Good work, Joe Lieberman; Good work, AIPAC. Here's John Hagee on the antichrist:

Hagee assures us that the Antichrist will be a homosexual who's also "partially Jewish, as was Adolph Hitler, as was Karl Marx." Where Hagee got the idea that Hitler was Jewish, I couldn't quite say, but it seems that in the eyes of this "pro-Israel" (in the sense of urging Israel to start wars that he believes will lead to its destruction) leader, all evil stems from the Jews. And all this time I thought the Antichrist would be Jewish, but partly homosexual. And a vegan. I also expected the Antichrist to be taller.

It occured to me, as well, that the Antichrist might be the pastor of a very large church, one who broadcasts regularly to reach his minions of evil.

Actually, Hitler took great care to cover up anything hinky in his ancestry. After the Anschluss with Austria, Hitler had the entire town where he was born razed to the ground and all evidence of his mothers' ancestry destroyed. There is considerable speculation that his mother was actually the illegitimate daughter of Adolf Schicklgruber, supposedly a Jewish businessman, whose house she worked in as a maid.

Was it so long ago -- early Reagan era -- that when actual WWII-era fascists were found in the Republican Party's Ethnic Outreach committee, it was pshawed away as "antique and anemic" anti-Semitism, unlike the 'real' or 'new' anti-Semitism which included those people who thought Israeli policy for the Palestinians should be something other than permanent war.

Why and how is it that Joe Lieberman is still a Senator from Connecticut? Do they still support him? Are these increasingly rabid, degenerate views and alliances that Lieberman expresses and makes still ones that his constituency value? Don't they have impeachment laws? Don't they have a new candidate in the wings? What is wrong with our democracy that guys like this can stay in power (like Bush, for another instance) well past their use-by dates?

Lieberman was elected to a six-year term beginning in January 2005 by the voters of Connecticut.

Unless he resigned or died, the only way he would cease to be Senator is if the Senate removed him, which of course would and should never be done for his opinions, only in the case of felonies or other criminal activities.

There is no such thing as recall or state-based impeachment/conviction of Federal officials, which includes members of the House and Senate.

There is no doubt about the ancestry of Hitler's mother, Klara Poelzl, who was the daughter of Johann Poelzl and Johanna Hiedler, both Germans with no Jewish ancestry.

The issue was the background of Hitler's father, Alois Hitler. Alois was born out of wedlock to Maria Anna Schiklgruber, an unmmarried peasant woman. He was born Alois Schicklgruber. When young Alois was still a young child, his mother married Johann Georg Hiedler (who, by a previous marriage, was the father of Johanna Hiedler, Adolf Hitler's maternal grandmother).

After the death of his mother and stepfather, Alois Schicklgruber got a legal decree stating that his stepfather, Johann Georg Hiedler, was in fact also his biological father, and he changed his name to Hitler (basically the same name as Hiedler).

I think most historians accept that Johann Georg Hiedler was probably, indeed, Hitler's biological father. There are also some who claim that his biological father was Johann Georg's brother, Johann Nepomuk Hiedler, who raised young Alois as his apprentice, I believe. Either way, neither of the Hiedlers had any Jewish ancestry.

There was also a rumor, going back to the 1920s, that Alois Hitler's father was actually the Jew Leopold Frankenberger, in whose house in Graz Maria Anna Schickgruber supposedly worked. But this isn't true - Ian Kershaw's biography shows that it was nonsense, a smear invented by Hitler's enemies. There were no Jews in Graz at the time of Alois Hitler's birth, and there's no evidence his mother ever was there. Total nonsense.

It never ceases to amaze me how fundamentalists like Hagee -- who adhere to a literal interpretation of the Bible -- can engage in such wild speculation based on the most vague and cryptic lines of scripture. These are the same folks who insist on "strict constructionists" when it comes to the Constitution. For the Bible, not so much.

Lieberman is not going to be the GOP VP (it would tear the party apart; he might not even get the votes to be nominated), why would he resign as Senator?

And if he did, he'd be replaced by a Republcan, who unlike the vile Lieberman wouldn't vote with the Dems 80-90% of the time.

I dislike antisemitism and homophobia as much as the next straight protestant, but you have to admit that Hagee's done a real service in narrowing down the identity of the Antichrist for everyone.

I mean, hell, when I was a kid we thought the antichrist would surely be a catholic. So, if we can limit our search to Jews (and there are fewer of them than catholics, right?) and gay Jews at that, the choice is much narrower.

Or, maybe it still will be a catholic--a gay, Jewish convert to catholicism. Or, maybe a gay catholic who converted to judaism?

I'll email Hagee and see if I can get any insight. I'll let you all know.

The rumor that Hitler had a Jewish ancestor is part of a larger phenomenon that many famous antisemites, including some of the worst inquisitors, had Jewish roots that they may have been ashamed of or tried to cover up.

Remember the wise words o' Hagee: he has to be a *German* gay Jew, so most of the anti-christ hopefuls mentioned (sorry, Matt) are disqualified. All in all, gay German Jews haven't fared too well this past century, and I imagine they're aren't tons left frequenting Berlin's cabarets. On the plus side, that narrows down our antichrist search to at the most a few thousand. With any luck, we can bring on the rapture before we run out of oil!

I hope everyone knows that the anti-christ of Revelation was actually the contemporary Roman emperor, probably Nero. I recommend "A History of the End of the World" by Jonathan Kirsch for a good survey of the scholarship on the Book of Revelation.
