Baby Mama

12 Jun 2008 08:58 am

Fox News follows up its speculations about Barack Obama's "terrorist fist-jab" with an item on Michelle Obama, who's now a "baby mama" it seems.

Two babies, in fact, if memory serves.

For purposes of equal time I feel obliged to point out that Cindy McCain is a HOMEWRECKING WHORE.

I blame Tina Fey.

Does this mean Fox News saving the "ghetto queen" banner for the democratic convention?

A couple of months back Colbert had a bit in which he tried to start the rumor that Obama had fathered a black child. He was then shocked to be told his rumor was actually true and that the mother's name was Michelle Obama. It appears that FOX news has decided to run with that rumor.

It must be hard for Colbert to find ways to distinguish himself from Fox news.

I'm sure Fox News was merely trying to point out the fact that Barack Obama has actually only married and fathered children with one woman, which is considered out of fashion amongst some leading-light Republicans. It's hard to imagine what else this could have meant.

See? Even when Fox praises the Obamas, sensitive liberals get all upset.

Damn. The Atlantic servers finally got me.

Now, now. Cindy McCain is a homewrecking corrupt drug addict, not a "whore." Get it straight.

Wow... just breathtaking.

The Obama campaign needs to get Michelle out there fast and let people really get to know her to head off all this caracaturing. She's an extremely impressive woman.

Fox would say the same about a white politician's wife, right? Right?

By the way, I believe the term "baby mama" is used to refer to a woman who had your child but isn't your wife (or maybe not even girlfriend).

I really hope Fox News is flooded with complaints over this.

Democrats/Progressives, etc need to be as agressive as the far right wing has been these last several years in making their complaints known.

Too many in the media have been intimidated by the far right. It's time to fight back.

This has to be offending more people than it's convincing, right?

Right?

The really ironic part, if you watch the clip, is that Malkin is saying something along the lines of "as long as the press sticks to what Michelle Obama says on the stump and doesn't get personal there won't be a backlash," while this crawler flashes on the screen. Sounds like a decent thing to say, but it is completely undercut by the caption.

And neither Fox nor Malkin, who defends the insult on her web this morning, notice the contradiction.

Clueless.

This is grasping at straws. Michelle has introduced Barack as her "baby daddy" at several campaign stops, although admittedly not in the last few months.

Give yourselves credit, though. You're all getting much better at expressing the "faux outrage" that people like Michelle Malkin have perfected.

you knew it was only a matter of time before this happened, folks.

i won't hold my breath waiting for gloria steinem, linda hirschmann or any the feminist establishment to defend michelle obama or speak out against the rabid sexism this woman has endured. they don't consider michelle as one of them.

wonder why...

I know this is an unworkable solution but I'd love to see it tried. Obama takes Ailes into a private meeting, no staff, no witnesses and with the agreed upon rules anything said is to remain private and if that promise is broken all will be denied. He rolls the terrorist fist jab clip, the Obama Mama clip. He then tell Ailes this is unacceptable and to be avoided in the future. If he's incapable of civil coverage all members of the administration will be precluded from appearing on any Fox program, giving interviews to any Fox personnel and Fox will not have a place in the White House press room. And Ailes is to start off on the right foot by banning Malkin from any Fox facilities henceforth.

This is grasping at straws. Michelle has introduced Barack as her "baby daddy" at several campaign stops - mike

When someone is speaking, they can use things like "tone of voice" to indicate whether they are being sarcastic, subversive of stereotypes, etc. When there is a news crawl, it has no tone of voice (and is too short to really have even literary tone).

I betcha they even have robots that can understand this distinction, nowadays.

This is grasping at straws. Michelle has introduced Barack as her "baby daddy" at several campaign stops, although admittedly not in the last few months.

Your link is broken.

Uh huh. I'm sure that's why Fox is using "Baby Mama". I mean, what other explanation could there be for a network which prides itself on being "Fair and Balanced". They're just paraphrasing Michelle!!! Nothing to see here!!!

Asshole.

If I'm Obama then I'm THRILLED with the right's announced plans to try and go after/demonize Michelle Obama.

How in the world is this going to help McCain's efforts to bring disaffected Hillary supporters into his camp? Instead, this will have the opposite effect. It will help bring women back home to the Democratic nominee.

Women will remember how Republicans demonized Senator Clinton during her husband's administration and that will remind them that Senator Obama is not that bad a choice after all. By all means, Fox/McCain/etc. try and go after Senator Obama's wife instead of Senator Obama himself.

I think it's great. You have the 'bump', which anyone still with their own hips recognizes, being interpreted as a 'terrorist' gesture, then this about the least likely candidate for that phrase.

Fox is both making itself beyond parody, and throwing up such patent nonsense about Obama that if a genuine concern does come up, it will be almost impossible to distinguish. The fox that cried wolf.

Incidentally, on its own merits, it was as racially subtle as Ross and his welfare duchess.

And it's nice the rabid right is outraged by peoples outrage on this. How can you be so upset that finally the left has learned the lessons you taught them so well and for so long.

No, I don't agree with it. But for so long the center and the center-left actually debate things, thinking they are being 'fair and balanced', and the right laughs at their naivity, then swift-boats someone else.

mike:

Keep digging.

If you don't understand that it's one thing for Michelle Obama to make a crack about her husband, and quite another for Faux News and its claque of sniggering racist lackeys to run a chiron evoking ghetto culture, then I want to give you a big, big mic and let you go on and on.

More power to Fox News! Don't say nuthin' folks! Let them have their say!

I assume CNN is good enough?

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0411/02/se.06.html

Here's a relevant piece from Baby Daddy's 2004 Senate victory speech, from the link, about 1/3 down:

MICHELLE OBAMA, WIFE OF BARACK OBAMA: My baby's daddy Barack Obama. Yeah!

BARACK OBAMA, SENATOR-ELECT, ILLINOIS: Thank you, Illinois. Thank you. Thank you, Illinois. I don't know about you but I'm still fired up. I am fired up. Look at this crowd. Thank you, Illinois.

You guys can hate on the facts, but they're still the facts.

This is grasping at straws. Michelle has introduced Barack as her "baby daddy" at several campaign stops, although admittedly not in the last few months.

Cite, please.

I've seen a CNN transcript of Michelle saying, "my baby's daddy." Not the same thing.

Ah, the old "it's only racist when white people on Fox News say it" card. Compelling.

Go, mike, go! You're so right on, dude! Lay it on us, baby! Love it!

Mike:
Does that mean that MSNBC and CNN can start calling McCain's wife a c*nt now and not face right wing outrage.

After all. McCain has called her that so it is open season, right?

Mike,
You're really proving yourself to be quite stupid. Well, I heard McCain called his wife a 'cunt,' so I guess we'll soon be seeing a new MSNBC headline...

"John McCain says lay off the cunt!!"

I'm sorry, is someone really trying to defend a news organization calling a married, ivy league educated, black woman a "baby momma." Seriously? What's wrong with a decent apology. It was an unbelievably stupid headline. And not even close to subtle.

So, if I can find a clip of someone close to Obama proclaiming "That nigger's got game!" Fox can commence to pepper their election coverage with the "N" word when referencing Obama? All because someone else did it first? Welcome to kindergarten koverage, kourtesy Mikey.

adolphus - can you link to a transcript? I don't care what they call her as I'm not a McCain supprter. Regardless, of course the right will be able to manufacture as much outrage as the commenters in this post. They're generally much better at faux outrage than the left, although the commenters here are no slackers in that area.

"OMG!!!1 Faux News is so racist! They practically burned a cross on TV! OMG!!! WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Obamas are so oppressed they'll need to get Denzel to play Barack in a movie soon!!"

DAS and elle loco, you have a good point, but a more important one is that mike has presented zero evidence that Michelle Obama ever said "baby daddy" in the first place.

Also, considering that the Obamas have two daughters, I think the CNN transcript is wrong and should read "babies' daddy".

"terrorist fist-jab" ranks up there with "freedom fries." America, Fuck Yeah!

Don't you see the fist-bump in sports all the time? Especially baseball, like after a guy hits a home-run and crosses home plate and fist-bumps a runner who he drove in? So unAmerican.

Still, my favorite Fox moment was the Lincoln-Frederick Douglass debates.

Actually, what I have seen is Michelle referring to Barack as "my babies' daddy". I know this is going to be a bit subtle for the Fox News/Malkin crowd, but Michelle's line isn't the same thing as calling Barack a "baby daddy". Sort of like that "people of color" versus "colored people" thing.

But politically, it doesn't really matter. This stuff is not going to play well among moderate white suburbanites who think of themselves as "color blind".

Mike,
I'm sorry, I don't really see people outraged on here. I see a lot of people that don't seem very surprised at such a stupid headline from Fox. The only people that might seem a little angry are the ones responding to your dumbass. And that's only because you sound so dumb. You can't see how its a bit ridiculous for a news organization to use a headline like this? Really?

Malkin says MO called BO her "baby daddy," then provides a transcript, which says "my baby's daddy." I do not pretend to be a slang maven but I don't think this is the same thing at all. Is it? If it isn't, Malkin's defense is a flat-out lie.

"My baby's daddy" is a descriptive phrase, not in standard use. It means what it says.

"Baby mamma" is an established phrase that means "woman who has given birth to someone's child out of wedlock." It has pejorative racial and class connotations.

These are not equivalent. In terms of connotation, they are different roughly as "Negro" and "n*gger" are different, though not to the same degree.

The link people are using to "prove" that Michelle referred to Barack as her "baby daddy" is a public web forum dedicated to John McCain. And it doesn't quote Michelle, just a bunch of racist McCain supporters.

"My baby's daddy," which obviously could have and should have been transcribed as "my babies' daddy", is not the same thing as "my baby daddy".

Mike, you're a cunt.

It's not fair to call Mike a cunt. I doubt he's ever seen one, so how can he possibly defend himself?

Can skeptics finally stipulate that Obama is "black enough" now? Because any other Democratic candidate could be subjected to those other Foxisms, but a white candidate was never going to hear this one. The arguments about whether he could get a cab or not are interesting in theory, but this is some concrete evidence that people who are inclined to treat people differently by race (ahem, euphemism intended), see him not as biracial or the child of an immigrant, but simply as "black".

The term means an unmarried mother. That mother's children are bastard children.

Imagine if MSNBC had referred to Laura as a "W's baby mama."

Imagine if CBS had referred to Barbara as "Bush's baby mama."

Imagine if ABC had referred to Nancy as "Reagan's baby mama."

FoxNews's use of the term is indecent in every sense of the word. It is racist, sexist, ageist. Those who defend its use are in the same boat.

For the life of me, I just cannot figure out why the GOP cannot convince African Americans and Latinos to vote Republican?

Oh yeah - maybe that's why!

Hey, FoxNews, great way to get all of those white women to vote for McCain! You know, the ones that look at a candidate's treatment of minorities to see whether or not they are compassionate. Real smooth.

Mike, you're a cunt.

Well, you can both go home with nice smug smiles today now that you've fulfilled your liberal duty of lobbing personal attacks at someone with whom you disagree. How progressive, by the way, that your insults are along misogynist and homophobic lines. What else can you come up with? Do I breathe through the mouth? Have an extra chromosome?

Based on the topic of the post, I believe each of you has an exciting career at Fox News ahead of you.

Mike, you're a cunt.

This is a common point of confusion when dealing with Mike. His last name is actually Hunt.

Mike, you are not a cunt, just a fucking idiot.

Anyone who's ever been to the south knows exactly what this implies- which means Fox did. Fuck Fox and all their employees, and fuck Mike.

So does this make Cindy John's Sugar Mama?

FoxNews's use of the term is indecent in every sense of the word. It is racist, sexist, ageist. Those who defend its use are in the same boat.

Totally agree. Listen to this song and explain how the term is an accurate description of Michelle Obama.

Jeebus. Even IF Michelle Obama had used the phrase "baby daddy" - which apparently hasn't happened - that does not make it OK for FOX to go referring to her as Barack's "Baby Mama." There's not even an attempt to explain how that logic works.

What one spouse calls another as a term of endearment, ironically or sincerely, can be rude and insulting, when used by a third person. This is not a tricky concept.

It doesn't matter to me what they say Michelle Obama said because I realize that the Republicans are desperate to win in Nov. and as of now they haven't got a convincing platform. If their platform consists of going after the candidates wife it's a pathetic and unimaginative course of action.

They tried this with the Clintons and it didn't work but there are more serious issues at stake in this election I would think they would want to address some of them. OR maybe the American people don't really care about the war, gas prices, the economy, jobs, healthcare and education else they would stand up and reject these Rovian tricks.
