Shipping Down to Austin

16 Jul 2008 10:20 am

I'm in National Airport getting ready to fly to Austin for Netroots Nation. If you'll be there, please check out my panel and ignore that other panel at the same time with losers like Krugman, Perlstein, Digby, and Atrios.

On a related note, I have a new candidate for "worst bagel ever" -- Jerry's NY Pizza and Subs in National's Terminal A.

Dude, Jerry's a major chain. And yes, they are easily the worst chain restaurant I have ever been to... the pizza is greased cardboard, the subs are soggy, the "cheesesteak" is an unspeakable abomination.

I can't even imagine how bad their bagels are.

Oooh, oooh, Jerry's!

You can make up for your experience at Jerry's by going to Sam's BBQ on 12th and Chicon. It's not the safest neighborhood, but the BBQ is great and they're open well past bar closing time. And look for the picture of the owner posing with Bill and Hillary. You can also get barbecued mutton there (better than you think).

Barbecued mutton on the east side is truly a revelation. I say this as a someone who's been vegetarian for 8+ years now, but memory lingers...

Also, $375 is definitely going to keep me from the festivities, but are you going to be doing any book promoting events outside of the conference?

Urban planners often talk about the concept of "food deserts." Anacostia is usually bandied about as one good example in the DC area. I propose that Terminal A be added to the list.

Kudos for calling the airport "National" and not using That Other Name Favored By Republicans With A Severe Hero-Worshipping Complex.

America thanks you.

National's Terminal A is the red-headed step-child of DC Metro airports. It doesn't even have real airlines - what the hell is AirTran or Sprint? I would never expect to find actual food there.

Well, since you are coming to Austin, you should try a bagel here. If we're going to have the worst bagels in the world we may as well get some credit for it.

Best bagels in Austin: Einstein's bagels.

Sick. Mr. Y, it's going to be incredibly hot, so I recommend Margaritas at any of the famous haunts (pulvo's has pitchers)and for dancing afterward: Beauty Bar for all the cute scene-ster types. You should definitely take in the frat/hooligan crowd on 6th street Friday night. A sight to see.

If you want to go classy: Martini's in the Driskoll hotel.

Cool coffeehouse: Spidehouse by the university.

There's my travel guide... Enjoy.

I feel very strongly that you should visit Katz's Deli while in Austin.

Terminal A has one this going for it (amongst NoVa airports). Really quick security. Its a little run down looking, and quite a walk from the metro(but still less than anything at Dulles).

Just have a morning Sam Adams. Thats the best policy.

Well, what are the odds that one place could have NY Pizza, NY Subs, AND NY bagels? They flew too close to the sun.

Matthew: It is not National Airport. The name is Ronald Reagan National. Shame on you. And the name explains why the bagels are awful.

Central Texas in JULY is just madness. Best take your anti-depressives in double doses. [Come to think of it, Texas anytime is not what one thinks of a civilized place to visit, although Austin seems to have an exemption.)

My rule: Unless you have to, never eat food not cooked in the building where it is sold. Which rules out 99% of anything found in any airport.

I imagine that the bagels in Terminal A were made in Kwangdong Province and came to the US in a shipping container.

Screw you!

The airport on the Virginia side of the Potomac has three appropriate names:
1)"National"
2)"Washington National"
3)"DCA"

So it has always been, so it shall always be.

For suburban DC natives like me, a Jerry's meatball sub is a profound comfort food. Ordering a bagel at a sub shop was your mistake here.

The will be an Einstein's bagel in terminal A soon (if it's not already open).

Ah yes -- the problem of the shitty bagel. In my experience, no one outside of New York or New Jersey has ever learned how to make a proper bagel. Six years after leaving NYC, I still dream of Ess-a-Bagel.

The bagels at A may be awful, but the Legal Seafood just outside of C more than makes up for it.
