred but not born here) ugh, unfortunately i dont think our state had anything to do with "producing" elizabeth dole. more like she chose us to be her gateway. there are a lot of important races going on may 6 other than the dem. primary here---including who tries to knock off liddy dole.

we went to the obama organizational meeting last night in raleigh---the venue was literally overflowing. we were all packed in like sardines--there was no way we weren't violating fire code. if that is ANY indication on how much of a stronghold obama has here.....

It's hard to argue with imaginary people who "you have to assume [to be] having some regrets right now", but to them I would say: there were almost a dozen Dem candidates at the beginning, and now there are two. That happened because of voters in early states like you. You can't expect to both get a vote at the winnowing-out stage and then another one at the deciding stage.

I'm a coordinator with Durham for Obama. We have been building up steam for about a month and a half now. We have an organizational meeting tonight and I expect it to be overflowing even with UNC playing at the same time. We have over 400 registered volunteers so far and we're still growing.

As a Garden Stater born and raised (on the playground is where I spent most of my days...) I certainly wish NJ kept its traditional June primary date!

Obama and Clinton could've walked along the Jersey shore with their surrogates Bradley and Corzine, eating Jersey produce, and playing some boardwalk games. Then off to the urban areas to get shot and robbed in Newark or Camden and finally a sit down at some fancy-pants fundraiser at night!

All the while, Bill and Chelsea milling about, either not taking college students' questions or waving their finger in the face of one who dares to question them. No thanks!

It really isn't too bad we got lost in the Feb. 5th shuffle.

That's a really good point about the February 5th states. I changed my registration from New Jersey to Virginia right before Super Tuesday, and I was afraid my vote would not count because it would be over by Super Tuesday. But Virginia ended up being important, and I am proud that we gave Obama one of his biggest primary victories of the season.

Kind of ironic that the states that were too lazy, sclerotic or just plain not interested in playing presidential primary leapfrog...now have the eyes of the nation on them for a month!
