Stealth Minorities

24 Jun 2008 01:12 pm

Via Brendan Nyhan, some puzzling remarks from a leader of the white supremacist community:

"I haven't seen this much anger in a long, long time," said Billy Roper, a 36-year-old who runs a group called White Revolution in Russellville, Ark. "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly nonwhite president."

Have we had a covertly nonwhite president? Warren Harding, perhaps?

Maybe he's referring to the fact that Bill Clinton was the "first black president"?

Harry Truman? Secretly purple.

Maybe they mean JFK because he was a... you know... Catholic.

Then again, who can spelunk the fathomless depths of white supremecy idiocy?

Bill Clinton was elected to the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame.

Covert nonwhites are jews.

White Supremacists. Charming.

I think what he's saying about the mood of his membership is probably true, though. I bet there's something akin to panic and rage out there in White Supremacist Land.

I'd read "overtly" as "He's not only one of *them*, but he doesn't even have the sense to try and hide it."

Bet? I think we've seen quite a bit of firsthand evidence of this from some of our resident trolls.

Quote of the year:

"One person put it this way: Obama for president paves the way for David Duke as president," said Duke

I assumed that he meant that any President who failed to stand up to the "black agenda." Definitely Clinton, and probably Bush II (Rice, Powell), possibly others.

No doubt behavior such as appointing blacks to prominent positions would leave the white supremacist people believing the President may be part black, and doing stuff like requesting a copy of his birth certificate and scrutinizing it.

I'm pretty sure this is a reference to both

(a) JFK being a papist, and
(b) Various rumors about Warren Harding being part black, or Lincoln being a melungeon or something.

Actually, it could be Eisenhower.

Remember: search first, then post. And, a search will show that at least four presidents may have been covertly and partly nonwhite.

I was thinking of discussing the issues with the linked article, but perhaps MattY would care to take a closer look at some of those issues instead. Those include attempting to smear others who oppose BHO. And, it includes taking the word of fundraising-centric groups like the SPLC and the ADL; see this for an example of how the SPLC engaged in what the ADL refers to as "hate".

And, surely even MattY can figure out what's wrong about the following:

Obama has worked hard to minimize the issue of race in his presidential campaign. When asked about divisiveness and hate, he talks instead about ways in which unity between blacks and whites has inspired him. He chose to "reject and denounce" an endorsement from Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan. Obama quit his church after his pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., spoke of racism and oppression in the "United States of white America."

And, surely even MattY can figure out not just what's wrong with the following, but how it's basically an ad:

Earlier this month, Obama's campaign launched a Web site to defuse the false rumors that hate-mongers spread on the Internet. The site lists a series of untruths about Obama -- that he is Muslim; that his books contain racist passages; that his wife, Michelle, used the word "whitey" -- and discredits them.

Right?

Covertly nonwhite = people with white skin who support equal rights for people with nonwhite skin. It's really just a reflection of the level of paranoia within this mindset that even white people can secretly be nonwhite. Actual skin color is secondary to whether you're one of "us" or one of "them". However, with an overtly nonwhite candidate running, white supremacists may have to hold their nose and vote for the covertly nonwhite John McCain.

Well, there goes the .000001 percent white supremacist vote.

This reminds me of a voter interviewed by the BBC before the WV primary. He told the interviewer that he worried "a black president would make whites second-class citizens, as revenge."

???

I wonder how much of this stuff will become visible before November? Or burble up afterwards?

"One person put it this way: Obama for president paves the way for David Duke as president," said Duke

David Duke is as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Bet? I think we've seen quite a bit of firsthand evidence of this from some of our resident trolls.

Very true. It's hard to understate how much Cal is a-twitter over the horrifying prospect.

A bag of hammers at least has some utility.

From the Post article:

Don Black spends 16 hours each day on his laptop computer reading hundreds of derogatory Obama comments posted on Stormfront.org, a Web site with the motto "white pride world wide." Black, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, launched the site in 1995 to create a central meeting place for the white power movement. In the wake of Obama's securing enough delegates for the nomination, Stormfront, he says, has begun to fulfill his vision.

A site that drew a few thousand visitors per day in 2002 has expanded into Black's full-time job, attracting more than 40,000 unique users each day who can post on 54 different message boards, he said. Black has enlisted 40 moderators and his 19-year-old son to help run Stormfront.

Posters on Stormfront complain that Obama represents the end of "white rule" and the beginning of "multiculturalism." They fear that he will promote affirmative action, support illegal immigration and help render whites, who make up two-thirds of the U.S. population, "the new minority."

"I get nonstop e-mails and private message from new people who are mad as hell about the possibility of Obama being elected," said Black, a white power activist since the 1970s. "White people, for a long time, have thought of our government as being for us, and Obama is the best possible evidence that we've lost that. This is scaring a lot of people who maybe never considered themselves racists, and it's bringing them over to our side."

Ahh, I miss Ron Paul and his webfans.

Everyone is assuming that this 36-year-old man who goes by "Billy" actually knows the meaning of "overtly."

More likely he used it for emphasis than for the literal meaning of the word.

Wonder how much of this stuff will surface before November? Or after the election, if Obama wins?

I have in-laws who live in the Atlanta exurbs and think that an Obama victory will lead to marauding gangs of black men from downtown ATL heading out to Bumfuck to steal their lawn tractors.

And for those who don't frequent Whackjob Kelly's Pit Of Obsession , here's one of his regular commenters:

buy guns the time is coming to fight back and yes many will die in this fight against drug dealers like The Race ( la raza ) But we may not win but we as a people need to show the monkeys what we can do, don't fight back you son's will become prison bitchs.

Charming, no?

A bag of hammers at least has some utility.

How about "David Duke is as dumb as The Lonewacko?"

look on google trends for white power key words. i looked at "white power" "white supremacy" "kkk" "ku klux klan" and "neo nazi" and didn't really see anything significant.

is this one of these "the plural of anecdote is not data" problems?

Well, there goes the .000001 percent white supremacist vote.

I'm pretty sure there are more than 3 white supremacists in the US. But I'm also sure that the vast majority weren't voting for Democrats at this point anyway.

Remember: search first, then post. And, a search will show that at least four presidents may have been covertly and partly nonwhite.

Remember: read the post first, then comment. Matt linked to an article suggesting Harding may have been "covertly and partly" black. Another useful hint: whenever possible, avoid taking the side of the white supremacist.

Anyway, the point isn't that this white supremacist guy is crazy because all past presidents were definitely 100% white (although for all intents and purposes they were). The point is that this white supremacist guy is crazy because he seems to think there are a bunch of nonwhite people infiltrating our ranks by cleverly being born with white skin. Including some past presidents! Lonewacko apparently finds nothing unusual about this claim however.

President Babe Ruth

I used to argue with these guys. According to them nearly all modern presidents were crypto-jews. To prove it they linked up a picture of Bush in a yarmulke at the wailing wall. The rabbithole runs deep in those circles.

Everyone is assuming that this 36-year-old man who goes by "Billy" actually knows the meaning of "overtly."

More likely he used it for emphasis than for the literal meaning of the word.

This is as how I took it, not as some code word.

Reminded me of that Gene Wilder line from Blazing Saddles

Jim: You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

Wonder what these guys would do if they found out the President was an alien (and I don't mean a Mexican)?

"Black, a former Ku Klux Klan leader"

Oh, now we know who "Chris Ford" really is...

ibid:

The linked article - and MattY's like thereto - only mention the possibility of one (1) prez being covertly black. I pointed out that there are at least three other possibilities. Thus, I added information not covered by the NYT article or by MattY's post.

Also, the idea that by disagreeing with the author of the WaPo link one is thereby "taking the side of the white supremacist" is a LogicalFallacy, but one that's certainly engaged in by many useful idiots.

HTH.

Bob Barr is widely perceived in far-right circles as "passing." Google "Is Bob Barr black?" and you'll find quite a few references. Could be another implication of "overt" here.
