Robert Farley notes that just as General Petraeus in Iraq is doubling down on the proposition that backing disparate local armed warlords constitutes a form of "bottom-up reconciliation," military commanders in Afghanistan are moving in the other direction and concluding that in order to build state capacity they need to be more careful about the loyalties of people they work with.

Ah, yes. Because the Afghanistan tactic and the Iraq tactic are the exact same thing in the exact same place and therefore we should treat them exactly the same. Oh, right...

Meanwhile, it's funny when coopting the local populace - conthing COIN strategy is all about - is frowned on by the likes of Matthew. It's like he doesn't understand COIN at all.

PS - I always get my Afghanistan local military unit training news from Wired. It's certianly the best source for that type of thing.

Al, I suggest you start reading Asia Times. Their Afghanistan and Pakistan coverage is considerably better.

That is, if a moron like you can read, which I doubt.

If Matt would read the stuff from them I send him every night, he might not actually be totally clueless about both countries and the situations there.
