Several good points came up in comments on the Starbucks/Dunkin' Donuts thread, including the point that Starbucks isn't really much of a pointy-headed elitist choice (try an independent shop!) and the fact that Hillary Clinton's base among old women probably doesn't drink a ton of takeout coffee of any sort,

I don't need you to tell me how fucking good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Hillary goes shopping she buys SHIT. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It AIN'T the coffee in my kitchen, it's my tournament bracket.

"Only a 26 year old twerp would think over 40 is old.
Do you think your boys Andrew and Barack are old or does this only apply to women?"
In fairness, I said over 60 in my comment. And yes, I think that is old.
Also, I'm a bit older than 26. (Though I'm closer to that age than I am to 60).
Ok, I'll bite. Slow news day Matt? I've never seen you post on comments so much. I know the March Madness has it's grip. Is this just for our amusement? If so, thank you for your consideration.
I know that the over-65 crowd in my neighborhood were upset a few years ago at the closing of the local McDonald's, because that's where they hung out to drink coffee. The Starbucks and the other coffee shop are considerably more expensive, and the coffee there may not be as much to their taste anyway.
Anyone who thinks women (or men) over 60 don't drink coffee doesn't interact with people of that age. The coffee renaissance that Starbucks embodies is a joke to the senior citizen. Coffee is just about the only beverage they've drunk their entire lives, other than alcohol. They drink coffee before during and after every meal of the day.
Sure, they don't get their coffee from Starbucks or Dunkins (they make it at home themselves in an automatic drip machine), but they drink it by the gallon. And they were drinking it by the gallon before it was cool to do so.
Anonymous just made the funniest comment of the year.
Even funnier when you un-edit it.

Well, yes, but the "pointy-headed elitist" vote would just barely get Obama into Kucinich territory.
"Pointy-head elitists" need to be constantly reminded that they are such a tiny proportion of the electorate that politicians are always wise to completely ignore them.
Sorry, but my 70 year-old mom is a big Clinton fan and ONLY buys Starbucks coffee.
Ya know, I wish people in the media would figure out that NOBODY SANE answers their land line phones anymore--if they even have one. The only people I know (my rural Pennsylvania Republican in-laws who still use a phone they bought in 1978) who do are stuck in some kind of 50's time warp or have some other strange quality that makes them want to take an unscreened call from complete strangers.
There are no accurate surveys or polls any more--they're all skewed towards wierdos.
I am outraged that this whole thread has ignored my demographic:
the TEA Democrats.
Though widely perceived as Anglophilic poofters, we are in fact the rock-ribbed backbone of progressive politics in this country, with a tradition of tough-minded activism going back to the Boston Tea Party in 1773.
Yes, thank you ella, for reminding us why phone surveys are crap.
When I lived in MST, I was getting HAMMERED by dinnertime calls. The first step was to break years of conditioning by hanging up on sales/survey calls in mid pitch. The second was to let the machine screen the call.
Now that I'm in HST, the automated call systems hit the machine when nobody's home, and all I hear when reviewing them are a series of clicks.
A blatant plug for Big Bear Cafe in DC. After you get your copy of Heads in the Sand, head over for some great indie coffee or tea.
Ted, let us now commence the great Pekoe / Green Tea war of 2008 for the soul of the Democratic party.
The CEO of Starbucks stopped into my favorite coffee-shop the other day, ordered up, and announced it was the best cup he had ever had. If you're in NYC, try Cafe Grumpy on West 20th Street, and discover what coffee really tastes like.
Big up for the Pulp Fiction reference by Anonymous!!
Matt, Ledo's in Adelphi has good coffee, in the quasi-fancy Italian pots and cups, and I bet the clientele is 40-40-20 Obama-Clinton-McCain. But there's only one way to find out...
Also, old people LOVE Starbucks these days. That's the only place my dad would go for at least 3 years. He's migrated to Panera, so I think the scene was getting a little too old even for him.
All my pointy-headed liberal elite friends back home talk trash about Starbucks (kind of like that band you like way back before they got popular). Personally, I like their coffee and effect they've had on the larger coffee market.
I think it would be interesting to analyze the drink choices of the supporters of each candidate. Do poorer folks tend to buy more plain coffee (because it's cheap) or fancier drinks (because it's Starbucks is a special treat)? Who drinks the "not coffee" coffee drinks and who drinks the "real coffee" coffee drinks?
