The Party of Helms

06 Jul 2008 10:44 am

Fred Barnes knows just how to revive John McCain's listless presidential campaign -- gay-bashing his way to victory by more strongly emphasizing his desire to frustrate the goals of gay and lesbian Americans who want to serve their country in uniform or get married to people they love. There's perhaps no better time to recall that McCain guru/lobbyist Charlie Black used to be a Jesse Helms guy and liked his race-baiting campaign tactics.

As Ed Kilgore observed reviewing a book on Helms:

Helms was undoubtedly the living connection between the racial politics of the Old South and the religion-based cultural politics of the New Right. He was the one surviving segregationist of stature who never regretted or retracted his opposition to the major civil rights legislation of the 1960s. His career-long opposition to any national gesture commemorating the civil rights movement (most notably, his interminable and often scurrilous rearguard efforts to taint the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.) made his strident rhetoric against voting rights enforcement and anything approaching affirmative action an afterthought. And Helms's two reelection campaigns (in 1990 and 1996) against African American Democrat Harvey Gantt pivoted on explicit race baiting, as Helms's Congressional Club allies later admitted to Link.

Helms practically invented the modern conservative politics of sexuality, along with the electoral mobilization of white conservative evangelicals, starting back in the 1970s. In 1977, he seized on Anita Bryant's successful campaign to overturn a gay rights ordinance in Miami and began building a national backlash against antidiscrimination laws. As early as 1979, he was making speeches about the terrible threat of "secular humanism" to Christianity, making the wonky Aspen Institute of Humanistic Studies an unlikely villain. When the AIDS epidemic emerged in the 1980s, Helms began an extended and violently worded campaign to "protect" Americans from the "perverts" whose "disgusting" habits were responsible for AIDS, while attacking efforts to find effective treatments. Most memorably, Helms single-handedly made the National Endowment of the Arts' subsidies for "obscene" and "homosexual" artwork a culture-war staple for nearly two decades.

And there we go. Fortunately, public support for gay and lesbian equality continues to strengthen over time, so these kind of tactics should have a limited shelf life.

Why did the Republican leadership let this clown chair the Foreign Relations Committee?

This is another example of actual conservatism being far more evil than theoretical conservatism.

The late senator deserves a fitting memorial. See http://notionscapital.wordpress.com/2008/07/05/jesse-helms/

It's a better world with Helms dead. If they just tossed his body in the town dump maggots and rats would leave it alone out of professional courtesy.

I don' think it'll come down to gay-bashing. I have faith in John McCain's dignity and integrity that he won't ... oh ... heh ... heh heh ... ha ha ... BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry, thought I could get that one out and keep a straight face.

Even as we speak, "Piss" Helms is being horribly ass-raped in the seventh circle of Hell for the evil he has caused.

"Most memorably, Helms single-handedly made the National Endowment of the Arts' subsidies for "obscene" and "homosexual" artwork a culture-war staple for nearly two decades."

Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were both gay. What a shame that they were patronized...

How convenient for you to ignore all the damage Dems did to civil rights, when Republicans were fighting for them.
There were other civil rights acts passed before 1964, you know or will know now. In 1875, public housing was granted without discrimination, by the Republicans. In 1957, the right to vote was granted, by the Republicans.

In 1963, when Kennedy introduced the civil rights act to prohibit segregation in public places, the Democrats tried to bury that in committee, then tried to filibuster, but the Republicans won out, it was passed Republicans 80% in congress to Democrats 61%. The ONLY opposition was from Democrats.

Civil Rights for blacks have always been fought for BY REPUBLICANS, and fought against by Democrats.

You can argue that you don't think so, but these are facts.

mallenv pulls the same tired old Repiglican trick out of his ass: "There were other civil rights acts passed before 1964, you know or will know now. In 1875, public housing was granted without discrimination, by the Republicans. In 1957, the right to vote was granted, by the Republicans.

They're completely irrelevant and if you had an honest bone in your body you'd admit it. The Dixiecrats left the Democratic Party and became Repiglicans after 1964. Ever since the GOP has been the refuge of dimwitted racists and fools like you.

Go fuck yourself.

"Civil Rights for blacks have always been fought for BY REPUBLICANS, and fought against by Democrats."

No, and your post doesn't even document that statement.

Yes, Lincoln was a Republican, and Southern Democrats (not all Democrats) stood for racial segregation into the '60s. When Johnson signed the civil rights legislation of '64 and '65, he knew he had just signed away the Southern Democrats to the Republican party. Nixon welcomed them with open arms, and Republicans since them have been the heirs and apologists for this legacy. Helms and Thurmond are only two of the more overt and familiar examples. You can argue that you don't think so, but these are facts.

"They're completely irrelevant and if you had an honest bone in your body you'd admit it. The Dixiecrats left the Democratic Party and became Repiglicans after 1964. Ever since the GOP has been the refuge of dimwitted racists and fools like you."

NOT irrelevant, except for people like you. History speaks. The Dixiecrats would not have left the party if they were pissed that blacks were granted civil rights, since Republicans were voting for them. Something else caused them to abandon the mother ship.

If you had a point that was fact, you wouldn't resort to obscenities, but that is all you are left with? Facts, deal with it.

After some thirty odd posts on Helms, Matt has decided to change the name of this blog to "The Jesse Helms Show".

Joel speaks some truth in a positive way. I agree with him for the most part. I don't think Republicans should have to apologize for ex-Democrats for their past actions, which we never condoned.

Off the subject. How about slavery? Why is America singled out as the bad guy? The vast majority of African slaves were sold by their own chiefs, to the Muslims, then transported to other countries by the Europeans. Only about 10% came to the US. In 1808, imports of slaves were prohibited. In 1865 slavery was abolished. America declared independence in 1776, but the constitution was passed in 1787. So for only 21 years it was legal to import slaves, and in less than 80 years it was abolished, less time than any other country. You know the native Americans enslaved each other? That they fought each other? That they helped wipe each other out? Mostly before America became the US?

"Civil Rights for blacks have always been fought for BY REPUBLICANS, and fought against by Democrats."

"No, and your post doesn't even document that statement."

Sorry, it does document it. ??? The post is all documentation. Can you deny any of the facts? Or just come up with an excuse like the apt named moelarryandjesus, quite a person to put in with.

"Even as we speak, "Piss" Helms is being horribly ass-raped in the seventh circle of Hell for the evil he has caused."

No, he is giving it to the socialists down there and they are loving it. The socialists have caused more problems this century than anyone, including the "evil" conservatives, or any religion. Don't even try to differentiate any flavor of socialism to excuse them, or you.

When the AIDS epidemic emerged in the 1980s, Helms began an extended and violently worded campaign to "protect" Americans from the "perverts" whose "disgusting" habits were responsible for AIDS,

Except that their "disgusting" habits were responsible for the fast spread of AIDS in the US, and indeed their habits led the homosexual community to have unusually large concentrations of lots of STDs.

If Helms had been a liberal who campaigned to protect Americans from smoking, Ed Kilgore, Matt Yglesias, and their ilk would probably have nary a negative word to say.

Today's GOP would smear Lincoln as a commie pinko fag and run him out of the party on a rail. He was a depressive who married a crazy lady - think of the fun Karl Rove would have with all that!

According to Curly --

Pore Jesse’s daid,
Pore old Jesse Helms is daid,
All gather ’round his coffin now and cry
And cry!

He had a heart of brass
And a G-O-P pol’s ass
And that’s why such a feller had to die.

Pore Jesse’s daid
Pore old Jesse Helms is daid,
He’s lookin’ oh so peaceful and serene
And serene!

He’s all laid out to rest
With his hands acrost his chest
His robe and hood have never been so clean!

Pore Jesse’s daid
Pore old Jesse Helms is daid
His racist friends’ll weep for miles around
Miles around!

The daisies in the dell
Will give out a different smell
When Jesse Helms is underneath the ground.

Pore Jesse’s daid
A candle lights his haid
He’s layin’ in a coffin made of wood
Made of wood!

And some folks are feelin’ glad
Cause he used to treat ‘em bad
But now they know old Jesse’s gone for good.

Pore Jesse’s daid
A candle lights his haid!
He’s lookin’ oh so purty and so nice.
Oh so nice!

He looks like he’s asleep,
But we’re glad that he won’t keep
Cause it’s summer and they’re running out of ice.

Pore Jesse’s daid . . .

With apologies to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein

While Helms was certainly one of the country's top racists and homophobes, I wish he were one thing other than dead: irrelevant. But he wasn't and isn't - Satan didn't die with Jesse Helms. He just morphed into violent Christofascists like Rod Parsley. True, Parsley and his kind are morons and many morons are harmless, but MORALIZING morons are extremely dangerous. Parsley, Copeland, Hinn, Dollar and others run the lives of millions of people: they tell them what to think and how to think. Parsley uses militaristic rhetoric that would incite anyone to violence. His youth group is called "Battle Cry" an organization that was too stupid to understand why San Francisco did not want them back (before a "rally" of 20,000 teenagers descended upon SF's baseball park, some of them attempted to "pray away the gay" and other evils in front of City Hall). They were such cretins, they couldn't understand that the one thing SF can't tolerate is intolerance.

Jesse Helms may be dead, but there are way too many people standing in line to take his place.

You shouldn't try to place thoughts in other people's minds, bucko. Like Barack Obama, I am a longtime (if often recovering) nicotine addict. On the other hand, the one positive thing I can say about a McCain presidency is that he's now promising me subsidies to kick the evil habit.

Ed Kilgore

You shouldn't try to place thoughts in other people's minds, bucko. Like Barack Obama, I am a longtime (if often recovering) nicotine addict.

This hardly contradicts what I said. The fact that you smoke does not mean that you advocate smoker's rights or that you consider smoking a good or morally neutral activity. Inherent ou still have a negative attitude toward smoking that I doubt you have toward homosexual sex.

On the other hand, the one positive thing I can say about a McCain presidency is that he's now promising me subsidies to kick the evil habit.

Proves that I was right about your thoughts. You view smoking as an "evil habit" and apparently believe that there should be subsidies to protect people from smoking. (As I said, If Helms had been a liberal who campaigned to protect Americans from smoking, Ed Kilgore, Matt Yglesias, and their ilk would probably have nary a negative word to say - and when McCain campaigns to protect America from smoking, you endorse his position).

Yet, when people point out the health risks associated with anal sex (particularly male homosexual anal sex, which is the only kind where the same person can be the top and the bottom) you decry them as bigots.

You are trying to refute my assumptions about your beliefs, but you have only confirmed them.

Post after post with frothing hate and anger for a dead man.

And these are the so-called the Non-Racist, big hearted and tolerant people!
