Richard Mellon-Scaife, well-known friend of progressive causes, announces that he has "a very different impression of Hillary Clinton today" than he used to, and "it’s a very favorable one indeed." No doubt he fears that Barack Obama's rhetoric of unity indicates that he may sell out to the right wing once in office. Lanny Davis, Clinton attack dog and Joe Lieberman fan, remarks of Scaife that he "would like to shake his hands for keeping his mind open despite the predisposed prejudice toward her." How nice.

The obvious question for the folks in Team Hillary is:
"Do you folks believe Scaife's ceased to be committed to the hardcore conservatism he's been pushing for all these years?"
If their answer is No, then what does that say when Scaife finds Hillary acceptable, but not Obama?
If their answer is Yes, we can all have a good belly-laugh, and talk about Hillary's naivete.
She's got to renounce, denounce, reject, abjure and execrate Scaife! And three out of four won't do it!
Slimy superrich inheritor Republican Richard Mellon-Scaife supports Clinton.
Slimy superrich inheritor Peretz / Sullivan acolyte Matthew Yglesias supports Obama.
I'd say it balances out quite nicely.
I'd say it balances out quite nicely.
That's because you've a soft spot Southern Conservatives and the ass-licking DLC hacks who love them. People who don't hate the mass of the Democratic party--or the Blue states, generally--weigh things differently.
We should lock Petey and Al in a room and not let them out until they murder each other/make love.
We should lock Petey and Al in a room and not let them out until they murder each other/make love.
To be fair, I don't think Al's ever pretended to be a Democrat.
The fact that she can sit in the same room as that monster without spitting on him, after what he has said about her and her family for so many years, demonstrates exactly what kind of person she is.

The mind ponders an Ygelsias-Clinton meeting...
Well, that's one possible interpretation, but here's another...
Back in 2003 or whatever, there was a story in the paper that Scaife had concluded that Bush was such a totally horrible and disastrous president in so many different ways, he concluded that his arch-nemesis Bill Clinton had actually been a pretty good president by comparison, and he wished he were back in office, Monica and all.
Now when Bush ran, he ran as a sort of "blank slate" without much real political experience, a little like Obama. By contrast, Hillary has been around forever, and everyone knows all her numerous negatives and can pretty much predict exactly what she'll do as president.
So maybe the Bush experience has just presuaded Scaife to stop taking chances...
"Slimy superrich inheritor Peretz / Sullivan acolyte Matthew Yglesias supports Obama."
Matthew, you brilliant, witty, and underappreciated author and gentleman! Kin I haz moni now plz k thnxs.
A year ago, if some pundit had predicted the warm and fuzzy feelings that would evolve between Scaife and Clinton, they would have been told to take a leave of absence while their medication was adjusted, or to at least post these things in the fanfic* section.
I'm enjoying the blog even more now that Matt seems to have decided Clinton has crossed the silliness threshold.
*The internet being what it is, it's possible a Scaife-Clinton fanfic site exists. I don't want to know.
Hillary has strange bedfellows, not excepting the sex addict, Bill. Note that another bedfellow, Hillary supporter, Gov. Rendell of Pennsylvania, has said that our nation does not need a unifier leader like Obama as President. Instead, Hillary, the premier disunifier, promises solutions instead of unity. Rendall is speaking out against the UNITED States of America and for a DISUNITED States, divided by race, gender, age, class, etc, because that is all that Hillary will be able to produce. She will disunite us all. What solutions will be possible then? Eight more years of paralysis and the death watch for our beloved nation, with the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynasties. Wake up, superdelegate patriots, and turn the page for US all. Thank you, Senator Amy Klobuchar! The UNITED States forever!
Its a symbiotic relationship. Scaife needs a polarizing figure like Clinton in the WH.

No, it's all about WaPo Op-Ed page slash fiction, with the EJ Dionne/George Will slash being the most popular.
RKU,
If Scaife was just a columnist who wrote editorials opposing Clinton your theory would make sense. He wasn't, he claimed she murdered Vincent Foster.
"So maybe the Bush experience has just presuaded Scaife to stop taking chances..."
Why, YES! It all makes perfect sense now!
This just in from AP. "Scaife finds Jesus, says to young boy, 'Fetch the fattest Christmas goose. Tiny-Tim will get that operation! God bless us, everyone!'" Scaife's personal physician claims the Scaife's heart grew three sizes after meeting with Clinton...
Fah who for-aze!
Dah who dor-aze!
Welcome Christmas,
Come this way!
And all the Democrats down in Liberalville, rejoiced, and, Scaife, yes, Scaife himself carved the roast goose...
If, by some miracle or exceptionally dirty tactics, Clinton won the nomination, Scaife would throw her under the bus the very next day.
It's official: Hillary's now more likely to follow Lieberman's career path than Bill Clinton's or Al Gore's.
Bill Clinton went on Rush Limbaugh's show (!), the Clinton campaign was forwarding lying stories about Obama from the American Spectator (!), and Hillary is cozying up to R.M. Scaife.
Apart from showing how symbiotic HRC is with the "vast rightwing conspiracy), I think it shows the Clintons need some world-class smear merchants to dump slime on Obama. And there are no smear merchants like these scuzzballs.
So charming of the Obama people to express outrage that Hillary would meet with her nemesis--so good of them to spring to Hillary's defense against the person who caused her so much grief.
"Back in 2003 or whatever, there was a story in the paper that Scaife had concluded that Bush was such a totally horrible and disastrous president in so many different ways,"
Dubious claim. Bush has been a terrific president from the standpoint of the super wealthy. Tax cuts, reduced regulation and oversight, free trade, fighting against the 'death tax'-- from the standpoint of the super rich, Bush has been a phenomenal president. Maybe even the best rich man's president since the 1920s.
It's simple. Clinton will do anything to win at this point, and Scaife wants her as the nominee for ratings.
I see the Obama people have their talking points down--pretty pat, too.
Does anyone have an original thought?
bjd:

Well, look. I've never met Scaife and I can't read his mind, but I DO remember reading that article (in 2003??) saying he was telling all his friends that Bush was so unbelievably horrible he really wished Clinton was back in office, and---all things considered---Clinton had really been a pretty good President after all.
Maybe I'm just hallucinating, and someone can do a quick Nexis search and prove I'm totally insane.
But you should also consider that a President like Bush who goes a long way to destroying the country, destroying our financial system, destroying the world economy, and destroying our Constitution may look pretty bad EVEN to a very rich rightwinger!
This is deeply ironic. Much of Obama's appeal has is a promise to bring otherwise antagonistic people together. So Clinton sits in Obama's chair, figuratively speaking, and the Obama partisans are outraged.
Congrats, Obama partisans / HRC antipartisans! You've found a way to have bringing people together become sinister!
"I see the Obama people have their talking points down--pretty pat, too."
"Does anyone have an original thought?"
Oooooh! Burn!
Gotchu obamaboticatrans there, huh? Well? Huh? Didn't he? Hello, this thing on?
Seriously, J.P., I's just futzin' wit ya.
"But you should also consider that a President like Bush who goes a long way to destroying the country, destroying our financial system, destroying the world economy, and destroying our Constitution may look pretty bad EVEN to a very rich rightwinger!"
Just the other day Scaife was seen singing, "I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way...". He then entered a church, broke down in tears and asked God's forgiveness for a life of sin,
"OH LORD!" he said, "Please, forgive me for my Bush-lovin' ways. I've seen the light, Oh Lord! And that light wears tasteful pantsuits."
"Dear Lord," he continued, "please allow me the strength to help implement universal healthcare, the good wisdom to protect the rights of all human beings regardless of political presuasions[sic], and let the holy spirit come upon me so that I might give up all my worldly possessions in service of my country and its glorious constitution."
Then church bells rang, the children sang, and all humankind came together in peace and harmony...
Let's stop analyzing Scaife . . . It is not tough to understand why he would prefer Clinton as POTUS and not Obama. Clinton would continue the Wall Street/ Walmart control while Obama - due to his personality - might be able to upset the apple cart by energizing the unwashed masses . . . Scaife will vote for McCain in November but he is just hedging by talking up Clinton now.

Oops, doublely posteded. My sincerest apologies...
Petey's comparison would only make sense if Peretz was the balance to Scaife. (Assuming we just ignore the millions spent and the lies told.)
I think that sums it up nicely.
Of all the strange accusations lobbed at Yglesias by Clinton supporters, the claim that he's a "Peretz Acolyte" is by far the most humorous.
"This is deeply ironic. Much of Obama's appeal has is a promise to bring otherwise antagonistic people together. So Clinton sits in Obama's chair, figuratively speaking, and the Obama partisans are outraged.
"Congrats, Obama partisans / HRC antipartisans! You've found a way to have bringing people together become sinister!"
Huh? So, if Obama really wants to live up to his reputation as someone who can bring antagonistic people together, he needs to sit down with Scaife (the man who founded/funded the Arkansas Project) and tell Scaife that he doesn't approve of the church Hillary Clinton attends? Who would have thought it could be so easy?
Seriously, don't care if you're an Obama or Hillary supporter, there is no (not even an itsy, bitsy, teeny tiny) reason to even acknowledge that Richard Mellon Scaife is even partly human being. The man has done great damage to our country, well beyond the Clintons, that would take much more than this post comment to document. The idea of any Democrat currying his favor sickens me...
“Why do I have to keep proving to people that I am not a liar?!”
-Hillary Rodham Clinton, 2000
Hillary Clinton does lie. No matter what anybody says or does, Hillary will continue to lie, and thank goodness for that. She’s going to get caught; just you wait and see: http://theseedsof9-11.com
"Reaching out" doesn't have to include getting buddy-buddy with scum. If Obama went to lunch with Sean Hannity, I'd have some serious questions.
Again, nice to see so many Obama supporters sticking up for Hillary.
Again, nice to see so many Obama supporters sticking up for Hillary.
Hillary sat down with a man who quite literally accused her of murdering Vince Foster. Richard Melon Scaife is beyond redemption. To speak with his newspaper and use an American Spectator column to attack one of Obama's supporters is beyond the pale.
Folks, I keep telling you: Clinton is a member of "The Family" - a RIGHT WING conservative Christian political group. She hob-knobs with right wing Republicans at Family meetings and (sex-segregated) retreats and Congressional prayer breakfasts.
Now maybe you can argue that she's just "infiltrating" (like Cameron in "The Terminator") to defuse the right wing. Fat chance.
She's hooking up with these clowns because she wants the same power they have and for the same reasons.
This is who she IS.
Get a clue.
I recall that Scaife was a guest at at least one of the formal events at the Clinton White House, but everybody in the power elite is on the list for those things.
Otherwise, what asdf said.
I wondering why the Hillary attack drones don't insist that Obama accept and rejoice in Louis Farrakhan's endorsement. He should seek out David Duke and cultivate him too, right? Because otherwise he's not a unity candidate like Hillary, what with her Scaife, Limbaugh, and Murdoch connections. Yay, Hillary! Yay, Scaife! U! Ni! Ty!
