Parsley

23 May 2008 10:13 am

John McCain, who didn't mind Rod Parsley being a bigot when only smallish liberal publications were complaining about it, is now eager to ditch the man since the story's hit the MSM. McCain, it seems, still regards the reporters at major news organizations rather than the conservative rank-and-file as his real base.

Maverick!

McCain is increasingly being revealed as a very mediocre candidate. Giddyup on that.

He won the Republican nomination. He doesn't need these jokers anymore.

Another one thrown under the crushing wheels of the Straight-Talk Express. Can't wait until he throws Dobson and Robertson from the train.

It's like watching a dying fish on deck - flip flop flip flop.

McCain, it seems, still regards the reporters at major news organizations...as his real base.

It's worked for him this far.

What's wrong with Parsley? What's wrong with fighting terrorists?

I guess plenty if you back guy name Hussein!

What's wrong with Parsley?

Depends. If you believe that all Muslims are violent terrorists and they must all either be converted or die, he's your boy. He sure sounds like the spiritual guide for Ann Coulter.

From Matt's link:

Sen. John McCain rejected the endorsement of a second controversial pastor Thursday, saying there is no place for the Rev. Rod Parsley’s comments about Islam.

"I believe there is no place for that kind of dialogue in America, and I believe that even though he endorsed me, and I didn't endorse him, the fact is that I repudiate such talk, and I reject his endorsement," McCain said in a statement.

Bolding mine.

But McCain had called Parsley "one of the truly great leaders in America, a moral compass, a spiritual guide," which certainly sounds like an endorsement to me.

Straight talk!

It's unexpected, but it's funny. It's a rare glimpse at how the most extreme conservative people, the ones who have been influencing our country so much of late (represented by Parsley), do not really match up with the slightly-less conservative ones who had been carrying the conservative banner beforehand (represented by McCain), and can be rejected by them.

The rejection, make no mistake, has everything to do with McCain's self-interest in the election, and nothing to do with really being disgusted with what Parsley and Hagee said, I'm certain.

Well, to clarify, if McCain's less conservative than the Hagees and Parsleys of the world, it's only because he doesn't stand on the social issues with such an insane fervor. In light of, for example, his opposition to making MLK Jr.'s birthday a holiday, I doubt though that McCain would give a flying fig if the far-right base accomplished all their social goals, including re-establishing racial segregation, or something worse.

Here is a video that shows McCain kissing Parsley's ass intermingled with Parsley's rants. The final Parsley quotes are scary:

"We were built for the battle. We were created for the conflict. We get off on warfare."

If this is a man that McCain called a "spiritual guide", is it any wonder he wants to "bomb, bomb, bomb, ... bomb, bomb Iran?"

So McCain is going around rejecting Hagee, Parsley, and presumably others, by saying that it's not as bad as Obama/Wright because he didn't have a 20 year relationship with them. But everyone knew when he was courting their endorsements that they were batshit crazy, so isn't that worse? Would you rather have a president who had an accepted pastor who turned a crazy (but was generally seen as a good guy for most of the 20 years, see Wright's involvement with the Clinton's in the 90's) or one who openly courted multiple crazy bastards, but then rejected them the moment he was called on it? Sounds pretty easy to me. McCain is one opportunistic bastard, it's a good thing he's not better at it...

Bob Oso: Can't wait until he throws Dobson and Robertson from the train.

Dobson didn't endorse McCain and has in fact forsworn voting for him. Robertson endorsed Giuliani early on and presumably now backs McCain, though he's been quiet about it.

Why so long to dump Parsley and Hagee? Simple. There are only two third rails of bigotry in America: racism and anti-Semitism. If George Allen had kept his comments limited to gays and/or Catholics, he'd probably still be Senator today.

I'm not defending bigots. It just fascinates me that Bob Jones University and Hagee and Dobson et.al. can go off on certain groups and everyone rolls their eyes but does nothing, and then they're SHOCKED, SHOCKED I tell you, when something like the macaca incident happens.

Do people not realize that most bigotry is 100% equal opportunity? Like Parsley is going to be that guy who is anti-Muslim but thinks black people are TERRIFIC??? Or that Hagee hates the Papists but is going to have a deep, abiding love for the children of Abraham? Give me a break. This crap hitting the fan was inevitable (just like Wright was for Obama).

Neither did Obama distance himself from Wright until it became a media stink, although Wright became a media stink much more quickly.

I dream of the day when politicians stop courting preachers.

Re: I doubt though that McCain would give a flying fig if the far-right base accomplished all their social goals, including re-establishing racial segregation, or something worse.

Is there any evidence that the Religious Right desires a return to segregation and Jim Crow? Lord knows I despise that crowd, but I don't think it's fair to tar them with positions they do not in fact hold.

Dustin,

Point well taken. Dobson initially stated he would not vote for McCain but has recently said he would vote in the 2008 election. I suspect that in the fall he will announce that he has "prayed about it" and God led him to vote for McCain because he is the best choice considering the field. As far as Roberston goes, who knows.

What's wrong with Parsley? nothing. i suggest you look up a recipe for chimichurri and have it with the grilled steak this weekend. delish

right

Barak Obama, who didn't mind Rev. Wright being a bigot when only smallish conservative blogs were complaining about it, is now eager to ditch the man since the story's hit the MSM. This is exactly right, and it was the point of making a big deal of Parsley/Hagee. Make him choose Joe Klein over the local pastor, and see how many evangelicals just happen not to turn out come November.
