what cmholm said! the book argues that early on that the non-wasp, non-elite, non-patrician nixon
realized there were way more "just folks" than "elites." and he realized that they, just like him, resented their "betters" and he tapped into the resentment.

The Economist also reviews the book, suggesting that Nixon enjoyed support not despite his rage and ugliness, but because of it.
Sort of like the GOP supporters today who are perfectly happy with the likes of John Hagee or Fawell talking stink about the US, because they agree with their biases.
