I'm happy to learn that Ta-Nehisi Coates will be joining the Atlantic blog team in the near future -- he's an absolutely great choice.

A surprisingly good choice. I'm glad to see there'll still be an Atlantic blog worth reading even when Fallows is off fondling his Kindle.
Iam sure he will be good addition to the many handsome Atlantic bloggers.
Love the choice. Ta-Nehisi really thinks through every post, it seems, and isn't afraid to admit when he's off. He also really forces you to think about your own previously held notions. Trite, but true.
Yeah!
BTW: I called it first.
Yummmmmm!
Oh, and his commentary is brilliant too. ;)
Does he have to move to DC?
I was hoping for hilzoy, personally.
yihaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
yihaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shine nominated him, but I seconded it. He is the obvious choice and much deserving. Congrats Ta-Nehisi!
Yeah!!!
Excellent choice!
That's great news, although I was pulling for Hilzoy.
I hope his first post is about the pernicious influence Steve Sailer has on this site. I'm guessing Sailer's trying to get "dirt" on Coates right now.
Big congrats to Ta-Nehisi. He had some excellent posts when he was in this space.
I'm a big Hilzoy fan -- I think she has the highest insight-to-post ratio out there. But she might not have wanted to leave her day job. It's a very good day job :)
I figured it would be Kirchick (though I'm sure he's lurking in the wings).
it's about time the atlantic got a little bit of diversity in its lineup.
the perspective of a person of color will be greatly welcome.
i don't really know anything about coates, but i hope he is not one of these clarence page-like "nice negroes" who ends up saying things that he hopes his white masters will approve of.
i hope the brother has some cojones and will tell it like it is.
otherwise, why have a person of color on the staff?
you may as well put a person in blackface up there.
i'll certainly miss matt in these pages -he's definitely alright for a kinda cheesy, or should i say, cheetosy, white guy - but i'm sure i'll find him wherever his stuff gets out in print.
last hope: i wanna see matt bitch-slap poor little jamie kirchick again!!! that made my day!!! in a sort of sadistic way, cause it was kinda like watching guys with clubs beat up on seal pups. but hey, i'll admit getting a bit of pleasure out of that. so sue me...
Excellent. I agree with Neil on hilzoy, but this is likely to be an improvement.
Best of luck to Matt as he sails off into the Vanguard of the Proletariat sunset.
It's amusing to draw the analogy between Ta vs. Hilzoy and Barack vs. Hillary -- except the analogy quickly breaks down because as Neil points out Hilzoy probably wouldn't have even been interested in the job.
Actually, Ta-Nehisi Coates, seemed like such an obvious and excellent choice, that I was sure the Atlantic would not pick him. Congratulations to the Atlantic for doing the right thing! Congratulations to Ta-Nehisi on the great new gig!
And congratulations to Matt for not letting any moss grow on his blog!
Wonderful! A perfect choice.
coates is smart, honest, and open-minded; i'm pleasantly surprised by this choice.
OK, Ta-Nehisi.
Matt's blog readers got what we wanted.
The Atlantic Editorial staff got what they wanted.
You got what you wanted.
Now don't fuck it up.
Much love.
The Fans.

Why not both? Considering how little Fallows posts, she could have kept her day job with infrequent posting here. If the Atlantic decided to wimp out and hire a conservative along with hilzoy, they could have hired a smart conservative blogger like Drezner.
Then again, hilzoy would probably have to start using her own name, but considering how smart, informative and honest her posts are, this would likely only enhance her reputation. It's not like one of America's oldest magazines doesn't have the money. They could always fire Robert Kaplan and Hitchens, whose contributions only add to showing how weird they are.
Excellent, excellent choice. Can't wait.
