Back to work already?

26 May 2008 10:48 pm

[Alyssa]

I second Isaac's thanks to Matt, and extend my gratitude to him for taking over basketball coverage for the week. Now I don't feel guilty about throwing a little baseball into the mix. But before I get all serious, I thought I'd wave goodbye to the hour left in the long weekend and welcome summer in with a few thoughts on summer jams.

Far be it from me to defend Will Smith’s rap career. My own tastes run a little more towards the Dirty South and a little less towards “Welcome to Miami.” But New York’s Vulture blog is running a search for the best new song of the summer, and none of the entrants so far are particularly...summery. Is there actually a better song about June, July and August than “Summertime”?

I’ve racked my brain and my iTunes playlist. And while “Summer of ‘69” and “The Boys of Summer” capture individual summer romances, and the entire early Beach Boys catalog is the best possible homage to surfing and driving, the former are kind of well…angsty, and the latter are more than a little dated. But no matter how passé Will Smith’s shorts and flattop are, I can’t imagine a time when firing up a grill and hanging out in the sunshine wouldn’t be more fun than, say, coming back to work after a holiday weekend.

If you need to procrastinate while you recover on Tuesday morning, throw your favorite summer songs in the comments and I'll put up a Muxtape of the most-mentioned ones at the end of the week.

Just off the top of my head, better songs with "summertime" the title:

-Summertime in the City, Planet Asia.
-For you non hip-hop heads, all versions of the "Summertime" standard, from Ella all the way up to sublime.

Anything from Jimmy Buffett or Bob Marley.

Led Zepplin Down by the Seaside

The Lovin' Spoonful, Summer in the City ("Hot town, summer in the city...")

Bob Dylan, Summer Days ("She says, 'You can't repeat the past.' I say, 'You can't? What do you mean, you can't? Of course you can.'" A great line stolen from a great American novel...)

Chad & Jeremy, A Summer Song ("Soft kisses on a summer's day, laughing all our cares away...")

The Flaming Lips, It's Summertime ("It's summertime - and I can understand if you still feel - sad")

"The Sign" - by Ace of Base- is great regardless of the season.

"Hot Fun in the Summertime"?

"Fourth of July," by X, maybe. True to the X-thestic it's not particularly lighthearted, though.

"Here Comes The Summer," Undertones
"Summer Is Ready When You Are," (I think that's the title...is it actually called "Saints?") Breeders
"Summer," Anna Domino
"Sumer Is Icumin In," various artists, 1000 AD-present.
"It Must Be Summer," Fountains Of Wayne.

Cut Copy - Unforgettable Season

Tunes I'll probably listen to more than once this summer:

+ "Summer Single" (by John Wesley Harding)
+ "Faster & Llouder" (Foster & Lloyd)
+ "Too Drunk to Fuck" (Dead Kennedys)
+ "Walkin' Around in NYC" (Marshall Crenshaw)
+ "Ridin' in my Car" (NRBQ)

Most are probably a stretch to be termed "Summer Singles."

"Summer Time" War
"Hot Fun in the Summertime" Sly and the Family Stone

"Summer Is Ready When You Are," (I think that's the title...is it actually called "Saints?")--Breeders

UP!!!

I am resolutely uncool, I know, but Smooth by Santana means summer to me.

Dancing in the Streets by Martha & the Vandellas

great hip hop from mpls: Sunshine by Atmosphere

Donna Summer, naturally.

Backstreets - Bruce Springsteen

Growing up in San Diego, the relevant "Summertime" for me is by Sublime.

That and maybe some Jack Johnson.

Pavement- Summer Babe. Clearly.

Couple of obvious ones:
Summertime Blues - Eddie "The Man" Cochran
Grazin in the Grass - Hugh "The Dude" Masekela

Big props to Christopher M for resurrecting Chad & Jeremy (best named duo ever!)

I'd like to second "Summertime" by Sublime, and add "Summer Jam" by The Underdog Project. Both have that laid back, laconic sort of feel that's perfect for the hot lazy weather...

Sure it's dated, so am I: Pavement's Summer Babe.

Oh, almost forgot these gems:

Itchykoo Park - The Small Faces
("It's all so beautiful" who wouldn't want to go there on a hot summer day?}

Long Hot Summer - Style Council (especially the 7-minute "Club Mix")

L'Amour a la Plage - Niagara

XTC's "Skylarking" starts off with "Summer's Cauldron" (which starts off with 30 seconds of summer insect sounds, just to set the mood,) and keeps pretty damn summery from there on out...esp. if you replace "Dear God" with "Mermaid Smiled", as was the original intent. Probably my favorite summer album, although any given Archies album works pretty well too.

The Sundaes - "Summertime"

The Sundays - "Summertime"

if you like muxtape, you may want to try putting a mix up on mixwit. no uploads and you can embed it on your blog.

Oh, and 1 more vote for doin' time by sublime =)

Uh, is this still the Atlantic? Or did I take a wrong turn somewhere?

Wilco - "Summer Teeth" from "Summerteeth"
Yo La Tengo - "Season of the Shark" from "Summer Sun"
The Beatles - "Good Day Sunshine" from "Revolver"

"Summer Wasting" by Belle and Sebastian

Obligatory Corrs post.

"Summer Sunshine". by the Corrs.

Magnetic fields have a bunch of sumemr songs, just to take a few of the first songs of the Holiday album:

Desert Island
Deep Sea Diving Suit
Strange Powers

100.000 Fireflies

Tons of songs with a summer vibe!

Girls in Their Summer Clothes, Bruce Springsteen, Magic album

This one's easy - "Celebrated Summer" by Hüsker Dü.

"Summer Wasting" by Belle and Sebastian

I was totally thinking about this song too, but you can't really listen to it before August. Also, I couldn't remember the name.

BTW, looking through this thread, 1 AM, end of the weekend, seeing all this 90s indie rock--anybody else feel like they're watching 120 Minutes?

Summer Nights from Grease. Granted not a full "rock" song, but c'mon.

Tell me more, tell me more, like does he have a car?

"Under the Boardwalk" by the Drifters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZabCT1CndQc&feature=related

"Under the Boardwalk" by the Drifters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZabCT1CndQc&feature=related

"Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts
"How Bizarre" by O.M.C. (I know the name doesn't exactly scream out "summer!" but it's definitely a summer song.)
"The Weather Is Here (I Wish You Were Beautiful)" by Jimmy Buffett

Re "Grazing in the Grass," I'd go for the Friends of Distinction version.

can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet: the kinks - sunny afternoon

the Ramones: Rockaway Beach

"Don't Fear the Reaper." Cowbell optional.

September! - always reminds me of a cheesy open air disco at Lake Garda in summertime.

Lily Allen - "LDN"

Summer also is a good time for slightly exotic stuff - these were all huge hits in Europe:

Yeke Yeke by Mory Kante
Im Nin'Alu by Ofra Haza
Lambada

Lots of options:

Mungo Jerry ::: In The Summertime
U2 ::: Indian Summer Sky
London Symphony Orchestra ::: Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dream
Simple Minds ::: Someone Somewhere in Summertime
Frank Sinatra ::: Something Wonderful Happens In Summer
Seals & Crofts ::: Summer Breeze
American Football ::: Summer Ends
Alphaville ::: Summer In Berlin
The Lovin' Spoonful ::: Summer In The City
Van Halen ::: Summer Nights
John Travolta & Olivia Newton ::: Summer Nights
The Decemberists ::: Summersong
John Coltrane ::: Summertime
The Samples ::: Summertime
Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince ::: Summertime
Alan Jackson ::: Summertime Blues
Nat King Cole ::: That Sunday, That Summer
Don Henley ::: The Boys Of Summer
Percy Faith ::: Theme From A Summer Place
Led Zeppelin ::: White Summer - Black Mountain Side

Katrina & The Waves ::: Walking on Sunshine
Don Henley ::: Sunset Grill
The Beatles ::: Sun King
Terry Jacks ::: Seasons in the Sun
LEN ::: Steal My Sunshine
Sheryl Crow ::: Soak Up The Sun
Smash Mouth ::: Walkin on the Sun

I agree with others on:

The Beatles ::: Good Day Sunshine
Santana ::: Smooth
The Drifters ::: Under the Boardwalk
OMC ::: How Bizarre
and almost anything by Buffet

But for me Jessee @ 1:11 nailed it: XTC's "Summer's Cauldron" captures the quintessential summer feeling.

The Chills - Double Summer

Two discs (yeah still the way to go) I love for the summer:

G love and special sauce- yeah it's that easy

Broken social scene- you forgot it in people

"The Way" by Fastball

I'll second:

"Dancing in the Streets" by Martha & the Vandellas
"Summer Nights" from the Grease soundtrack
"Under the Boardwalk" by the Drifters

Here's another vote for "Sunny Afternoon" by the Kinks, of course!

Austin's Fastball produced the best summer song in a very long time.

And Austin's Christopher Cross' 'Sailing' owned the airwaves in the summer of '81. And yeah, it was pretty sappy, but I heard it every half hour on a trip I took back east.

But 1965's 'Satisfaction' by the Stones is the greatest summer song of all time. There is no question. And, no, 'summer' does not have to be in the title to be a summer song.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the greatest summer song of all time (if not the greatest song ever, period) -- Justin Timberlake's "Summer Love," which was last year's big summer hit.

I guess the people here don't like good music.

People who have never heard of "Porgy And Bess" should make no comment about songs about Summertime.

A fresh little gem of a recommendation that celebrates the arrival of summer with a timeless sound, and that has yet to be mentioned:

"Summertime" by Josh Rouse, from his 'Subtitulo' album

I love listening to this song, especially this time of year, when we're finally on the cusp of summer...

I do like Will Smith's "Summertime," but I have to say the early Beach Boys catalogue still seems relevant to me, at least in mood if not in lyrical content. The complete works of Antônio Carlos Jobim (one of the inventors of bossa nova, for those unfamiliar) should probably be in here somewhere too. And for some reason I always associate the Pixies' "Debaser" with beautiful sunny weather, although the specific event I'm thinking of is actually arriving in Berkeley, CA in February.

"Breezin'" by George Benson says summer afternoon to me.

And in another mood, Springsteen's "Sherry Darling" .
