Daschle on Health Care

15 May 2008 09:03 am

Interesting conversation between Tom Daschle and Ezra Klein about health care. Daschle, of course, was one of the earliest major figures to endorse Obama and there are a lot of ex-Daschleites on Obama's staff, up to and including Obama's chief of staff in the Senate. Daschle's take on health care policy is, meanwhile, somewhat sounder than what Obama's put forward during the campaign (though Obama's plan is good on its own merits) so I hope the rumors that he may play a major role in an Obama administration (chief of staff is what people are saying around town) are true in this regard.

Of course, this doesn't matter because Tom Daschle and Ezra Klein are both scumbags, and the lowest circle of hell is reserved for them.

Tom Daschle looks like Buzz Bisinger.

Even though it's an incredibly powerful position, and he'd probably be pretty good at it, I can't really see Daschle taking on the COS role. Going from Senate Minority Leader to White House Chief of Staff still seems like a demotion.

Howard Baker was Reagan's Chief of Staff from '87-'88, after serving as Senate Majority Leader.

I think the first two people who posted are really sad.

This is an opportunity to express/exchange ideas. Why would you behave so badly?

It's embarassing for you and an indication of the problem with our educational system in this country.

Mr. Ambinder, I can see why you don't always allow for comments. It's like dealing with preschoolers (I mean no disrespect to all the preschoolers out there).

I met Tom Daschle back when he came to the Augustana College (Sioux Falls) Political Science Honor Society breakfast in the spring of 1982. He was a young Congressman, and we thought gee, this guy might go places. He's been one of the "minds" behind the Obama campaign, and frankly, I think he's led a Democratic revolt against Clinton control of the party. Chief of staff is a powerful role, especially for someone like Daschle, who prefers real power to adulation. He will have some role. And make no mistake, a win for Obama would be a win for Daschle, he's as important as anybody for Obama being where is now.

Tom Daschle is the right person to be Obama’s Chief of Staff during his first term in office in order to avoid the mistakes made by Clinton in his first term by bringing new hands from Arkansas. Tom will give Obama’s administration steady hand and most especially acting as liaison between the administration and the legislative branch.
