Reich on the Race

29 Apr 2008 10:27 am

Here's Robert Reich, former Clinton administration Secretary of Labor, explaining his endorsement of Barack Obama:

Reich, it should be said, started criticizing the Clinton administration from the left in the 1990s so his support for Obama isn't like the turnaround of a die-hard loyalist, but I do think it reflects the judgment of a guy who has a good sense of where the Clintons stand vis-a-vis other possible progressive leaders.

Meanwhile, Robert Reich apparently hasn't bought a new phone since 1973.

I do think it reflects the judgment of a guy who has a good sense of where the Clintons stand vis-a-vis other possible progressive leaders.

Yup. That, and he knows them well enough to know they'd completely fuck up the next 4+ years.

You want to see the youth vote turn away from the Democratic party? Put HRC in the White House. Mission Accomplished.

Reich is an extremely smart liberal. Your side could use more like him.

i wonder if loury still thinks obama isn't black enough to "speak for" the "black community" unlike say, Hillary who he fully supports.

Jay,
Hillary will be black if that's what it takes to win. Obama hasn't shown that level of commitment.

Dang! I'm trying to write a paper and in desperate need of entertainment. You'd think the post with that still at the top of it would get Chris Ford out of the woodwork with something entertaining to say.

Perhaps. But I think it reflects the stand of a guy who loves to get his puss in the press, and the best way to do it is by a man-bites-dog endorsement. How else could he possibly attract as much attention as he has recently?

Gene, as Matt noted:

It's also why Reich left the Clinton cabinet after Bill Clinton's first term. Which makes his endorsement of Obama not the man-bites-dog story you claim it is.

This is hilarious. Matt writes: "I do think it reflects the judgment of a guy who has a good sense of where the Clintons stand vis-a-vis other possible progressive leaders."

This is the same guy who endorsed Bradley over Gore.

What a bunch of hooey Matt.

Armando, back in 2000 it was Gore who ran closer to the center and Bradley who was taking positions to Gore's left. So Matt's not quite so full of hooey as you might think.

I'd recommend listening to the entire podcast. Reich is starry-eyed and Loury is skeptical. All-in-all, a very interesting give-and-take on Obama/Clinton.

This is the same guy who endorsed Bradley over Gore.

He was right then, too.

David W.

That is hooey. Saying Bradley ran to the LEft is sher nonsense. Bradley was thee latest post Partisan Unity Shcitck who did nothing but go negative on Gore.

But I want to know about Reich's so called progressive nose, did it pick out the progressive in the 2000 race? It did not. Not by a long shot.

Matt's point is utter BS.
