I haven't actually attended very much of the DLC's National Conversation (seemed more fun to go out and see Chicago) but I did catch most of Markos, the Great Orange Satan himself, on a panel with various other worthies. Not much of interest was said, really, but at one point he did call Joe Lieberman "an asshole" and received applause from many and no boos or dissent from anyone else.

... (seemed more fun to go out and see Chicago)...

Good call.

Applause.

Why was he invited to speak to that group? And why did he accept? I thought he hated the DLC with a passion. Isn't there a younger group that he likes more?

I'm getting my Democratic cliques all mixed up...

What was said about Iran - not that I can't guess...

Meanwhile, read Sy Hersh's latest on Bush and Cheney's efforts to start a war with Iran:

Note: The Democrats signed off on this.

Agent: It's worse than you know.
Malcolm: It usually is.

Anyone can call anyone an asshole. But not anyone, like Markos, can make good money doing it. And that orange-it may be great for branding but visually it is a very poor choice for a website. McDonalds uses orange in their restaurants knowing that the unpleasant color deters customers from lingering.

I don't visit the site. There are too many good blogs around for me to tolerate being greeted by an harangue for money by some self-styled, self-promoting political expert. Here's the first four paragraphs that greet visitors to the dailykos blog:

"If you use ad blocking software while viewing Daily Kos, you're getting all the benefits of our site but we're not getting any of the advertisement revenue associated with your visits. This site relies on ad revenue for daily operations: a decrease in the number of ads seen means a decrease in the funding available to run the site, to pay those that work on it, and to create improved site features.

We won't stop you from using ad blocking software, but if you do use it we ask you to support Daily Kos another way: by purchasing a site subscription. A subscription is an inexpensive way to support the site that eliminates the advertisements without using ad blocking software.

Revenue generated from the subscriptions goes to the Daily Kos fellowship program, providing a steady income for bloggers Markos and allowing them to concentrate full time on expanding the reach and influence of the netroots through a variety of projects.

By using ad blocking software, you may be hiding the site ads but you're also reducing the site's primary source of revenue. So if you must use one, please do your part to support the site and the people that bring it to you by purchasing a site subscription today."

Fuck off, Joe. No one cares what you think.

skiddie:
It goes back to last summer when Markos and Harold Ford, Jr., were on MTP together(of which Russert was off that weekend, go figure). They promised each other to attend the others convention(so I imagine Harold will be in Austin next month).

Joe Librull,

You only get that message when you're are using ad blocking software, disabling the ads that keeps the site afloat.

Sure, You could turn off your ad blocking software for that specific site if you don't like that message, but I understand that you're the kind of person that is terrible insulted by a friendly, non binding request that you in some way contribute to the bandwidth and content costs, that you use. Because it's clear that actually simply looking at ads is beneath your dignity and that they should be glad in fact that you're not demanding to be payed wages and compensation for the time you spent on that site. but luckily for the rest of the world, not everybody is such a freeloading #@$^ as you.

Joe Librul --

You're doing it wrong. If you use Firefox's adblock plus, it's pretty straightforward to make a little filter to kill Markos' adblock bitchbox. In fact, I think if you add the filter #blockquote(adblocker), that gets it.

Also, lol @ Ernst.

Did you enjoy getting fleeced for a few bite sized samples at the Taste, or go out and do some more constructive tourism?

Just to be clear Mr. Y: if Mick Krazeny or Jeff Calaban call you know who sent them.

I wonder why no one commented on my comment about the visually unpleasant orange color used on Kos. For me that is a greater reason to avoid the site than ads that I automatically tune out anyway.

John Emerson, isn't tomorrow a school day? Why are you up after 9pm?

Ernst, do you contribute money to every blog and news-site that you visit? Do you click on the ads? Or are you "the kind of person that is terrible insulted by a friendly, non binding request that you in some way contribute to the bandwidth and content costs, that you use."

Oh yeah,John and Ernst,as Markos might say: you guys are assholes!

It definitely is a pain in the ass to look at. And it may just be because I'm under 50 years old, but I have yet to ever laugh while reading a DailyKos thread, despite its users' best efforts at humor.

I wonder why no one commented on my comment about the visually unpleasant orange color used on Kos. For me that is a greater reason to avoid the site than ads that I automatically tune out anyway.

Because everybody needs good branding. Color's a great way to do that, and Blue/Red/Green are all overused politically. Purple has additional connotations, and yellow is too soft.

Orange is uncomfortable to be surrounded by, but there's a world of difference between the color on the walls and the color on a webpage masthead. I think it's distinctive, and smart design.

And I agree with John, Ernst, and vg: Get over yourself, or get a clue and fix your adblock. Maybe both.

Markos' plea makes sense: Indy media costs money to run, and if you like the site you should let him rack up the ad revenue. He's not asking for click-thrus, just to have your page views count. If it doesn't turn into spyware, all you have to close a window. WTF cares?

It brings a little tear to my eye to see people extolling the virtue of advertising and the vice of freeloading.

Excuse me, it's just sidebar ads. Wow. Even less obtrusive. This is how bloggers eat, dude. Sorry to despoil your precious virgin eyes.

It brings a little tear to my eye to see people extolling the virtue of advertising and the vice of freeloading.

I extol the virtue of freeloading like two threads below, dumbass. But people gotta eat to live. Just because I'm a leftist doesn't mean I think capitalism doesn't exist.

"(A)t one point he did call Joe Lieberman "an asshole" and received applause from many and no boos or dissent from anyone else."

Well, that's just wrong. Joe Lieberman is actually a "fucking asshole" and should be named as such whenever possible. Kos should issue a correction.

I wonder why no one commented on my comment about the visually unpleasant orange color used on Kos.

Because no one cares much about the color scheme of political blogs? This doesn't seem complicated.

Just as a data point, I'm a middle-aged liberal guy who has never voted for a Republican. I visit Matt Y., Atrios, TPM, Ezra Klein, Obsidian Wings, etc., all the time, but, after a few attempts, never Daily Kos. I've always found it boring and off-putting, in a way that I won't bother going on about here, unless someone wants me to. It's a boring fucking site, if you ask me (which, I realize, no one did).

I just looked at the site for the first time in years, and while the commentary is as uninspired as I remember, neither the color scheme nor the adds are an issue for me. In fact I kind of like the orange. I was expecting the whole background to be orange or something, but it's just the bannor and links.

Bad calculus Mr Moulitsas. This is politics, and this is Washington, DC. One day you'll need Joe's vote on something which is not foreign policy related, and your case will be weakened by all this name calling.
Am I the only one who watched The West Wing and learned a couple things that pro political buzzmasters seem to not know?

What live said. (No one asked me either.) I'll just add that if I were to create a fake website parodying liberal sanctimony, it would be indistinguishable from the real DailyKos.

I don't mind the color scheme at Kos at all, but the front-page content is almost uniformly boring, and half the comments I make are misunderstood (jokes, in particular, are routinely taken seriously); the smarter active users there tend to post rather than comment, so discussions tend towards the mundane or just inane.

It's too bad, because the commenting system there is way better than that at any similarly popular site and would be a great way to foster discussion (being able to simply rate/track/get responses to recent comments) if the active users were generally a little more interesting.

Conversely, a bunch of thick, devoted users makes it easy to rally around some grassroots effort to write letters/raise money/etc, which is why Kos excels at that.

Actually, orange is quite a popular color right now. It's bright. Cheerful, really.

Shut the fuck up, Joe. You have no frame of reference her. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie.

Why would someone hate orange? I love orange!

Joe Lieberman, on the other hand, deserves every bit of hatred and animosity directed at him. After all, he's responsible for getting a lot of people killed -- for a lie.

Dailykos rocks. The only reason I had for going to the site was because so many chickenhawk rightwing sleazebags demonized it over and over, and that made me curious. Now I have it on my favorites.

But Liebermann is an *sshole, so what is the controversy?

BTW, but asshole I mean someone who has left the Democratic Party and is endorsing John McCain.

If that is not an *sshole, what is?

"I wonder why no one commented on my comment about the visually unpleasant orange color used on Kos."

Because no one would care about that even if the person mentioning weren't an idiot whose views are utterly ignorable.

I can take or leave most of DailyKos -- except the horse race stuff, which in contrast to their policy discussions, is almost always informative -- but how can anyone find Atrios preferable? Unless you enjoy feeling smuggly superior to the same things Duncan Black feels smuggly superior to -- but you can get that from Brad DeLong, and DeLong has a lot of content and real discussion to go with it.

Has anyone ever read all the way through an Atrios comment thread?

"Bad calculus Mr Moulitsas. This is politics, and this is Washington, DC. One day you'll need Joe's vote on something which is not foreign policy related, and your case will be weakened by all this name calling."

All the smart people applauded, moron. No one will need LIEberman's vote because the Dems will have a significant majority and he will be kicked out of the caucus.

DK, as with many lib/left blogs, is endowed with fine writing & analysis and has a more diverse political spectrum than I had imagined. And I love it when they speak dirty to power.

To all the people that have complaints about DailyKos: here's an idea, don't go there! If you don't like it, go somehwere you do like and stop wasting your time and ours by bitching about it.

And to bad calculus, watching West Wing does not make you politically savvy as evidenced by your failure to understand the political dynamics regarding Joe Lieberman, whose already-diminished relevance will be completely eliminated after the November elections.

The whole calculus thing is why the Democratic party has been so ineffective for so long, and why the DLC sucks. Sure, you work with the other side sometimes, but you always call their bullshit, and what's coming out of Joe's mouth right now is one unending log of bovine excrement. It's different by degree and fundamentally from putting up with, say, some social conservatism from a guy like Baucus, who's a conservative Democrat from a red state, as opposed to Lieberman, who's a neocon from a solid blue state (whose primary voters rejected him, BTW). He may help out on a few social issue votes, but he'd do that anyway, so why stroke him? His foreign policy ideas are so repugnant, he needs to be publicly repudiated in the strongest terms possible, and if he joins the minority party as a result, so what?

Here's the new calculus: He was just barely a useful idiot at 51-49, but with the White House in our hands and a ~56-44 Senate, screw him. As for the filibuster, the leadership should announce that any filibuster from now on must be an actual one, with late night speeches and all, not just an announced intent to do so.

If the worst criticism someone can come up with against Kos is to pule about his color scheme (interior design much?) or that he *gasp* tries to support his site's expenses with ads... wow, that's some limp stuff.

LIEberman is a @sshole, so I fail to see the controversy. IMO, he weakend Gores ticket considerably. Who knows? Maybe LIEberman was even working the other side then, too- we now know Carville sure was.

All you superior blog readers out there have managed to create a comment thread of little substance. There seems to be virtually no discussion here about the DLC's Lieberman-Asshole applause, which was the substance of Matt Y.'s post.

Get over yourselves.

Two comments by John Emerson:

"Fuck off, Joe. No one cares what you think."

"Shut the fuck up, Joe. You have no frame of reference her. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie"

My comments: If you read the context of my criticism of the use of orange on Kos, it is two fold. 1) It is unpleasant to look at. 2) It is a color that will not encourage viewers to linger. Branding, is in essence, telling a story. The use of a color does little to brand a site.

BTW: Kos is not in my daily list of Blogs to read.

Joe, my comments may not be brilliant but they are smarter than your comments are.

Joe, my comments may not be brilliant but they are smarter than your comments are. Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah!

Reading what passes for political discourse on the left is fascinating. This site is like a trip to the monkey house.

And I love Kos. Sure he is a con man and he is almost completely ineffective as a political operator, but he gets you moonbats to line up and give him your money (probably from your trust funds or welfare checks). Like most patriotic Americans, I am happy to watch you throw your money down the black hole that is Daily Kos as opposed to giving it to a competent PAC who might actually make some use of it.

Anyway, thanks for the hearty laughs at all of your expenses.

Stay classy, Democrats!

Bob Hope-I assume you mean a competent PAC that will use the money to eelct McCain and continue the years of law abiding ethical government, and peace, and prosperity that Bush has bequeathed on the nation.

I hear a certain stall at a Minnesota Airport men's room is now a Republican shrine; and that Vitter's favorite prostitute has doubled her hourly rate.

Bob Hope is straight outta Sadly, No! He's like the second coming of Gary Ruppert.

Joe, you make my point for me. The best part is you are too stupid to realize it and will continue with your demented ranting until every moderate voter that crosses your path goes running into the arms of John McCain.

By the way, Barney Frank and the male prostitution ring run out of his condo and child raping Garry Studds say "Hiya Sailor!"

Now please, go back to tossing poo and bowing to the "brilliance" that is Kos. And to think, during our school days I thought Matty Y was just an intellectually dishonest poseur. Who knew he would provide so much unintentional amusement for his more successful classmates.

I was going to post something about the seemingly retarded Mr. Librull, but that seems pretty well covered.

Instead, I will say f**k off to 'Al.' Let me know when the GOP does anything classy, you bitch.

And Home Depot uses it because that was the cheapest color to get. Seems to work for them.

"That asshole Joe Lieberman" its amazing how much it just rolls off the tongue.
