Pandas

Apparently the recent earthquake in China also did damage to the Wolong Panda Reserve, and rescue efforts are under way.

I was supposed to go to Wolong in July. Sigh. I wanted nothing more than to frolic with the Pandas.

OK, I confess this is a comparably trivial consequence of the catastrophe.

The pandas sleep all the time, especially when it's hot. The wife and I were there in July 2006, and we didn't see 1 panda active, no hyperbole.

Also, because they're endangered and you're germy, you can't even get closer to them than a few feet.

The media in Shanghai is reporting that damage to to the preserve has been serious, but that no pandas or panda-keepers (pandologists?) have been killed. Apparently two pandas wandered off when their enclosure collapsed- no word on their return as yet. The military is helicoptering in supplies and bamboo until transportation routes can be opened. Death toll was up to 61,000 last night.
