First HITS Event

23 Apr 2008 03:19 pm

I can tell from my Google Analytics that I actually have readers in the DC area who aren't people I know. Sometimes, I even meet one or two of you out at bars. So if you really do exist out there, reading this blog, you're probably eager to come to the first Heads in the Sand book debate this Friday at noon at the Center for American Progress. Beyond yours truly, some of the key leaders of the most influential new institutions thinking about the future of progressive national security policy -- namely CAP's Brian Katulis, National Security Network's Rand Beers, and the Center for a New American Security's Kurt Campbell -- are going to be on hand to explain why I'm wrong, so it should be a great event.

It'll be podcast, right?

Sounds great, Matt, but would you consider holding a night or weekend event? Some of us have day jobs.

Dude, Friday's a holiday. Arbor Day? Hellooooooo.

Seems like LFP and I are part of the rare Yglesias demographic who work for a living.

And where's O'Hanlon? I can't believe he's not in the line up.

Matt, aren't you going to be at the Borders on 18th in the evening sometime? I thought I saw a sign for it the last time I was there.

Matt (if you read this),

Advice sucks (especially if it is unrequested and/or given through a comment-thing) and I offer this with a great deal of humility.

One thing to think about may be to not be sarcastic in your Bio for the CAP ("Desperately out of touch with the American mainstream..."). I laughed, but I read the blog.

Just a thought.

Good luck on Friday (wish I could go)!

Yes, I'll be doing evening events at the 18th and L Borders and at Politics and Prose in the future.

I too have to work for the man on Friday, but I will try to make it to a signing thingie.

I saw Jonah Goldberg speak at that Borders. I brought a picture of Hillary in a Nazi uniform for him to sign, but didn't actually go through with it. Now I have to live with that regret forever. Don't let my story become yours, Petey!

I would go, but, ya know, I work.

Will there be food? Will it be free? grad students only show up if there is free food.

How about an after-work event in New York?

Another 9-5er, can't make it. I should be there when you do an evening or weekend event.

I, too, would go but work then. (And no, being the lunch hour doesn't help - I work too far out of downtown.) This feels redundant, but I want to help demonstrate the quantity of the potential fans excluded by your sheltered journalistic assumptions.

Matt, are you planning on venturing outside of the big urban areas for any book signings? We here in the Amherst five college area love liberal writers and we have a great local bookstore called the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley, it is right across the street from Mt Holyoke College, you can impress the college women with your big brain.

I would be glad to go just about anywhere, but it's all a question of money. My tour budget from Wiley is $0.00 which makes it hard to do events around the country.

I'll second Jack's motion. Hop on the Acela (or the slower cheaper one) up to New York and we'll come out after work to watch you maul the opposition.

Maybe you should talk to that other
Wylie ;).

Can't go this time, but if you post opportunities like this I will get to one eventually.

I'm not afraid to be an unabashed fanboy - I don't waste much breath on praise, but you are an excellent blogger, and gawking at you from close range would be neat.

Oh, and don't give up plugging your book. People like me love the idea of it and would gladly buy it in theory but haven't actually done it because we lack the budget to buy anything but food and occasional random spending binges based on what store we're in when we've just had it up to here. My chance of buying your book goes up by 5% with every 1000 reminders. Roughly.

When Mr. Yglesias hies himself over to a book store in Northern Virginia, I may turn up to give him a hard time.

Fuck it, I'm going. I work at 14th and G, if you're at 13th and H, I can take a long lunch to make it. Bring books, I'll buy one there.

Matt,

I'm a lurker, and don't comment much at all, but this is worth saying: Since you're in the vicinity of Mr. Jefferson's university, you should seriously consider coming to the University to do a book presentation or what have you. The Miller Center of Public Affairs (my employer) hosts writers for forums every week, and a number of organizations (the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society for example) welcomes speakers.

Again, you should think on it.

Since Matt will probably be hawking a bunch of his books at the event, somebody grab them when he's not looking and ship them to Pyongyang, North Korea.

Is there a book tour scheduled?

Hopefully there will be video/audio from this event.

I live in NYC but am visiting a friend in DC for next 48 hours so I just RSVPed and am looking forward to it.

Hope someone at your publisher knows BookTV..

If the success of the book is really important to you, why don't you spend some of Daddy's money you trust fund scumbag hypocrite?
