Oh, that Jessica's caught the patriarchy redhanded again! You go, person!
For more of this type of sexism from the 60's, especially in the advertising field, I have to recommend "Mad Men" which is currently free on AMC on Demand. Great Show that I don't think too many people are watching.
In reality, today's women (or the 1960s' women of the future) clean somewhat less, but are more promiscuous than women of former eras. On balance, I would say this has been a positive development.

I think more sex and less cleaning benefits everyone.
1968? I'll bet you a zillion bucks some conservative composed that ad to demoralize or annoy the feminist movement. If it was the late '50s, maybe not, but in 1968 how could someone who writes ads for a professional ad agency not be aware of the feminist movement and new feminist ideas and not see how people would take it? At that time, this is oblivious as making an ad that says "The blacks of the future will ride in the back seats of our spaceships."
I don't think so, Swan. 1968 was closer to the beginning of those cultural changes than the end of them. The Civil Rights movement was a '50s and early '60s thing, but feminism didn't go mainstream until well into the '70s. And people who wrote ad copy weren't exactly pitching their messages to grad students. The ads were for housewives. I think the ad's funny in a kitschy way. Which I guess is what Jessica Valenti is saying, too, though I don't know if the word "patriarchy" in her headline means she's actually upset about it.
This actually shows how far our society has moved compared to expectations. It was assumed in 68 that women would play their traditional roles forever, but they were wrong. We've improved as people, liberalizing our beliefs, far more than we've progressed technologically. Sometimes we forget that.
The women of the future have impressive eyes and incredible complexions as well, if this ad is to be believed.
Well, in the 1960's they didn't have PhotoShop, so face models had to actually look good in reality. Today, you could make Bella Abzug look good. Today, the men's mags replace the entire skin of their models with computer fakery, which is instantly detectable and unbelievable tacky. You can't even trust "red carpet" photos which are PhotoShopped to reduce waist lines, increase bust lines, and totally clear off the slightest facial imperfection. If you can't see Angelina Jolie's mole on her forehead, it's definitely been PhotoShopped heavily. Megan Fox has serious acne scarring but you'd never know it without some candid shots making it onto the Net.
While I agree with other commenters that the Cleaning Housewife of the Future is, in fact, a total fox, it is not the case that there was no photo touchup done in the pre-Photoshop era. They just did the touchup by hand on the actual photo, rather than on a computer.

All this ad needs is having her exercising on a perpetual motion machine to complete the trifecta.
