Straight Talk

24 Jul 2008 04:01 pm

After goading Barack Obama into taking a trip abroad, John McCain's spent all day mocking Obama for being abroad and in the course of it he's gotten into an awful lot of nonsense:

"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain told O'Donnell. "But that's a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make."

However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada -- to the Economic Club of Canada -- in which he applauded NAFTA's successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain's trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign.

Meanwhile, the right is now slamming Obama for trying to get Europeans more engaged in the fight against al-Qaeda. In a world where The Washington Post things fighting al-Qaeda is less important than backstopping western oil companies in Iraq I suppose that's not so surprising.

On the plus side, the speech was good, I have the t-shirt to prove my attendance, and Obama's high-class flimflam goes well with Bratwurst.

On the substance you are right, but do you really think that foreign policy liberalism is going to work with voters? Doesn't Obama have to make some play for nationalist sentiment if he wants to win? This year is stacked in Obama's favor but this citizen of thw world stuff seems like bad politics to me.

To be fair, McCain probably thought Toronto was somewhere in Ohio.

Correction: McCain probably thought Toronto was somewhere in the Ohio Territory.

He also forgot that he visited Colombia earlier this month

He seems to be forgetting an awful lot lately

I think this was a good time to do the speech. The election is 3 months aways, so he'll have plenty of time to work on domestic issues. However, when international issues come up, he'll have this trip and this speech to point to as example of international exposure/gravitas.

Columbia ... isn't that where Ohio State is located?

For a Republican, you haven't visited Germany properly unless you've honored the graves of Nazi stormtroopers and groped the Prime Minister.

Damn right. Because that is only way anyone would show up. Politics aside McCain is one of the worst public speaker in history. At least Dubya was entertaining. McCain could be talking about all the steamy sex he's had over the years and people would fall asleep.

Sorry for the multiple posts, my computer was getting an error when I was posting, and apparently it posted my comment 3 times.

Today Obama gave a speech in front of 200,000 in Berlin.

Yesterday, John McCain gave a press conference in the cheese aisle of the supermarket.

'nuff said.

He needs that surge.

And had lunch at a German restaurant in German Village, Ohio.

Shorter McCain: That uppity n----- thinks he's already president!

Barack's speech is such a different message and vision than the one we have had for the last 8 years built on greed, fear, war and rumors of war. It is the complete opposite. It was a message for the 21st Century and for the survival of the Planet -- of Earth. A world where we celebrate each other based on the fact that we are all on this planet together. And that as a species of planet earth, we will not survivie if we continue to war with each other, especially with the atomic and nuclear weapons available to us today!

Barack's message and vision (for without a vision, a man/nation/world perishes) is based on the oneness of Humanity and our shared and common goals -- that we are, all of earth's people, in this together and that we live in a Global Society. And, it was based on the dynamic and healing energy of love and goodwill toward each other; that we are not alone and without hope for a better world in this country and around the world. And, it was based on the premise that there should be a freedom from fear and want everywhere in the world and that only united and an understanding of one another can we build a better world for all.

What a great vision for us as a people to aspire too, especially for the young teenagers and adults and the children around the world -- It Gives them something to look forward to other than endless years of war and hate based on geological differences, color or religious affiliation -- because no matter what the outward differences of color, inwardly, the blood of each of us is all One Color, red!

The large crowd in Germany and the other large crowds that Barack generates signifies to the fact that people hunger for truth and for a message of hope and inspiration, for inspirational leaders! Again Barack shows that he is indeed inspirational, a great healer/teacher/leader! Is it not great that we are talking about peace and unity for a change? Our common humanity? That speaks a lot in itself.

It is unintelligent to think that we are not interdependent and that what goes on in one part of the world, effects us All! Barack generated a lot of powerful and healing energy throughout the world. We must not loose it because critics say he is not yet President. However, as a man of God, he is a servant of the world, and because he loves America and Peace, these things had to be said to stimulate the vision that we can have peace here, right here on earth!

Heh. Well of course, the guyz and galz at the NRO Corner are going to slam Sen. Obama: they're right-wingers, it's what wingers do! Barack Obama could publicly walk on water then turn it into wine with a snap of his fingers, and I'm sure some Cornerite would post a graf or two snarking that he only did it to prove he wasn't a Muslim!

Walking on water? Changing water into wine? Typical crowd pleasing bromides that evade hard issues! (Shorter David Brooks.)

I have nothing but contempt for people who post comments on blogs. Don't those people have friends?
