McCain and Clayton Williams

15 Jun 2008 05:30 pm

Clayton Williams is a prominent person in Texas politics. Prominent enough to secure the GOP gubernatorial election in 1990. During this election campaign he said various things that decent people find abhorrent, such as joking about rape that "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." These remarks were publicized in Texas and perhaps played a role in Williams' 1990 loss. But this is a big country, and there are lots of non-decent people out there. Thus, Williams was tapped as a fundraiser for John McCain and put together an event that was going to raise $300,00 for McCain. So far, so good -- we already know that McCain has a fondness for sexist jokes.

But uh-oh, this fundraiser was scheduled for the time period when McCain is trying to woo women disappointed by Hillary Clinton's loss by touring his love of Abba. So when the McCain campaign got asked about the "lie back and enjoy it" remark, they swiftly canceled the fundraiser.

So that was the story -- McCain cancels fundraiser. Except now it turns out that the fundraiser's not canceled and the $300,000 is still being banked, the venue is just shifting to someone else's house. But to whatever extent McCain would have owed Williams favors pre-"cancellation" he still owes him favors now. It was the bundling of the contributions, not the use of Williams' house, that was the thing of value Williams was offering McCain.

Do you really think so? I mean, folks who embarrass a candidate aren't usually able to call in favors, are they? I mean, except in Obama's case, where all the "volunteers" who do so are likely to end up with jobs in the administration.

Touting?

McSame is proving himself to be one giant hypocrite.

And it is frankly scary how McSame is selling himself out to so many people of very shady backgrounds.

His entire campaign is run by lobbyists...and not just any lobbyists, but some of the most sleazy around with a veritable rogue's gallery of client.

McSame should never be allowed into the White House...just repaying the favors he owes to all of these jerks would bring our country down.

First, whomever wins is going to owe a lot of favors. This has been the case of every election since Andrew Jackson.

Second, 'is' seems like the wrong tense. 1990 is eighteen years ago. And since there is not a shortage of prominent Texas politicians whom are supporting McCain - Phil Grahm, Rick Perry, the current resident of the White House - it seems like only 300K (out of what, $100 million that will be raised?) will not get him past the velvet rope all that easily.

Last, I find obnoxious when Hannity, etc play the 'questionable associations' game; I would rather the other side not start the same.

No, Abba fiend, McCain is actually going on tour with ABBA. He's the opening act, and will come back out during ABBA's encore to sing "Take a Chance on Me" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You" with them.

Wel, at least Obamma supporters really wanted him to be president.
Republicans were just stuck with McCain, as most republicans want change, not conservatism.
McCain, if elected will bring change to washington. Obamma, if elected will bring change to Washington.
either way you look at it, the destruction that is the current presidency will no longer be.
THANK GOD!
and we can get on with what our four fathers started. DEMOCRACY!

Woody,
"Take A Chance On Me" is Obama's campaign song (right after "99 Problems"). With McCain you know exactly what you are going to get. With Obama on the other hand... Who knows?

I volunteer for Obama. But I don't want a job in the administration. I volunteer because I want our country to be a more just and moral place (and to be a reliable and fair international partner with other nations). This role for the USA simply isn't possible under GOP leadership. Out of fairness, all politicians have accepted donations from bad people. McCain just seems to have a knack for walking into these public relations nightmares on a regular basis and waiting too long to apologize (thereby calling his competency into question). McCain won't lose the election because of this donation or others like it. At some point, later this year, McCain will lose his (famous) psychotic temper very publicly in a manner that calls his very sanity, emotional stability, and rationality into question. The video of McCain losing his temper will be replayed ceaselessly by the media for a week, perhaps with the obscenties bleeped out. This public craziness will cost McCain the election. I am a veteran. McCain's honorable military service and prolonged captivity doesn't have anything to do with his temper. McCain is just an emotionally infantile human being (like the current GOP president).

You have to remember, McCain is the guy who refers to his wife Cindy, as a C**T.

You're right dimitri, you do know what your getting with McCain, four more years of Bush.

John McCain is Bush on steroids.

What an ugly petty little man.

People should check out the story where he said this to his wife in public... overheard and reported on by his own staffers:

"At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days."

McCains' temper? Well, it would have been quite a scene if Lieberman would have "taken a dive" when Obama lost his cool and physically moved him off the Senate floor and and away from the cameras a couple of weeks ago. That was completely a completly unprofessional and dangerous move by Sen. Obama, whom usually comes across as Dr. Cool.

It pains me to a great degree to see our electoral process trashed by these so-called candidates for our nations highest office. A few weeks ago I was in a bind as to who was worthy enough to receive my vote. I have ruled out both McCain and Obama, who's left you ask. I typed into my search bar "alternative candidates" and found some solid folks we haven't been reading about in the press. Question to the press is why are these viable candidates being ignored by you all. After some soul searching and study I have decided to vote across party lines. The Green Party has a woman I think just might make a pretty good President, have a peek at her at runcynthiarun.org if you like what you see please pass it onto your friends and family, this Lady needs our support. By the way I was going to vote for Hillary.

What else can every be expected from John McCaint???

Decency?

Are you kidding me?!!!!

He sold all decency and dignity down the river the day he got off the plane from Vietnam.

He believes himself entitled.

Libs aren't too original, are they? McSame? That's about as original as Texans for Truth was after the Swift Boat Vetarans for Truth revealed the real John Kerry.

Obama supporters have no brains. Period.

Change is the only thing that is going to be in our pockets if Mr. Obama is our next president. If that happens, maybe we should tell the jihadists how much we love them. Maybe if we do that they will leave us alone.

Dear John Trehow,
I hope you are checking back with your comments because I have news for you:"Republicans were just stuck with McCain, as most republicans want change, not conservatism" is the most most uneducated statment I have seen posted to any article on the election. Republicans are stuck with John McCain, that is true, but we are angry because we want a more conservative candidate, not because we want an undefined and fairytale style of "change." McCain is to conservative as light beer is to New Caste. Many Republicans are angry that our base did not rally together to put up a strong free-market man like Romney or Huckabee. Republicans probably don't have enough political capital to invest in a strong conservative, so we went with McCain, but that does not mean we have to be happy about it.

Is it true that Hillary's disaffected supporters are launching a support group called "C**ts for McCain"?

"McCain has a fondness for sexist jokes."

Jokes! Egad, how horrible! Everyone do like the homosexualist prig and cover their ears!

There are a lot of very rich oil men in Midland, Texas. George Bush was there. They bought him and his Daddy. They will buy McCain just as they did the others. McCain will sell his soul to be President. God Help my Grandchildren

thrh............if they called themselves that they'd be confused with male republicans.

Apparently McCain didn't do the Google and look up this guy beforehand. His campaign can't handle a search engine, but they somehow are supposed to master 4th generation warfare?

Carter, are you calling McCain a "homosexualist pig"? Do you have any proof? I know his "wife" cakes on the makeup. but really, do you think Cindy's a guy?

Awful lot of people in the thread who have no clue on how to post here.

IF EVERY MAN WHO EVER MADE A SEXIST JOKE ABOUT A WOMAN WERE ELIMINATED FROM MAKING A POLITICAL CONTRIBUTION, THEN THE ONLY CONTRIBUTIONS IN POLITICS WOULD COME FROM WOMEN.

COME ON NOW, MATTHER AND ALL YOU HYPOCRIT MEN WHO WROTE THESE COMMENTS, BE HONEST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE AND QUIT THIS BULLSHIT.

BY THE WAY, ANN RICHARDS WAS ELECTED GOVERNER AND CW LOST. SINCE TEXAS IS A VERY REPUBLICAN CONSERVATION STATE, ANN WON WITH A LOT OF REPUBLICANS.

Ok just wanting to comment on what someone said. We were NOT founded as a Democracy if you look at our forefathers they were freaked out about a Democracy they founded a REPUBLIC. If you look at history we as a nation have changed from what our forefathers founded to something radically different. No we are a Democratic-Oligarchy. We give people the ability to vote but with no real choices in the people because those in power choose who they want to do their bidding and we are stuck with it. IF we had a republic again power would be wrested from the interest groups and put back into the hands of those that are intelligent and are focused on the people to some extent instead of giving people this false sense of we have control, keep in mind ALL people are stupid it's just a matter of in what subject and MANY stupid people vote so I want my REPUBLIC back with people running it that know how to get things done. Unfortunately not a single one of these candidates is going to do that because they are limp wristed panderers that don't know what change is.

Nancy, please don't SHOUT. (We can hear you just fine in lower case.)

This entry made the front page of google news.

Williams' remarks were both ridiculous and yet not unusual for a man of his generation. Inexcusable. But if we want to start talking about every money bundler, let's not forget the Dems and Barack are using people like Jodie Evans' Code Pink. Both of these candidates have huge problems. How did we get here? Is it impossible to get a candidate without Louis Vuitton-type luggage?

"Williams' remarks were both ridiculous and yet not unusual for a man of his generation."

Now that's fucked up. Saying something like this could probably kill the mood in the locker room back when I was in high school and that says a lot. The only kid I remember growing up with who I could see saying this actually became a rapist.

Well, everyone knows McCain has a horrible record with women. We shouldn't forget how McCain cheated on his wife for years and married one of his mistresses. At least he supposedly paid for the abortion when he knocked up one of his other mistresses.

Rufus P. Peabody

That comment about the abortion is just smear. I guess smearing people is great unless it's Obama then you're racist.

McCain was separated from his wife when he met cindy. His ex-wife is over it, but Obama fanboys seem to be making this election about family values since the Iraq angle is not working so well anymore, because WE ARE WINNING the WAR.

I will be voting Republican for the 1st time in my life. While a gifted rhetoritician, Obama's disgusting misuse of history and symbology are just too much. He claimed that you cant keep sending the same old people back to Washington and expect a different result. Hey I agree! But, it seems that that only applied to Hillary. All of these people that are part of the cadre that he embraces have been there for over 30 years! Kennedy, Biden, Inoue, Byrd, the list of names goes on...

Many Republicans are angry that our base did not rally together to put up a strong free-market man like Romney or Huckabee.

Awesome. These trolls troll themselves!

I will be voting Republican for the 1st time in my life.

I spent the weekend at the zoo, showing my partner's grandkids exotic animals. Look, kids, it's a classic troll!

I will be voting Republican for the 1st time in my life.

Point taken. However, the proper structure of this sort of comment requires that you begin with, "As a lifelong Democrat..."

I will be voting Republican for the 1st time in my life.

"I wasn't for dead Iranians and tax cuts for the rich until Obama won the nomination..."

By this standard, the standard that anyone who makes public sexist statements shouldn't be working or raising funds for a presidential campaign, Obama shouldn't be accepting the fundraising efforts of Jay Z or Will.I.am, both of whom have recorded CDs with comments that degrade women and call them vulgar names. Of course, as is generally the case, such standards only apply to Republicans.

I suppose this author assumes since Obama hands out favors in return for campaign contributions, so goes the nation. Can I come back to this site after the election and tell you what I really think of you? You'll be wallowing in self pity over the loss of your token candidate, and I'll be in the mood to let 'er rip in celebration of the victory for mine.

What kind of a bumbler is John McCain anyway?
Sunnis, Shias, "beer"...ad infinitum...! And now this...
Re: The Clayton Williams fund raiser in Texas.

As far as this election is concerned...McCain should - to quote Mr. Williams - "he should just lay back and enjoy it...(his huge loss in November)!!!

Does he not care that his handlers and staff are such idiots?

He acts as though he's not quite with it. In fact, he's just plainly an embarassment!

Does the USA really want another fool representimg us on the world's stage?

Good Lord... one would certainly hope not!

Two things:

1) McCain and\or his team KNEW about Williams' past comments and did not care - until they were made more public and brought up...

2) Or, it shows that the McCain Team can't run a Google search and spend 30 seconds reading a quick summary of this moron's background.

So - if McCain and his team can't run a Google search on Williams - no wonder why McCain can't remember who is who in Iraq and Iran.

I wouldn't say Claytie is a 'prominent' person in Texas politics. He's actually a bit of a joke. However, he can raise lots of money right now in Midland with oil prices being what they are. But the fact that the McCain campaign claims it was 'unaware' of his history is either laughable (if not true) or concerning (if true.)

And the wrapping himself with a stinted image of Dr. King was just disgusting. King was a pacifist: Say, Obama, I am not against war, just stupid war...pre-emptive strikes, he's OK! Expand operations in Afhanistan, OK! So, is this a troop transfer from Iraq to Afhanistan? You sure would think so with Karzai pointing fingers just like Obama now. Obama somehow annointed him self the metaphysical step-child of Dr. King (and JFK). He has foisted himself as some logical conclusion to the Civil Rights Movement. Even putting Jessie Jackson Jr. out there to threaten people who walked with Dr. King that serve in Congress to fall into line or face Obama jackboots. I thought it was about content of character, not race...

Easy way out of the dilemma: McCain says, "These are my contributors, not Clayton Williams' contributors." So, why doesn't McCain simply return the $300,000, then contact the donors himself and ask them to re-contribute the money directly to him--without Williams' as the intermediary. Easy! Or is it?
