Wow

Peter Brimlow, one of the really really really hard-core anti-immigration conservatives, seems to pretty profoundly hate William F. Buckley in terms that certainly make it seem as if Buckley must have been doing something right.

I see the word "vdare" and think "white supremacy". I'm not sure the term "hard-core anti-immigration conservative" is quite strong enough.

There's no way in hell I'm reading anything on that VDARE website.

Wow is right. Just in the first few lines we get this:

...evidence of Buckley's unmistakable effeminate streak...

Then this:

...he characteristically declined to raise the matter with me man (so to speak) to man.

Vdare's notorious for its racism, so I guess questioning Buckley's heterosexual bona fides ain't that big a stretch. Truly miserable people.

Yeah, I think of Brimelow as akin to Jared Taylor, another "conservative" who went totally off the deep end into outright racism.

In his book, Brimelow compared the changing racial makeup of America to a dirty diaper. Being attacked by him would be something to be proud of.

I use LibNet as my ISP, and they have blockers in place that completely shut off vdare, worldNUTdaily, and other sites. I couldn't read them even if I wanted to! I've also put springy metal bits inside the dials of all my radios so I can tune past hate radio stations without even hearing their signals at all. Well, I'm off to the bookstore to move Jonah Goldberg's book to the Cats section. Ciao!

Re ChuckE

Actually, Mr. Brimelow may be more akin to Michael Savage (nee Weiner).

There's no way in hell I'm reading anything on that VDARE website.

That goes double for me. What, Matt--Jonah Goldberg wasn't an easy enough target?

I'm doing some research for a forthcoming NRO piece (for Jonah's LF blog). Can anyone here confirm for me whether LoneWacko.com is, in fact, a dating service for single habitual masturbators?

Brimelow is a white supremacist and VDare is a white supremacist site. (It’s not coincidence that Steve Sailor writes for them.) He’s given too much room by Forbes and major TV news shows, though, and sometimes even academic conferences. It should be consistently repeated that his reasons for opposing immigration are to keep precious white bodily fluids pure and nothing else.

People still use "you better beware of them Irishmen and their Popery" arguments in public?

Wow! Talk about the seething hatred alas just under the surface in American life.

OTOH, what kind of name is "Brimelow"? I'd be careful if I were him, Brimelow sounds awfully, um, Germanic. Of course, the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, et al., were Germanic tribes, so he could very well be a "true American" (I assume the likes of Brimelow don't cotton well to the real, true Americans of our land's native peoples), but still, with that sort of ancestry, he could be one of those swarthy, not-quite white Germans or he may even perhaps have some ancestors who were of the, er, Hebrew persuasion.

His motivations may be suspect, but his characterization of WFB as a vane man not much interested in intellectual discourse off the public forums sounds about right for a man born of wealth who did not much care for the not so wealthy and wrote on the 'Negro Problem' and the desirability of McCarthyism.

Brimelow is a committed racist, and that's why he doesn't like Buckley, an opportunistic racist. Still, I suspect his portrait of Buckley is a more honest one than that provided by David Brooks and his finger bowls.

Buckley must have been doing something right.

That's one theory. Another is that people who really, really hate immigrants are just hateful people in general.

Brimelow's argument that for WFB, "everything was personal," is just stupid. The best thing about Buckley was that he didn't make it personal. He was friends with the people he argued with for a living. He recognized that reasonable people could disagree. That's one reason he seems like such an anachronism.

He seems to think that that O'Sullivan guy got a real raw deal, but I think he's on the NRO website and I don't think he vented his rage on being wronged over there.

Angry young men are annoying, but one should have a bit of patience with them as they will probably grow out of it. Angry old men are ridiculous.

...hate William F. Buckley in terms that certainly make it seem as if Buckley must have been doing something right.

Matthew, I think you liked Old Bill quite a good deal. It shows, because since his, uh, "passing", you seem in your posts to be praising him by faint damning.

That's your right, of course. I don't expect you to be critical of someone you admire. But, using this example ... "Well, if Brimlow (so obviously wacky on this issue) hates Old Bill over his views on it... well, then Old Bill must have been right!"

In terms of argument, it's a bit of a fallacy, no?

Yeah, there are a whole bunch of guys on the hard right who really hated Buckley, seeing him as an establishment sell-out peddling a safe brand of conservatism. Now we're going to here from them: it'll be interesting to see what the John Birch Society says, and Joseph Sobran, and the Chronicles crowd of paleo-cons.

I once saw Brimlow and Michelle Malkin on a panel with some "moderates" talking about immigration in the post-9/11 world. Almost got into a fight with a guy in the audience who was bemoaning the lack of Whites-only subways in NYC. Good man, good times! ;-)

TLB wrote: "I use LibNet as my ISP, and they have blockers in place that completely shut off vdare, worldNUTdaily, and other sites..." Man, I hope I'm misunderstanding something here, but why would you use an ISP that prevents you from going to any web sites? Are you an adult? (And I mean that sincerely - I have no heartburn with parents using site-blockers.) I mean, seriously, get a new ISP. I'm far left but routinely read right-wing sites. Nothing wrong with that and nothing your ISP should be deciding for you.

TLB thought he was being funny.

"Peter Brimlow... seems to pretty profoundly hate William F. Buckley in terms that certainly make it seem as if Buckley must have been doing something right."

The "something right" was presumably firing Peter Brimelow from the National Review. Of course, Buckley also did something wrong: hiring Brimlow in the first place.

Kevin: Thank you. I feel much better now.

How great is the Olde Country English hating on the Irish opening?

Bob: I couldn't be funny if I tried. And, I don't have time for hate!

Let me tell you what happened yesterday. As I was walking in to my local *independently-owned* bookstore looking forward to a relaxing afternoon of browsing, I almost fainted as I saw the ugly face of Jonah Goldberg on a display next to his odious book. I literally could not believe my eyes. What is that doing here? Silver Lake is no place for hate! Ours is a wonderful community, a sharing place but also a place that's strong through diversity. I immediately went outside and called Councilmember EricGarcetti's office and complained. He's led several efforts to drive hate from our community, and he frequently refers to it as a hate-free zone. They were sympathetic to my concerns, but I was shocked to hear that they couldn't do anything about it because it's private property.

But, I was determined to drive hate from our community! Thus, I and a collective of other liberals are now engaged in "direct action", moving JG's odious hate-filled screed to the Cats section.

Well, after a brief stop back here for a gluten-free lunch, I'm off to B&N now. Ciao!

There are a whole bunch of guys on the hard right who hate everybody. The Stormfront white supremacist types hate everyone from Bush to Peroutka; I hardly think that a racist hating a mainstream conservative makes the conservative right.

Buckley once famously characterized Pat Buchanan as an anti-semite, so that may be one of the bugs up Brimelow's ass.

Well, I think Brimelow's hit piece on Buckley is what our intelligence agencies might call "raw intel." Basically, you go around to someone's personal enemies and write down all the nasty and malicious things they say, whether plausible or not.

But, then, unless you're America asking Chalabi about Saddam's WMD, you should use that raw intel merely as a starting point for thorough research and checking.

For example, there's an interesting claim that Buckley wasn't really as wealthy as he pretended to be, and as a consequence he was involved in some multi-million-dollar stock fraud or something, in which he admitted his guilt to the SEC.

Now I hadn't read a word of this in any of the 117 lengthy hagiographic obituaries I'd skimmed in the MSM media, and I don't have a clue whether it's true, but it certainly should be easy to check.

If it is true, you really have to ask yourself why anybody uses the NYT, the WSJ, and WashPost for anything but bird-cage-lining...

RKU -- John Judis, in his excellent biography of Buckley, goes into the SEC matter and Buckley's financial troubles of the late 1970s. Basically, the situation is not as Brimelow describes it. Buckley was inattentive to financial matters and a trusted underling committed some fraud. There is a reason why the Times, et al, didn't go into it -- it's less significant than WFB than Buckley's ideology, the magazine he founded, and his impact on American politics.

I don't think anything in Brimelow's essay should be trusted - I know Buckley's life rather well and Brimelow gets a lot of it wrong.

Re Brimlow's comment about "evidence of Buckley's unmistakable effeminate streak"
---------------

1) This is kinda hilarious coming from someone who --in the same breath :
a) Refers to a 1990s grievance with Buckley
b) Chooses now -- 12 years later -- to stab Buckley in the back to repay that grievance
c) But ONLY AFTER Buckley's corpse has gotten cold --just to play it safe

Usually you have to look at George W Bush's military record to see martial valor of that magnitude

Wow, long.

I'd never heard of the guy until now but where does somebody who was born in England and emigrated to Canada and then the United States get off complaining about letting immigrants live in the US?

He's white, Mexican immigrants tend not to be.

My parents, not long after they came here from Ireland, were at a party, where they got to listen to someone who had been in the country less than a year complain about how the US should "ship the blacks back to Africa". When it was pointed out to the guy that they had been here a lot longer than him, he didn't get it.

Same thing.

gordonminor: I'll bet if you think about this just as hard as you can (perhaps enlisting some friends to help), you might come up with reasonable reasons why someone would hold those views both in the general case and in specific cases. Really, try to think and try to be honest just as hard as you possibly can.

Re Don Williams

Even better, Dick Cheneys' military record.
