Cheney Versus Whales

30 Apr 2008 04:03 pm

Just to prove that he is, in fact, evil Dick Cheney seems to have decided to launch a secret OVP effort to stop government scientists from helping whale preservation.

This is a classic by Waxman:

"While I appreciate the value of vigorous scientific debate, I question why White House economic advisors are apparently conducting their own research on right whales and why the Vice President's staff is challenging the conclusions of the government's scientific experts."

Next thing you know, Cheney will be proposing that we start whaling again, and that Exxon will use the oil to produce Whale-o-diesel (tm) to solve the energy crunch. I'm sure Cheney's all for drilling for more oil, even if the "drilling" is done with a harpoon.

Maybe Cheney likes to gnaw on a good hunk of whale every now and again. Who are you to deny the ol' boy a bit of blubber??

I wish someone could explain to me how 50% of the voting populace could elect and re-elect (as George W's VP) the political equivalent of Dr. Evil. It's amazing that this guy comes down on the side of being an scumbag on almost every issue....

Because Bush is the embodiment of the American people. When America looks itself in the face, it sees George Bush.

If not for the damage he is doing to the rest of the world, I'd say, make Bush president for life. He is exactly the president we deserve.

Cheney does it just to be an asshole. It's his calling in life.

This episode reminds me of an old "Simpsons" in which Lisa somehow turns Monty Burns into a environmentalist and he immediately puts his new ethic into action by "sweeping the sea clean" of all the messy marine animals and processing them into a biofuel called "Li'l Lisa's Slurry."

In the future Dick Cheney will be spending most of his time in his bunker, gnawing on the organs of slaughtered Iraqi children while swilling Lowenbrau and watching various favorites from his world-class collection of lesbian snuff flicks. And now we know his recliner will be upholstered in whale skin.

He is the perfect Repiglican - a man with no redeeming qualities at all.

Whales are a form of wildlife that many consider harvestable. Japan, Norway and those "stewards to the environment that live in harmony with it" "The Native Peoples" are going back to sustained harvest practices.
All the hippie crap about the "wisdom of the whales" hasn't panned out. They are less intelligent than the average feedlot hog.

Problem with NOAA is that they have scientist-activists that might "know best" about a few whales buying it in ship strikes or fishing nets or the dread "Navy Sub-hunting Sonar" and what draconian restrictions they want to protect their dear critters - but they are ignorant of the economic, security effects on others and in Our System - the concerns of shippers, Naval forces, ferries, pleasure boat operators, fishermen, consumer advocates, port operators have a right to be heard out as well about placing "speed restrictions" and longer work times on vast areas of the ocean and blocking operators from going at optimum cruising speeds.

Brainless worship of the Marine Mammals Protection Act makes little sense as well on rebounding or fully recovered species, especially when we have altered nature such that we no longer have packs of grizzlies wandering around suburbs and settled areas near West Coast streams picking off any sea lions going in streams to pick off most the salmon migration, or packs of Indians hunting - surplus seals that are devestating the West Coast fisheries and the cod industry, now the seals have significantly overpopulated...
If we want the salmon streams to recover, we should be picking off any sea lions in the streams with high-powered rifles and clubbing a lot more baby Harp seals if we want the seal population checked to historical and paleolithic levels, and the Canadian cod fishery to return.

Are the whales interfering with the shark-with-freakin' laser beams on their heads program?

Actually if we want a salmon recovery we will be much more strict with the indians netting salmon beyond their quota.

As it stands, if the tribes take double their quota, their quota is doubled for next year in the hope that they'll stay within it.

Chris Ford, vile scum.

Is there a single issue that Chris Ford has ever managed to be right on? The track record is amazing, even Al has some solid points to make about Hoops.

If Matt had a post about how cute puppies are Chris Ford would show up to say they are actually ugly.

Chris,
Some whale populations may be at levels that could tolerate whaling (minkes, for example). But the N.A. right whale is critically endangered (maybe 300-400 of them left) and they are threatened mainly by two things: floating lobster trawl lines that really don't need to float, and the high speeds of large ships that don't really need to go at top speed all the time. These two threats could be greatly reduced at a negligible cost to the lobster and shipping industries. Cheney is just being an asshole, as usual. And so are you.

All that "wisdom of the whales"

All that? I'd never heard the phrase before and Google returns a staggering 1050 hits.

As for ford's conflation of whales and grizzlies? I swear, you couldn't make this stuff up.

Me, I think Dick's going to morph into Captain Ahab and harpoon an elderly whaling companion in the face. Then, we'll hear about him salting his whaling grounds with dead dolphins.

Chris Ford: "They are less intelligent than the average feedlot hog."

Still makes them smarter than you, Ford.

Not to mention better looking. I suspect they weigh less, too.

The odds that Chris Ford's gonna be suffocated to death at the Venetian via a big, fat, fucking Quasimodo-esque Vegas whale (Japanese) sitting on his face and rotating just went up 1000%. It's practically a sure thing, now. The only question left is whether or not there'll be any organs left to harvest.

You know, the next time someone gets a sit down interview with Dick Cheney - instead of asking the orthodox questions about Iraq and Iran, and, well that about covers it for Bushco talking points - they should ask him offbeat questions like "do you support a return to whaling?". It would be much more revealing. (And it would likely catch him so offguard he'd probably answer truthfully, "of course").

And I see KKKris Ford now encompasses whales into his world Jewish conspiracy. Citing seals and sea lions as the basis for the decline in fish stocks is the scientific equivalent of belief in the perpetual motion machine. Of course, such intellectual acumen should be expected from a guy who sleeps with Mein Kampf under his pillow.

I've never seen anything like these people.

There is a treaty with Canada that goes back to Teddy Roosevelt's administration where an American and a Canadian work together to make sure nothing is built within so many yards of the border to just eliminate the entire issue and to keep the border visible.

Well, this old couple bought a house on the border and built a dog run on the thing and when they got told to move it they found a property rights legal foundation that's friends with Bush and took it to court.

The administration called the American in and told him he had to tell the Canadian to screw off or they would fire him. This post is of the nature where the executive has the power to appoint but not the power to remove but they just did it anyway using their usual legal theories that they can do what they want. They threw out a 100 year old treaty and hired a massive legal team, gave themselves powers that don't exist, and generally had a freak out over a dog run.

These two stories have the same theme: They are like five year olds who just feel compeled to act out when someone tries to tell them what to do. They are Chris Ford writ large: if you told them not to eat the shit sandwich they'd look you in the eye and take a big bite and go "ummmmmmm".

I fully support Dick Cheney and his effort to root out the al-Qaeda cells that have taken root in the skulls of right whales.

I should also say that anyone who is anti-whale must have been anti-toy as a child. Anyone who has had the good fortune to see a whale up close, or - even better, like me - to dive with them, has a renewed sense of awe about the wonder of the world.

It is precisely the view that whales are simply another harvestable resource that will one day see what's left of the human species picking over old Ipods for their edible parts...

Ed is exactly right. I've often wondered how this wasn't used as a tactical advantage by the Dems in 2004.

Seriously. If Kerry had at any point suggested that the powers of the executive branch do not extend to kicking old ladies in the teeth, Bush would have found the first granny strolling down Pennsylvania Ave. and danced all over her face just to show that he could.

In jest of course. Truly, though, these people seem imminently goadable. There's no telling what sort of political toxicity Bush would have spewed in any public appearance/debate if challenged properly.

"It is precisely the view that whales are simply another harvestable resource that will one day see what's left of the human species picking over old Ipods for their edible parts..."

The problem for humans is going to be that we Transhumans don't see humans as useful at all, harvestable or otherwise...

Look at the future represented in "Terminator" - that's you and us. And forget about any "John Connor" saving your asses - that's what we built Cameron for...

[The first paragraph is for real, the second is more of a joke, for those that can't differentiate.]

@ Chris Ford:

God forbid we should listen to marine biologists or other people, with, you know, _advanced degrees_ in the topic at hand.

It's funny how the Right Wing has this weird hostility to expertise, in which an article in Nature or Science bears just as much-evidential weight as the keyboard musings of some neoconfederate, anti-semitic, paranoid loon.

Per Waxman:

The appearance is that the White House rejects the conclusions of its own scientists and peer-reviewed scientific studies because it does not like the policy implications of the data.

Going around NOAA's back to look at the Right Whale issue is an improvement for this Administration. Previously, they've either edited such studies to say what they wanted them to say (paging Mr. Mayer), or stopped funding the research (eg. NASA climate studies and Earth orbiting sensors).

"Actually if we want a salmon recovery we will be much more strict with the indians netting salmon beyond their quota.

As it stands, if the tribes take double their quota, their quota is doubled for next year in the hope that they'll stay within it."

Actually, the biggest problem facing the Pacific salmon population is that water levels in the rivers they use to spawn is being deliberately kept lower than is sustatinable for the salmon, in a giveaway to corporate farming interests.

Chris Ford's tying in of whaling issues with manliness (via the cowardly sensitivities of the hate-America grizzly-loving left) is spot on. In fact, we should remove any barriers to whaling, as long as all whalers carry out their task in a single rowboat equipped with a single hand-held harpoon.

Actually if we want a salmon recovery we will be much more strict with the indians netting salmon beyond their quota.
As it stands, if the tribes take double their quota, their quota is doubled for next year in the hope that they'll stay within it.

You are correct.

The problem is certain people in the Ruling Elites are so inured to "special rights" for poor, oppressed noble native peoples, that getting them to back off quotas that give them 300-500 times the limit on fish other citizens get will be tied up in the courts for another 20 years.
Meanwhile, you have major balance of nature problems emerging from old well-intentioned laws that ALL marine animals and shoreline bird species must be protected with the most extreme of Federal laws. These overpopulations of seals, comorants, herring gulls have no natural predators left to check them and witless animal lovers are so emotionally tied to them that they don't care that they are wiping out other species (piping plovers, puffins, sea-run trout) and tremendously valuable commercial and recreational fisheries on both coasts and the Great Lakes.

Sea lions, fully protected, have exploded in population and now endangered several West Coast streams salmon runs with extinction...and animal lover morons say that is wonderful, because culling excess predators would be "unholy" given they are so cute and such..

And NOAA's own data says that the Right Whale populations are recovering even with ship strikes and would be "better off, recover faster" if 3 things happened - ending (1)NA "traditional right" to hunt that species of whale, (2) banning traditional lobster fishing in the US & Canada and asking 40,000 lobster fishermen to redesign and reinvest making lobster priced outside the most wealthy Elites, or (3) massive messing around with fishing and international trade in new regulatory "prohibitory zones".

Everything is cost=benefit. Is the life of every Harp seal worth "it" ? When their population explosion wipes out 300 year old fisheries?

Re: Actually, the biggest problem facing the Pacific salmon population is that water levels in the rivers they use to spawn is being deliberately kept lower than is sustatinable for the salmon, in a giveaway to corporate farming interests.

Another increasing problem may be that the Pacific salmon gene pool is degenerating because of interbreeding with farmed salmon- the farmed salmon have genotypes that don't do well in the wild.

as for Chris 'The Klansman' Ford, the less said the better. Too bad we didn't leave him behind in Saigon when the city was liberated in 1975. The good old NLF would have taught him a thing or two.

Chris, I'm having a hard time finding your link; perhaps you've mistyped it in favor of one of your other bookmarked cocksucking sites?

Good ol' Chris Ford managed to take the comments section from the merely ridiculous to the hilariously sublime.

Hey, Chris, who's your "feminine side" - Ann Coulter?

Oh, wait...

The vice-president has very strong evidence that the whales have been conspiring with the humanzees against us. He's only fighting to protect us and our security, okay people?

Melville has addressed this.

Chris Ford:

"To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee."

"A man thinks that by mouthing hard words he understands hard things."

Cheney:

"He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it."

"There are some persons in this world, who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them."

Waxman:

"There is sorrow in the world, but goodness too; and goodness that is not greenness, either, no more than sorrow is."

Whales are thought of as majestic, gentle, intelligent creatures. No way Dick Cheney could let that slide.

Pack of whale-worshipping, seal-worshipping cocksuckers.

El Shit takes his inanities from boilerplate off the Daily Kos site to his own unique level of Richard Steven Hack-like stupidity. (Yes officer, this is the address that that evident bank robber wanted the next shipment of money coming to the bank sent to or Tellers would be shot , but I had nothing to do with that!! Security cameras? Duh'oh!!!)

Too young for Vietnam and all the losers of the Left that backstabbed the Vietnamese and Cambodians. Unfortunately, not too young to remember the spectacle of homo Christian Marxist Liberation theologians and the many Hectors that drifted down to Latin America for some good submissive guilt trip, anal cornholing in the late 80s. The Brazilian Embassy had a procession of squealing Hectors complaining that gay Brazilian toughs ravaged them and they wanted to get back to the safety of the USA after each Carnivale. The Hectors were disgusting examples of male Americans...

Chris Ford, noted gender studies expert and Brazillian social historian, unveils the truth about 1980s social movements in Central America: it was all "anal cornholing"; thanks, Chris! We now know whither your predelictions run.

By using this service you agree not to post material that is obscene, harassing, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable.

Ahem.

If liberals and kind-hearted people like whales, then that's all people like Cheney and Chris Ford need to know. Cheney and Chris are both sad twisted people, who really think their "realism" and "toughness" makes them better than normal people. The world these people would create if left to their own devices would be unspeakably ugly - barren and sterile. In fact, it would look a lot like China or Japan - all nature stripped and despoiled and covered in concrete in the name of economic progress. Funny how these so-called defenders of "Western values" like to spit on everything we real Westerners hold dear.
