Russert Logic

22 Apr 2008 07:54 pm

Russert just said that in a general election, Obama needs to shore up his support with working class white women. Fair enough. He speculated that you might do that by focusing on the economy. Sounds plausible. He then speculated you might do that by picking Mike Bloomberg as VP. So put it all together, and Russert thinks working class white women are looking for . . . New York City's billionaire Jewish mayor? Really?

Did Russert just prove he beat Doug Feith for "Dumbest Fuckin' Guy in the Room" honors?

Hmm. Let me see, I get to choose between listening to the talking heads talk out of their asses or watching AI.

How about we let Matt watch the douchebags so we don't have to?

--> Kathleen Sebelius

Honestly, WTF is up with the media's obsession with Bloomberg? Is it New York-centrism, did he buy them all Happy Meals, or is he really that effective as Mayor?

Please, make the bad man stop.

"Did Russert just prove he beat Doug Feith for "Dumbest Fuckin' Guy in the Room" honors?"

I'm sorry, but I didn't know there was any doubt over just how stupid Russert is.

You underestimate the appeal of short, Jewish billionaire men to working class whites. But I'd expect that from a notorious self-hating antisemite like yourself.

And who knows better what appeals to that demographic than Timmeh -- why he and Big Russ are the very definition of salt of the earth.

That's pretty funny, Matt.

Shiksas love billionaire Jews.

Not what happened, unfortunately. He was discussing the different considerations for selecting a VP candidate: do you focus on appeasing women (Sebelius), on the economy (Bloomberg), on foreign policy (Webb), etc.

This is not to say that Russert is a competent journalist.

If everything is lined up for the Democrats macro wise, why would they put a Republican on the ticket?

Looks like Clinton will win by 3-4. She should drop out now. Of course, she should have dropped out after Wisconsin.

The CNN exit poll shows only 13% of Dems in PA are Black, is that right? Seems like a small number.

A black & a N.Y. Jew. That's a winner.

The good pick is obvious: Jim Webb.

So put it all together, and Russert thinks working class white women are looking for . . . New York City's billionaire Jewish mayor?

Maybe Russert thinks working class white women may vote based on perceived expertise and competence rather than identity politics?

Nah, too crazy.

Now I'm losing respect for Russert. He should have gone for all the marbles and said the war is the big issue, so Obama should pick Lieberman. Or maybe McCain.

Right, why pick Bloomberg when Lieberman is still available? Anyway, why can't we have Warren Buffett?

Actually that's not what he said, Matt. He answered Olbermann's question by agreeing that one option would be for Obama to do something to pick up more support among white women, such as choose Sibelius for VP. He then said another option would be to go for a person who would be identified with economic issues, like Bloomberg. And finally, he said a third option would be to go in the national security direction, by picking someone like Webb.

Noted objective CNN analyst Bill Bennett just said that what Americans are really looking for are answers to questions on Obama about Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright, so this must be the important thing to wonder.

"Did Russert just prove he beat Doug Feith for "Dumbest Fuckin' Guy in the Room" honors?"

It depends ... are they in the same room?

I seem to recall a story about Bloomberg demanding that a pregnant female employee get an abortion.

That must be what Russert likes about the guy.

Damn! Here I was away from Matt's blog for awhile, saw the posting, and was going to point out the Lieberman was the *obvious* choice for Obama's VP...but saw that a couple of other commenters had already beaten me to the punch!

I'm sure that Mayor Mike will be looking for a job in the coming Obama administration, although I doubt he'd be interested in or suited for the Veep spot. If it were me, I'd tap him to head DHS. If any department in the federal government needs a competent administrator to fix it up, it's that one.

El Cid,

As VP, Bill Bennett will gamble America out of her extreme debt.

Either him or Janet Gretzky.

Does Bloomberg have any credibility on economic issues that are relevant to working class women? He's turning NYC into a vacation spot for rich foreigners with unaffordable housing, thousands of middle management types being laid off in the banking debacle.
Maybe Bloomberg could just give every woman a thousand $ for her vote - that economic policy might work!

Barack needs a "politically experienced" VP -- Bloomberg & Webb, both with excellent qualities, don't have that.

Kathleen Sebelius does. She's midwestern, raised in Cincinnati, a woman, 60 yrs old, very politically experienced.

Pencil her in.

Picking Bloomberg is the only way Obama could lose Massachusetts. We hate that guy - he's a turncoat.

did anyone catch Russert on MTP bring up the "pledge of allegiance" issue to Axelrod? Russ didn't know that it was actually the national anthem. He just threw out the right wing lie like it was the truth.

"Russert thinks working class white women are looking for . . . New York City's billionaire Jewish mayor"

Russert figures those women want to marry a New York Jewish billionaire, so they'll vote for him.

Who knows? Maybe he's right. I remember reading a fiction story years ago in which one of the characters was a balding, cigar-smoking, Jewish New Yorker with money, and the point was made that all those Ivy League professional women were perfectly happy to jump into bed with him despite his not being exactly Brad Pitt. So maybe working women are just as susceptible.

Anybody here who is a Jewish New York billionaire who can weigh in?

Personally I like hot Jewish girls like Winona Ryder, Rachel Weisz, and Matt's nemesis Natalie Portman - who got peed on by a dog in New York yesterday.

Dog must have been an anti-Semite. Or maybe it was SLC who thought Portman wasn't kowtowing to Dershowitz enough.

What does Matt have against Mrs. Natalie Portman 55?

Why does Natalie Portman's boyfriend look like a wookie?

I vaguely remember something about Matt complaining that Natalie gets more name recognition than he does or something like that. It was some time ago. So people started referring to Natalie as Matt's nemesis.

I'm irritated that she supports Clinton, but it doesn't surprise me, since she's a Dershowitz protege, so she probably is clueless about the real nature of Israel, despite the fact that she was born there (although she only lived there three years before the family emigrated to the US). So naturally, she supports the AIPAC candidate.

Is there any point at all in parsing what these guys say? By 'these guys' I mean: Russert, Gibson, Cokie Roberts, Donaldson, Stephanopolous, Dowd, Seelye, Fineman, Blitzer, Cohen or Kurtz (I'm sure there's a few more).

They're all highly paid corporate employees whose corporations have decided that these are the best P.R. people to maximize profit. That's why they're all EXACTLY the same.

(I left Matthews off the list purposefully. Why? He's weirder. He hates himself for being rich, he hates the war, he's deeply sexist, and unlike all the others who will of course vote McCain, he'll actually vote for Obama.)

If Obama needs a Jewish guy from NYC to shore up his standinmg on the economy, the obvious choice is Paul Krugman.

Being a rich doesn't mean you know anything about the economy--otherwise, the VP candidate could plausibly be Paris Hilton.

"the VP candidate could plausibly be Paris Hilton."

Well, I think Bloomberg actually got all the lucre through his own efforts, so its a bit different.

That said, what demographics would a dipsomaniac heiress with a habit of exposing her dilapidated crotch appeal to?

Would her rank idiocy help to counter charges of elitism against Obama?

Bush has conclusively proven that elitism is in no way a function of economic or social position, so an idiot may be what we need.

What is the evidence that Obama would be weak among working-class white women in the general election? It is no great surprise that Hillary does better with them than Obama does in the primary, but why -- other than the press worship of St. John -- does anyone think they will turn Republican if Obama is the nominee?

Here's a thought...

One way for Obama to surge with white women is for the Clinton's to get off their ass and campaign for him with their base.
