George Voinovich seems really pissed off! I'm not entirely sure exactly what he's saying we should do in Iraq, but there is something nice about seeing someone -- a Republican no less -- expressing some frustration with the situation. Now just as I'm typing, he kind of seems to be saying he would favor setting a deadline for withdrawal, but I'm not really sure.

Yglesias!
Matthew Yglesias seems really excited! I'm not entirely sure exactly what he's excited about, but there is something nice about seeing someone -- a blogger no less -- expressing some interest in politics. Now just as I'm typing, he kind of seems to be saying he's excited about something a politician said on TV, but I'm not really sure what it was.
Voinovich is one of those Republicans who always tease the public/media with outrage over the failures in the war but quickly beat a retreat to the safety of the GOP caucus as soon as legislation is before them. Listening to him make good, solid points that he will summarily ignore is extremely frustrating.
In Voinovich's defense, he did effectively derail Bolton's fast-track confirmation at a crucial moment in the committee hearings.
Then again, at an equally crucial moment, he voted to allow Bolton's nomination to go to the floor rather than voting against it in committee. However, his action gave the Dems cover to block his confirmation. One can't expect him to actually do anything, because his party will kneecap him behind closed doors, but he can create an opportunity for the Dems to do the right thing.
Like Lugar, Voinovich is another GOP eunuch.

The most ignorantly unproductive snark I've read in awhile.
Voinovich recently gave a talk in Ohio and said essentially, "Of course we're going to have to raise taxes. Our debt and deficit problems are too deep."
Yes, he sometimes caves after showing back bone but that's better than those who never show any back bone.
I enjoyed his "We have someone sitting across here, maybe the next president of the United States," comment about BHO. Not a very Republican thing to say.
Voinovich is the Ohio Republican who did not go to jail, but I strongly suspect that it is because he is too confused to be trusted with serious corruption by his cronies.
Political survival insticts temporarily (briefly?) kicking in? Voinovich watched his supposedly safe colleague in the Senate go down in the flames of a massive defeat last year, and he watched the Democrats crush the Republicans in taking over most of the statewide offices including governor. This year should see at least 2-3 House seats switch from R to D.
Voinovich has always been one of the vaguely decent Republicans, I think. You can't be too right wing if you're tha Mayor of Cleveland, for one thing.

No, it's because he learned his lesson after awarding contracts to his brother in Cleveland. Lesson learned; not enough damage done to his reputation to prevent him from becoming governor and senator.
As an Ohioan I am SO FUCKING sick and tired of Voinovich's act. He always talks a good game and always delivers precisely nothing when the chips are down.
Yea, my snark was dipped in weak sauce. Is there a such thing as a productive snark, though?

Your original comment brought a smile to my face. Yes, there is indeed such a thing as productive snark: a brief "flick of the crop," if you will, to keep the "horse of commentary" on the "trail of on-topic-ness" and out of the "wilderness of self-indulgence."
Steve LaBonne @ 7pm:
your absolutely right. i remember quite awhile ago he said that "feathers were going to fly" and that iraq was "f#*ked up".
And yet when i wrote to him and asked him to, you know, ACT on those feelings...well nothing happened.
I would like to take the time to thank ***mixedfriends.com*** for the wonderful service they have provided. I met my husband through the site 1 year ago, we were two people of different cultures and countries. Yet, because of this great website we were brought together after finding love. Maybe you will love it.
Voinivich was one of several Republicans who made some half-way decent, semi-good points today.
Not that the same Senators will actually do anything to change the status-quo when it comes to voting...

Of course, it mocks things that need to be mocked, and don't deserve argument. 8 of Matt's 12 previous posts had been directly on politics though, so the mockery was just really stupid.

Don't tell me you had doubts about Voinovich!
