The Goods

This time the Hewitt/Patterson duo really have Barack Obama and Trinity United Church of Christ nailed as Pastor Wright congratulates some young parishoners on their graduation from college. The madness! When the public finds out about these newsletters, Obama's toast.

As Wright pointed out, put Jesus's "I've not come to bring peace but a sword" in heavy rotation on the Fox newt network, and you'd have people rejecting Jesus. Pointing out the normal pastoral aspects of Wright's ministry is just Hewitt's mea culpa for the noise machine he normally leads.

Or maybe not. Maybe Hewitt's just nuts.

Nah, you have the wrong talking point on that. You see, that's an example of his elitism! He's part of an elitist church, what with all their fancy-pants college diplomas and robes and tassels and whatnot. College! And not just any college, a Liberal East-Coast College! (DC counts as East Coast, doesn't it?)

Hey, if the GOP thinks their winning entry for this election is Obama's preacher, let's not discourage them.

Those letters are like eucharist for HH's readers - it's turned their vitriol into complete bemusement.

Well, at least it wasn't a rickroll.

I think the "gotcha" moment was supposed to be his rant about how King Tut was black.

How am I supposed to know whether the condemn Obama for Wright's elitism in shaming of non-college graduates when it is unknown whether he attended services that day?

Does anyone actually take what Hewitt says seriously? The guy is beyond ridiculous and the dictionary definition of partisan hack.

I think the reason why we're supposed to be upset with Obama's pastor is that he dares to point out that Egypt was in Africa. Next thing ya know, he'll be pointing out that civilization began in the Middle East and that Jesus was a rabble-rouser who was put to death by the most powerful nation in the world for being a terrorist who claimed a position of king (caliph, if you will) of a radical sect within a certain Middle Eastern religious group.

I imagine Patterson hopes to sow division by printing the pretty forceful condemnation of black televangelists in the "prosperity gospel" tradition.

...OK? It would probably be a much more helpful propaganda technique if one were to highlight the portions of the text that we are supposed to become indignant over. Or, y'know, find a text that is actually in any way offensive.

While I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be outraged at Obama about, I will say that the fact that Egypt is in Africa does not mean that ancient Egyptians were Black. Egyptians today aren't Black, and, as I understand it, there's been considerable intermixing with sub-Saharan Africans (mostly slaves), over the several millennia which separate us from Tutankhamun. There's no particular reason to think that he was Black (although he wouldn't have been "white," really, either).

Shouldn't that inbred cracker Sailer be showing up right about now?

A large part of the problem is that so many of these right-wing hacks are doing it for pay -- being outrageous because they figured it was a good ticket to stardom. As the ensuing Republican trainwreck of the 2006-08 realignment of American politics gathers pace, the gravy train for these people will dry up, and the smart ones will moderate politically and the stupid ones will look ever more ridiculous, yelling very loudly all the time from the network TV and think-tank position of comfort that they fail to understand is no longer a position of power, like that wonderful piece of US Army folklore, the Woofus Bird, running around at ever increasing speeds in ever decreasing circles until it disappears up its own ass.

You mean that TUCC is the activist, conservative (small c), church full of 'Strivers' that some of us said it was? That a lot of its work is how the Black community can help itself without going begging to someone else, i.e., self-sufficiency? That they do support strong families, education, and doing positive in the world? That it's not a cult full of 'radicals'.

That it is indeed full of the folks most connected to ' The System' within the Black community, but also have a social conscience?

Well...well...well...

Well, remember that the confused Mr Hewitt kept writing things like "Romney's strategy for victory continues to roll out" and "Romney rising" even after Mitt got smoked in one primary after another.

I'll post the same thing I posted on Hugh's site:

Don't you think many of the bulletins that Duane has posted contain plenty of evidence that Wright is using church resources and the church itself as a means by which to make political statements, endorsements, and suggestions? That's a pretty clear violoation of the law that allows TUCC to operate under tax-exempt status...

I'm with you that the posts with little to no commentary started to get old a few posts ago, but are you really trying to suggest that there's nothing problematic with these bulletins (besides the questionable theology)? Does it HAVE to be spelled out for you?

You guys don't understand racism. Hewett's folks just don't like black people, and anything that reminds them of African-American culture is bad in and of itself.

Kenyan costumes! Big shiney cars! Rap music! Menthol cigarettes! The horror! The horror!

I think Hugh's just upset that TUCC is training fifth-columnists for Osama Hussein X's presidency by encouraging them to go to college and then TALK JUST LIKE REGULAR WHITE FOLKS! I mean, c'mon, it's obvious -- this newsletter isn't printed in Ebonics! That MUST mean SOMETHING!

Here's what they're doing...they're throwing it against the wall to see what sticks. They're hoping one of their kern-eyed Rathergate vets sees something they can run with. They're looking for the terrorist fist bump in the church bulletins. They've outsourced slime collection.

Actually, some Egyptians are black.

Anwar Sadat, for one was.

Tell you one thing, any random Egyptian pharaoh probably looked a hell of a lot more like Barack Obama than Hugh Hewitt.
