Obama's Tunes

25 Jun 2008 02:11 pm

Barack Obama reveals what's on his iPod. Relative to the musical information he was prepared to release in spring 2007 he seems to have evolved in a more hip-hop direction.

UPDATE: Friend and reader JT reminds me that Obama's awesomely named body man Reggie Love is responsible for the hip-hopificiation of Obama's playlist. I want him to download some Girl Talk and think about the intellectual property law ramifications.

No Smashmouth?!?

Obama: "I only listen to Creed and Nickelback, and sometimes Creed-Nickelback mashups by my favorite DJ, DJ NickelCreed. Next question."

"Indeed it was reported last month that Obama will make a cameo performance on the rap singer Q-Tip's next album."

In related news, McCain will be making a cameo on the next album of these guys.

Let's not read too much into this. George W Bush had better musical taste than Kerry. I remember the round of iPod stories in 04 and Dubya said his had stuff like Creedence and George Jones, while Kerry's was full of U2 and the other typical pap.

I do appreciate hearing that Dylan likes Obama. Bob ain't no lefty, as we all should know -- he's said his favorite politician of all time was Goldwater.

What about Scarlett's Tom Waits cover album? Where's the love?

Obama's favorite Stones song is the correct one. Not a deep cut or anything, but still.

Additionally, one wonders whether he has heard RATM's version of "Maggie's Farm." It's probably the best of the several versions I've heard (Dylan, RATM, the Dead, the Specials, Stephen Malkmus and the Three Million Dollar Bashers), but Communist rap metal tends not to be standard fare for American politicians. I just think it plays better as an angry call to revolution than as a tired call to quit.

It's his body-man's fault. If you read the NY Times story about him, I forget his name, you'll find that he turned Obama onto more Hip-Hop.

I wonder where John McCain is on the music player timeline- probably past tape players. I'm guessing he listens to Elvis on a CD player from time to time.

Reggie Love is the body man.

U2 ain't pap! They support good causes, have a great attitude & wrote several anthems the likes of many would only drea, of writing. Every song/band doesn't have to be everything to everyone.

According to this- http://www.corante.com/loose/archives/002268.html Kerry liked U2, Springsteen and the Beatles.

Sorry- poison oak is laying me low today-

U2 ain't pap! They support good causes, have a great attitude & wrote several anthems the likes of which many could only dream of writing. The average opnionated hater couldn't write something 1/4 as entertaining as any one of the top 5-8 U2 songs. Anyway, every song/band doesn't have to be everything to everyone.

According to this- http://www.corante.com/loose/archives/002268.html Kerry liked U2, Springsteen and the Beatles.

Obama's playlist sounds remarkably like mine, but he really needs to add some electronica and world music. Then our IPods would be virtually interchangeable.

A pretty standard list, unless you're a hater.

Anyway, who cares what a guy listens to-- the important thing is that he reverses Bush's policy. I wouldn't give a shit if Obama wanted to list to something I hate if he would have stood up on the FISA thing.

A man is not a man without Billy Ocean on the IPod. You've just lost my vote, sir.

JT's a friend and reader? What am I, chopped liver?

Bush probably had his supposed list written for him by some consultant as another brick in his very-calculated wall of pander.

He probably hates music.

"Obama's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by" (Karl Rove).

"The key to the statement is that in the image he is with 'a beautiful date.' Not Michelle Obama .... When you think of a "beautiful date" specifically at a country club, do you picture an African-American woman? Would Rove's target audience? Or do you picture him there, a black man, smoking a cigarette indoors at a country club, with a white woman on his arm?" (HW at Talking Points Memo).

What you picture is O.J. Simpson at the country club with Nicole -- or, more recently, O.J. with a different white woman at the country club where he's looking for "the real killers", the way Obama will be using ineffectual police measures to find the terrorists.

Fortunately, the other black man in America's country clubs is Tiger Woods. But for that, Rove's meme would have won the election. Give him points for virtuosity and effort.

U2 ain't pap!

Uh, did you really mean "pap"? If that was supposed to be "pop", well U2 is definitely a pop band.

U2 is pop and pap.

I will admit to liking a couple of U2 albums. But they really should have disbanded a while ago.

U2 is okay, but listening to U2 is not correlated with having good musical taste. Listening to George Jones is.

I was the first commentator in this thread to bring that up!

Just because I criticize MY means I go un-boosted!

I demand props! God damn you!

Stu:
What about Ray Parker, Jr.?

Oh, Ray Parker, Jr. would suffice. Does Obama have Ghostbusters on his IPod? That would truly be awesome. It wouldn't make up for the lack of Billy Ocean, but its a start.

Is Reggie Love any relation to Buddy Love?

The Nutty Professor (1963)

Buddy Love: They're nice kids. All nice. All nice kids. They have very, very good taste, I might add.

Stella Purdy: I'm glad. It would be a shame to waste the genius of yours on the riff-raff.

Buddy Love: Well, honey, I always say, if you're good and you know it, why waste time beating around the bush, true?

Stella Purdy: And I always say that to love yourself is the beginning of a life-long romance. And after watching you, I know that you and you will be very happy together.

Buddy Love: Just a minute, sweetheart. I don't recall dismissing you.

Stella Purdy: You rude, discourteous egomaniac!

Buddy Love: You're crazy about me, right? And I can understand it. Only this morning, looking in the mirror before shaving, I enjoyed seeing what I saw so much I couldn't tear myself away.

[kisses his hand]

Buddy Love: Have some, baby?

Every politician loves the Corrs!

I love Obama. But Reggie Love is a Duke hoops bust who got - um - treated to "high tea" at a UNC frat house.
