Good Work

20 Jun 2008 11:20 pm

Greater Boston Legal Services "provides free civil (non-criminal) legal assistance to low-income people in Boston and thirty-one additional cities and towns. The help we offer ranges from legal advice to full case representation, depending on client need." Naturally, rampaging Celtics fans decided to trash it:

I miss the Super Bowl.

you are a grade A wanker Yglesias. Every city has obnoxious knobs that do this nonsense following championships.

Indefensible. D-bags like this ruin the reps for everyone else in town.

As I go to sleep tonight, I'll take comfort knowing that every one one of those idiots whose mugs got caught on tape will soon be spending a bit of time in jail. And I like the Celtics.

You're right, Matt, Boston fans are SOOOOOO much worse than people in any other city. It's not like Georgetown people destroyed anything when the team beat Vander- oh, wait. Come on, you deserve a Malkin award for this bullshit.

Friend of mine in college in Eugene, Oregon, used to say if we nuked the University of Oregon stadium on game night, we'd get rid of most of the morons in town.

Where's Al Qaeda and their version of "Black Sunday" when we need them?

Ever see that movie? A classic. Brilliant. Based on a Thomas Harris book before he started doing Hannibal Lector stuff.

Yeah, right, since the ex-varsity-athlete, dedicated-students-of-civics-and-government who populate the ranks of our nation's municipal police forces and prosecutor's offices are so fond of people who need free legal services. *sarcasm*

I doubt the cops are going to be hot to prosecute these dudes.

But even if the responsible cops/prosecutors happen to not be dicks, I doubt that they're going to view a face-by-face inspection of every Celtics fan they can find who lives in the area as a worth-while pursuit. Getting an armed robber on video is often a different prospect than a bunch of rioters. In that case there may end up being more to the story that makes it easier to solve and more worth following up (perhaps another lead in the case like a stolen car that the suspect was seen driving, or the suspect was caught on video robbing a bank and therefore possibly belongs to a limited number of usual suspects who often are responsible for those crimes as repeat offenders).

Good thing there wasn't an orphanage in the path of the fans.

Doesn't matter much what the cops think, Swan. I'm sure Tom Menino won't want to look like a mayor who lets this sort of crap go unpunished.

Scarpy, I'm sure the mayor knows as well as the cops do that they can't exactly pull out their Ledger of Registered Celtics Fans for mug shots and match them up to the blurry, fleeting pictures in the video.

Anyway, I'm sure cops have found plenty of ways not to do what they're asked or to do things that are not allowed.

I'd like to refer to KSK's seminal work on the subject.

Love that dirty water!

While this video illustrates that Celtics fans are indeed dicks, it also demonstrates that so is every other inhabitant of Boston.

I fucking hate that city. It's like a cross between the worst aspects of NYC and DC, yet somehow worse than both.

Get off your high-horse Matt.

Just a profound analysis from Mr. Larson. bravo.

I also like how the Carrot Top-lookalike is whooping' and hollerin' and filmin' along with the rest of the idiots until about 12 second into the video when he gets freaked out and makes a break for it.

Ironically his is one of the few faces potentially identifiable. See you in prison, Carrot Top Man!

Much as I hate Boston, we have the same kind of fuckheads in L.A.

To be fair, the Boston d-bags are right - this happens ALL THE TIME in other cities after championships. That's why there are so many examples of this happening after the Giants beat the Pats in the Super Bowl. It's just that the Youtube and the internets didn't exist back then to document the atrocities...

Now, now. L.A. fans don't trash legal service clinics. At least, not until they've run out of police cruisers.

This goes beyond the domain of sports fanatics, this is just macho BS run amok, and whether it manifests itself in post-championship havoc or any other variety of dick-swinging it's all the same.

The clinic was destroyed by rampaging DRUNKS, the sort of morons who go through life looking for an excuse to pick a fight. It's a real stretch to claim that they represent ALL fans of a particular sport or a particular team or a particular city.

Such morons seem to make life just as miserable DURING the game for the majority of well-behaved sports fans as they do AFTER the game for the unlucky owners of property that happens to fall in the path of their "celebrations".

For the life of me, I've never understood why "smashing up stuff" is the way some folks choose to express their exuberance after a sports victory. But it seems to happen everywhere. This story hardly proves that Celtics fans and/or Bostonians are more prone to this kind idiocy than anybody else.

Wicked Pissaaa!

Gee, if only there were crime statistics or something that might be used to make an actual comparison between cities with teams that have just won major sports championships.

Swan: Over a dozen have them have been caught and already are being prosecuted. I saw their arraignment on TV. The ringleader was arrested within about three seconds of the incident.

I believe Detroit, Chicago, and L.A. are traditionally the worst places for post-championship riots. I also recall a really bad one in Montreal after the 1993 Stanley Cup. I agree that it seems to be rarer in New York, but then again it didn't really happen in Boston after the Patriots and Red Sox championships, and even this incident, while terrible, was pretty small-scale.

Where's the evidence that the fans "decided" to trash the office based on the services provided?

And after clinking the link, why the hell did Legal Services spend $300,000 of grant money and donations on renovating their lobby instead of on, you know, "legal assistance to low-income people in Boston and thirty-one additional cities and towns."

Who knew that Celtics hooligans were such Conservative Law-and-Order types?

Yeah Boston apologists, it's not like this has ever happened before:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/playoffs/2004-10-21-fan-death_x.htm

Woman died after the Yankees/Boston 2004 playoff series.

And I remember the cars burning after the first of the recent Patriots Super Bowl Wins.

Stop acting like hooligans.

They must have heard that GBLS serves the illegal immigrant community. Plainly, they're no more pleased about that than the rest of us.

Is Matt even a Lakers fan? How does this affect him? These things sometimes happen. What sour grapes. If you hate Boston so much, why do you care if it gets a little f-d up after yet another championship?

I think this video proves that black people are uniquely degenerate.

Pretty nice trolling.

You're right, Matt, Boston fans are SOOOOOO much worse than people in any other city. It's not like Georgetown people destroyed anything when the team beat Vander- oh, wait. Come on, you deserve a Malkin award for this bullshit.

I call bullshit. All that happened after that game was a rowdy yet law-abiding march down M Street. Got a source for your Hoya bashing?

Wow, I hate this increasingly popular term, but...what a D-Bag post.

C'mon, highly paid Atlantic blogger, let's see some actual "reporting".

How many folks were arrested after the Celts win compared to other cities wins? How much property damage, compared to other cities property damage? Also, be sure to note the cultural/political importance of each broken window you find while doing your research.

I guess Petey was right.

While this video illustrates that Celtics fans are indeed dicks, it also demonstrates that so is every other inhabitant of Boston. I fucking hate that city. It's like a cross between the worst aspects of NYC and DC, yet somehow worse than both.
Is the baby gonna cry? In the young 21st Century, Boston has racked up two World Series, three Superbowls and now an NBA championship.

You have reason to be jealous. You have reason to hate us.

Your tears are like milk to us.

Yup, Petey was right about MY, no question.
