The Truth Comes Out

11 Mar 2008 02:45 pm

After my remarks on the evils of the telephone it started to seem that everyone who's anyone in the blogosphere hates phone calls. But now we learn the truth -- Ezra Klein loves talking on the phone. He, in short, is the person who keeps this horrible advice in business. If we could just kill him off, then we'd all live happily ever after with SMS-sending devices in our pockets. Maybe he's got Skype shares or something?

Wow Matt, you're blogging up a storm today, what gives?

Add Rush Limbaugh to your list. He mentioned on his show today how he hates getting phone calls at home and prefers corresponding via e-mail, etc. using his Mac.

And so does the FT's Lucy Kellaway: "Let us put an end to the trauma of the telephone"

Jeeze, killing him for bad advice? He's no where near the top of my list.

this horrible advice in business

Not a homonym, not really a misspelling.

A new category of error?

I can't even figure out what word he means by "advice".

speaking as a lawyer, there are definitely things i would rather discuss over the phone than by any medium that leaves text lying on someone's hard drive somewhere.

Too late to own Skype shares. You have to own eBay shares - something I wouldn't recommend.

"this horrible advice" = "this horrible DEVICE"

More typographical mishaps from Mathtew Ylgesaiss.

I stop by here every so often, then see an example of sloppiness & incomprehensible gibberish like this, and stay away for a while. Every time I come back tho, I find a fresh reminder of why it's been a while since my last visit.

Much like the English refer to the Guardian as the Grauniad, MY ought to be known henceforth as Mathtew Ylgesais or maybe just Ylgesiass. Pronounced in my mind as ill-geez-ee-ass.

I suppose we should just hope that somebody like Ezra doesn't come into a position of power and decide to protect us all from our bad decision to not like the telephone.

Ezra is CUTE. The phone is the thing that was always for him when it rang when he was in high school.

Sinbad stopped by and MY's trying to look busy so he doesn't get roped into making Houeguest 2: Bring Your Whole Crew. He also made sure that Sinbad chose where to eat next cuz he's so experienced at that.

Well it doesn't break my streak of never agreeing with Klein about anything.

Ezra is correct, phone calls are better then text. They're more spontaneous, if you make a person laugh (or cry), the emotional connection is deeper; you get immediate feedback on your words, if you have to criticize someone, its easy to soften the blow. And for legal reasons, phone calls are the smart play, wiretapped conversations usually don't get recorded until after the Feds get involved. In contrast, the Feds can time travel and recover your "private" words and thoughts from IMs or emails weeks or months ago).

In short, Ezra is clearly a superior human being.

"this horrible advice in business"

It's kinda like rhyming slang*, but not - more like sloppy misspelling slang. Perhaps it will become a whole new argot (or should that be a whole new ergot?)

* that would be: you don't like to talk on the dog?

Phones are the work of the Devil, and Ezra serves the same.

But . . . Ezra has a biblical name, he can't be of the devil!

Plus, I agree with him on phones. I hate, HATE texting. With a passion. I'll put up with typing, but I like actually talking to people on the phone. I waste my family's time a lot now because I call them whenever, especially now that they all have phones. I can't imaging staying in touch in any other way.

So hooray for phones!

I do share one annoyance with them - I prefer to make calls, and there are times when I absolutely hate receiving them, especially if it is from somebody I don't know. I also prefer to do tech support, customer service, etc through e-mail. Its just easier to write about a problem than to attempt to describe it over the phone on the spot. Then, if you are misunderstood, they can point to the words they don't get, and you can explain them specifically.
