Fighting in Peshawar

28 Jun 2008 10:41 am

The latest sign of problems in the Afghanistan-Pakistan area is that the Taliban's felt confident enough to launch an operation on the Pakistan side of the border in the Peshawar area. The Pakistani military is fighting back and presumably ought to be able to drive the Taliban away from a key town but that'll hardly resolve the underlying problems.

This is shadowboxing.

Why, given the lack of success historically in occupying that unhappy country, are we in Afghanistan?

Because every Democrat will tell you, that is where the REAL threat is. Not strategically critical Iraq with all it's resources like massive oil reserves that AQ said was the Central Front. But a remote non-strategic impoverished land of barbarism with similar kinfolk across the Pak Border.

And even better, like Nixon, Obama vows to attack the Sanctuary. This time, Pakistan, instead of Cambodia.

Of course, Obamessiah has yet to explain his great wisdom and judgment in attacking the nation that 90% of our Afghan war supplies come through and all our Navy missions. Perhaps like Hanoi and Haiphong, Obama intends to mine Karachi and the two Baluchistan harbors so we can "bring the 6 criminals hiding in Pakistan to their ACLU defenders.

Love it. Especially with his Lefty allies now blocking military recruiting stations and running TV ads urging mothers to keep their children from national service.

Isn't is great when you see the dyed in the wool racists attacking Obama? That these racists demonstrate that their only reason for being in Iraq is the theft of Iraq's oil?

It gives you a deep understanding of just how fucking evil the Republican Party and those who vote for it really are.

Eventually we will simply need to nuke Pakistan to take their weapons out of the grasp of the lunatics.

One of about 3 countries that should get the same treatment (Iran, N. Korea anyone?)

I hope Bush does this before his term ends in 2009.

And what's all this nonsense about the theft of Iraq's oil? Who is stealing it? Certainly no americans or anyone connected with the Bush administration. Is Obama stealing it? Is Matt Y stealing it? Please clarify for us,...

Back in January, several groups, networks, or whatever joined together in a new "Taliban Movement of Pakistan" under Beitullah Mehsud, who had been consolidating his authority with some apparent support from Islamabad for a couple of years. They've been aggressive since that time.

With regard to the above, I've decided to write a post laying out some clear historical and cultural differences between Iraq and Afghanistan relevant to the current American involvement in each. I doubt I get it up before Sunday night or Monday, though, as I'm moving this weekend.

Wow, I see that the right wing nuthouse has room not just for the terminally stupid and racist, but also for the terminally stupid and genocidal.

Matt, your site attracts some of the sickest thugs I can imagine.

Chris Ford, while ranting as usual, does hit one thing right. Afghanistan and Pakistan are utterly and totally irrelevant to the national security of the US - even if the Taliban regain power in BOTH countries and even if Al Qaeda safely resides in BOTH countries.

Al Qaeda can be dealt with in other ways, and Pakistan's nukes are utterly irrelevant since they exist solely to keep India from crushing them.

The Taliban, if they controlled Pakistan, would no more give those nukes to "terrorists" than the Pakistanis would.

What is critical about the Peshawar situation is that if that area ends up being controlled or severely infiltrated by the Taliban, then the NATO supply routes are in big trouble. They already are undergoing considerable numbers of attacks on convoys.

As William Lind said the other day, the US/NATO mission in Afghanistan is "circling the drain". The only logical thing to do is pull out and avoid yet another decades long drawn-out, futile COIN operation that ends in failure like Vietnam and Iraq.

Meanwhile, in Iraq, the "Awakening" groups are coming under pressure from the US military, and according to reports, many are defecting back to the Sunni insurgent groups. Abu Abid, the guy in Anbar Province everybody interviewed last year when "The Awakening" was a big deal? Under arrest by the US now.

Tell me again how "teh surge" worked.

Eventually we will simply need to nuke Pakistan to take their weapons out of the grasp of the lunatics.

Please don't threaten innocent people's lives. It's not a good thing.
