Surging to Delicious

25 Mar 2008 02:42 pm

Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations is taking suggestions about future episodes. See Spencer Ackerman's video proposal for a trip to sample the culinary delights of Iraqi Kurdistan (video's not strictly appropriate for children). I'd watch that.

I can't see the video, but presumably Matthew is recommending somewhere where Bourdain can sample the goat, right?

He says "um" a lot when he's talking. As do you, Matt - or maybe you're more of an "uh" guy? I forget.

For future Table appearances, and future requests to t.v. food critics, perhaps the two of you should sit around for a while and practice talking without saying "um."

See if you guys can go a couple minutes without uttering an "um" (or an "uh").

Why not sample the culinary delights of Haiti, such as dirt pies? After all, "sometimes you just crave dirt".

Bourdain did visit Beirut, just as it went under attack.

SoCalJustice, I can only assume, is a mellifluous and elegant extemporaneous orator, particularly when there's a camera in front of his face.

In defense of anonymous blog readers like SoCal, it's not like he's trying to push into TV. There's a reason those TV folk make bucks, as frivolous as their jobs often seem. They've studied the art of talking while minimizing the use of "uh" and "um" and other verbal placeholders. Study Katie Couric, dude. LEARN HER WAYS!

Kurdish women are pretty delicious too.

Btw Kebobs are Iranian, not Arabic. Look it up.

1. Iran
2. Avante-guard molecular cooking in Spain.
3. Follow-up trip to Portugal emphasizing the differences in Portugee and Spanish culture and cuisine.
4. Canuck Land! Sugar pies!
5. Kerala, India.
6. Amish Country.

I appreciate that suggesting Iraqi Kurdistan is a topical joke.

As a practical matter, there isn't much difference between "Persian" and "Kurdish" cuisine (from an Amerikai pov), so it'd be an easy substitution to take the show to Isfahan or Sanandaj.

I would idly suggest that he might want to visit the kitchen of his own bleeding restaurant, if only for the novelty.

In his book Tyler Cowen says that Haiti is actually a great place to go for restaurant tourism.

dsquared: that was, in fact, the exact premise of the final episode of this season's run of his TV show. (And to be fair, Bourdain has been retired from Les Halles for several years now.)

Nice. Defensive and arrogant. A typical, but eminently stupid, reaction to constructive criticism.

Helter happens to be exactly right. I worked in TV news for 7 years, and the best on air "talent" (anchors, reporters, guests...) were either the people who were born to do it (a minority, but they exist), and those that worked hard, often doing what would seem silly to a normal person (practicing how to talk! - in mirrors, in front of friends/family/coworkers, and in front of a camera on tape....)....

But honestly, after seeing your reaction, I hope you listen to neither of us and continue to think of yourself as above the need to work or improve.

You should send that tape to ABC. I'm sure they'll scoop you up as their next foreign correspondent. What network exec in his right mind would, er, uh, um, pass that up?

Geez. You badly need to get over yourself. At least Matt has the self-deprication thing down.

1) Bangkok - I don't think he's been yet
2) Istanbul
3) Iran (bounce around the country)
4) Buenos Aires

How about North Korea so that they can kill and eat him? Anthony Bourdain is a fucking asshole who thinks he's a lot more cultured and cosmopolitan than he actually is. I kept on hoping on Top Chef last year that CJ or Tre round house kick him in the fact repeatedly.

Cougaring it up?

How about North Korea so that they can kill and eat him?

Didn't he already go to North Korea? Or was it just to the DMZ? I forget.
