If You Build It...

Despite a hefty and unfortunate fare increase, Metro ridership is way up in recent months. It's almost as if when regions invest in creating reasonable alternatives to driving, commuters are able to adapt to increased fuel prices by switching their travel patterns around. Some might say further such investments would be a good idea.

Having done the D.C. and NYC areas on business, I find that it's worth (if need be) more to me than the cost of gasoline to take a pass on the heroic rush hour(s) traffic and hop on one of the transit systems.

About the only other way I've found to avoid stewing in hydrocarbons in Washington was to find a room in the District and follow - say - Pennsylvania to/from the beltway against traffic. I found it great fun when I could swing it.

However, if I were a resident, there's no way I could afford the coin for anything in the District that my wife would find acceptable, which puts me back on the transit systems.
