I'm not sure if you're familiar with the rather silly controversy over whether or not Hillary Clinton said "screw 'em" with regard to white working class southern conservatives at a meeting thirteen years ago (yes, this is the stuff of which controversies are made), but I'd say Theda Skocpol has the definitive take on the matter.

And if that weren't enough, Hillary appears to hold the netroots in contempt as well:

MY: "I'm not sure if you're familiar with the rather silly controversy..."
So silly I will blog about it and link approvingly!
Thanks Instapundit!
Silly because the South (except Florida) will go Republican anyway?
Well, Hillary just said "screw 'em" about MoveOn ,which was CREATED to defend her husband from impeachment when he got his Clenis in a twist. AND she reiterated the Rove disinformation that MoveOn opposed going into Afghanistan.
If that ain't jumping the shark, we're all chum now....
Skocpol quite sensibly doesn't claim to have heard the words "screw 'em", but surely her report makes it pretty clear that Hillary's attitude ( but not Bill's) was in effect the same as actually saying the words.
Skocpol is a joke. What kind of headcase refers to themselves as an "Intellectual-Scholar"?
Scientician was already taken.
the rather silly controversy... that I will be sure to link to and hmmm, where WAS I 13 years ago? I must still have my intellectual-scholarly notes of disapproval somewhere.
Way to go journalist.
It would be considered a silly controversy and I doubt any one backing any candidate would disagree that it was silly if only every other candidate save the one that actually worked the inner cities for the little guy hadn't decided to use their undying love for the little guy as a central part of their campaign.
The hypocrisy of the Clintons is astonishing. With their history it takes some kind of rare chutzpah to try to smear anyone else with elitism, denigrating the regular guy, compassion for anyone outside their power circle, on and on.
Vote hope, not fear.
The funny thing is Mark Penn and Clinton had come to believe the type of white people that are voting for Obama are the future of where the Democratic Party had to go and were planning on directly targeting them. Then they lost them and were only able to keep the type of white people who vote on name recognition and believing her husband will be the one in charge again. Oops.
Also, if you check over at Slate, you'll see that according to a couple of recent polls, around 60% of people in PA agree more with Obama's "bitter" comments than with Clinton's argument against them.
Prediction: Hillary will lose PA or win by less than eight points. Obama will wipe out her delegate win (which will be less than ten delegates) two weeks later.
After which, Gore and Carter will demand she bow out, and/or endorse Obama.
Clinton is toast.
Theda Skocpol? The same Dr. Skocpol who posted a defense of Obama's 'biterly clinging to god and guns' remark and a comment defending his long association with Reverend Wright?
I give Dr. Skocpol credit for checking her notes but
a committed Obama apologist is about the last person I would turn to for insight into the Obama/Clinton race. Can we look forward to a post highlighting Carville's insightful take on Obama's elite and effete nature?
In addition to being a health care advisor to the Clintons back in the 1990s, Theda Skocpol is also the only man or woman to have served as both the president of the American Sociological Association and the American Political Science Association. She is no hack or "Obama apologist." She is no hack, but a very very credible source.
Her academic credentials don't qualify her as non-partisan - she's clearly pro-Obama. That aside, there's nothing definitive about her statement. She says that she has no notes from the meeting and can't remember anything specific that HRC said. All we have is her 2008 recollection of HRC's tone. As Skocpol notes about Barber, "Obviously, contemporaneous notes and a book written years ago, long before today's arguments, are the best possible evidence -- especially since Barber is reportedly now a Hillary Clinton supporter." Sauce for the goose.
It's just another instance demonstrating Clinton's hypocrisy. Bashing Obama about trade, then you have Mark Penn taking money for the Columbia deal. Etc.
Yesterday from the New Republic quote of the day:
“Since Feb. 5, Senator Obama has garnered the support of 80 superdelegates to Senator Clinton’s 5. We’ll let the results of Senator Clinton’s ‘kitchen sink’ strategy speak for themselves.”
--Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan, New York Times
Clinton supporters and Republican trolls: why waster your time?

On Southern working class whites, I believe this to be an accurate portrayal of Hillary's mindset: “Screw ‘em,” [Hillary] told her husband. “You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don’t have to do anything for them.” -Hillary, 1995
That's a good place to begin. Hillary Clinton’s history of lies and unethical behavior goes back farther, and goes much deeper than anyone realizes. Hillary did and does treat all working class Americans as a species apart, and screw them she has: http://theseedsof9-11.com
