But they've got a pretty decent story about McCain's flipflops and missteps.

Can't Quote the AP

I was wondering when this story was going to grow some legs. They were probably just waiting for a similarly visible Obama "flipflop" that they can cite before they wrote up this story.
Can't have a story out there diminishing the credibility of a Republican without something to do the same to the Democrat. But at least someone is paying attention to McCain.
You can quote the AP.
But if you think you can't then don't link to them, because that's probably not legal either.
Really?
Personally, I feel like modern campaigning can be summed up in these three graphs:
And in truth, no candidate can expect to make it through a grueling presidential campaign without suffering one or two self-inflicted wounds — the most grievous of which are far worse than anything that has happened to McCain.
Republican President Gerald Ford's declaration in 1976, at the height of the Cold War, that there was "no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe" was a memorable one.
Or more recently Democratic Sen. John Kerry's decision to go windsurfing in 2004, an event that Republicans turned into a metaphor for a politician who shifts with the wind.
And the reporter said Obama's out-of-context comments at the fundraiser about guns & religion were worse than McCain's shocking changes in position.
Why do we even bother having telling the truth and having reality-based policies?
The paragraph that starts out with "Salter also said McCain had told..." is disjointed; I looked for another copy of the article and couldn't find it. The AP "reporter" also forgot to include a material fact in that paragraph that, when omitted, may trigger a developed response; as a test, try to figure out what it is. (And, as a side note, those six words I excerpted are almost certainly fairuse and that would almost certainly still apply if I excerpted the whole paragraph.)
Here's a similar NYT story; see if you can tell what's wrong with the fourth paragraph.
Give up? McCain's position is still basically what it's been all along, he just tried a new tactic. And, Bumiller misleads about what the GOP base wants. I'm sure both of those were fully intentional.
if the ap doesn't want bloggers to quote them, then don't link to them either. if they think the internet is bad for their business, well, then let's prove them right.
This article actually plays down McCain's gaffes / flip flops / lies, etc. The reality is that he has been far worse than this.
In fact, McCain has been far worse than Kerry ever was in his flip flops alone.
The bottom line is this: McCain has become McBush, and in the process of doing so has become dumbed down.
Now he cannot even speak intelligently, just like Bush cannot. Isn't it about time we have a president who actually seems intelligent? With Bush and McBush we have people who seem like morons.
I'm boycotting the link due to the AP's ridiculous "no quote" policy.
I'm boycotting the link
That'll teach them ;).
You're kidding, right? The AP writer actually states that McCain hasn't committed any gaffes on a par with Obama's "bitter" remarks, and does everything he can to make McCain's gaffes seem less important that they are.
The truth is that McCain's missteps have become so glaring that his media buddies can no longer gloss them over with sprinkled donuts. They're forced to acknowledge, but they're downplaying them.
Sadly, this is such a common state of affairs that even Matt Y is taken in.
Windsurfing is worse than not knowing the diifference between Sunni and Shia?
Republicans didn't turn windsurfing into a metaphor, AP and the teevee did. Republican spin goes 24/7 and McCain's stupidity is dismissed as minor. The AP story was meant to downplay the gaffes, while recognizing they exist. And at the end of the article, McCain is portrayed as a noble sort, tolerating teh accusations in good humor.
The article says that everything McCain has said or done is insignificant next to what Obama has done or other Democrats in the past have done. They pass trivial judgment on serious issues inconsistancies and indications of a weak intellect.
Cap and trade anyone?
McCain is a flawed candidate with a flawed campaign. Voters should be able to see through him by November...

@TLB: Are you seriously whining that the GOP is the victim of a purposeful blurring of context? SPARE ME.
The Rep machine has thrived for years on such tactics - experiencing your pathetic protest, I've got to say thanks for giving me a hearty taste of the disdain your camp has made its calling card.
AP said... Arguably, McCain has yet to make that kind of gaffe despite enduring a candidacy of remarkable adversity in which he went from front-runner to the campaign cellar and back again.
Hmmmm. I guess the reporter didn't hear about the "100 years" comment, eh?
Or that McCain was vehemently against tax cuts before he was for them.
Or how he was against offshore drilling and said it would take years for it to produce any oil, but now he's for it and it will help in the short term.
Or how Iraq would be easy but then he berated those who said it would be easy.
And let's not forget his Social Security whopper:
2004: "Without privatization, I don't see how you can possibly, over time, make sure that young Americans are able to receive Social Security benefits."
2008: "I'm not for, quote, privatizing Social Security. I never have been. I never will be."
But no, he hasn't made a major gaffe yet ... except constantly.
oh come on, don't cave to the AP, their silly policy has no basisin law, violate it flagrantly and at will. they can't do nothin to ya.
If the mainstream newsmedia were to do a story about McCain's flipflops and missteps, it would probably turn our to be a heartwarming tale of the time he tripped while wearing sandals . . .
Can't quote the AP... sorry, I won't follow links to it either. The stupid shall be punished.
